THE SNODEN/SNOWDEN FAMILIES OF ENGLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW JERSEY, AND NORTH CAROLINA by Patricia Law Hatcher, t'ASG ' Ocvcral English-born Snowdens arrived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey VJÿin the late seventeenth century. They were from the same area of Not¬ tinghamshire and Derbyshire as the Quaker minister Elizabeth (Snoden) Hooten,1 but the family connections to her have not been identified. ■ JOHN SNOWDEN is listed among the Freeholders and Inhabitants on the open¬ ing page of the separate four-page volume for 1680 for the Burlington [New Jersey] Court, dated 14 June 1680.1 He was the next-to-the-last of the one hun¬ dred and fifty-one men signing the “Concessions and Agreements of the Pro¬ prietors, Freeholders, and Inhabitants of the Province of West New-Jersey, in America,” which is dated 3 March 1676|/7|.< The lengthy document was drawn up in London and signed there by Edward Bylynge, the trustees, and proprie¬ tors, and later in America by the resident proprietors, freeholders, and other inhabitants. It is likely that the New Jersey signatures were not gathered on a single day; some may have been added much later, hence we date his arrival from the documented 1680 date. Ann Snowden was midwife at births 8 3rd month (May) 1681 near Pine Point for a child Samuel and Elizabeth Coles and 10 1st month [March] 1684/5 for a child of John and Frances Antrum and was present 17 1st month [March! 1682/3 for the birth of the first child of John and Ann (Barret) Snowden, recorded at Burlington Monthly Meeting.*’ She was almost surely ANNI; (SMITH) SNOWDEN, wife of proprietor William Snowden, and mother of John Snowden, although her presence in New Jersey has apparently not been previously rec¬ ognized. There is no evidence William came to America, but he may have died en route or shortly after arrival, especially as he shipped goods in 1677 (see¬ page 134). His wife Anne, his son John (above), his son William (below), and probably a daughter Ann (below) did immigrate. This is further supported by ’ ■ Patricia Law Hatcher is editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine \PGM\. The parish of Ollerton adjoins Edwinstow. The parish of Grcasley is some distance away; no likely reason for Ruth’s residence there is known. There were Woodhouse immigrants in New Jersey, but neither Michael nor Ruth has been found among them. 21 There is no baptismal record for Ann in Edwinstow, but she settled in the same Monthly Meeting with John and his mother Anne, and beginning in 1686 Ann (Snoden) Pancoast is recorded as a midwife, as Ann (Smith) Snowden had been (Roach, "Birth Records” [note 51 PGM 27:88, 89). 22 Meldrum, tarty Church Records of Burlington County ( note 6), 1 :66. 21 Meldrum, lutrly Church Records of Burlington County (note 6), 1 :49; 2:8. 24 No record of this marriage has been found, but the date is given in “Jennie Spur¬ way Snowden McKay,” John W.
