GLENTWORTH-WILSON ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS Patricia Law Hatcher, I:\SG" npiic 1772 will of Peter Sonmans1 of the C Tty of Philadelphia PraetitioJL ner of Physick and Surgery mentions “my brother in law George Glentworth” (medical books and equipment), James Glentworth (£200), wife Bethiah Sonmans (residue of personal estate plus real estate in Penn¬ sylvania, and East and West Jersey), after her death half to Peter Sonmans Glentworth, son of “my said brother in law" George Glentworth, residually to his brothers and sisters.- Peter Sonmans married Barthea Wilson, and George Glentworth married Margaret Linton, but no obvious connection between the men or their wives was found. The relationship was peripheral to the Sonmans article, hut genealogists often have far more curiosity than the general population, and for such genealogists (specifically, your editor), the question “how are they related?” was a question not easily set aside/ A Glentworth family sketch in an undocumented, sometimes unreli¬ able, compilation, MacKcnzie’s 1912 Colonial Families, at first seemed to present the answer. Capt. Thomas Glentworth . . . m. at Christ Church, 4th May, 1720 Mary, relict of John Wilson, Esq., |.\7c| and daughter of Capt. Gyles Greene [sic], mariner. I Their children included a son George.)’1 Patricia Law Hatcher, t'ASCi, is editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine \PGM\. I See Aaron Goodwin, "The Arent Sonmans Family: Peter Wright’s 1760 Proof of Pedigree’ in Philadelphia Deeds," PGM 42(2009):101-16, at 1 16. Philadelphia Wills („):280-81 (Fill. #21,727); also [New Jersey] Secretary of State’s Office, Wills and Inventories, [Burlington County original documents! I0193-98C (Fill. #‘545,454). The eminent genealogist Milton Kubincam, I'ASO, took great interest in the Sonmans family because l)r. William W. Glentworth (son of George, son of Peter Sonmans Glentworth, son of the George Glentworth under discussion) married Anne Elizabeth Rubincam, elder daughter and sole heir of his great-great-uncle Joseph Rubineam (Milton Rubineam, "The Strange Career of Peter Sonmans," Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society 57[ 19391:230-51, at 251, note 71), surely another example of such curiosity, although he did not search for or identify the Glentworth-Sonmans con¬ nection. “Sonmans of Rotterdam..." in Lewis D. Cook, “Family Record, Volume 6" (typescript. Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, 1973), 2-3, correctly made the con¬ nection, hut did not compile the Glentworth family. 1 George Norbury MacKcnzie, Colonial I 'aini/ies of the United States of America, 7 volumes (Baltimore: 1912), 4:164-71, at 164-65. John Wilson was not an Esquire, hut a mariner (see below). Green is the surname spelling in contemporary records. - 128 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 46 (2009) 2009 Glentworth-Wilson Additions and Corrections 129 Thus, George Glentworth was the younger half-brother of Bathia Wil¬ son, wife of Peter Sonmans, explaining Peter’s description of George Glentworth as his hrother-in-law. However, MacKenzie's sketch presents serious chronological problems. It states Mary (Greene) (Wilson) Glent¬ worth was the mother of ten children between 1721 and 1747, plus bathia Wilson, born in 171 5, a range of thirty-two years, highly unlikely. Comparison of Mackenzie for the children of Thomas and Mary Glent¬ worth with the records of Christ Church s immediately uncovered many inconsistencies. The revised families are presented below. GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY— WILSON JOHN WII.SON was born say 1689 (estimating marriage at 25) and died between about April 1717 (conception of second child) and 15 July 1717 (probate). John Wilson married 10 October 1714 at Christ Church, Phila¬ delphia, MARY GREEN.6 Mary Wilson, widdow of Philadelphia, married second 4 May 1720 at Christ Church Thomas Glentworth. The will of “John Wilson of Boston in the Province of the Massachu¬ setts Bay in New England marrincr," written 12 October 1714, two days after their marriage, names wife Mary (all his possessions including houses and lands more or less due to him from John Wilson of Boston marrincr, whom he made his executor); witnesses were Bartholomew Garthcw and Gyles Green.7 Children of John and Mary (Green) Wilson: i. BETHIA WILLSON, born in August 1715, baptized 1 or 4s September 1715 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, daughter of (no and Mary Willson, age two weeks; died after 20 June 1779;9 Barthea Wilson married 8 January 1737 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, PETER SONMANS.10 s “Marriage Record of Christ Church, Philadelphia, 1709-1806," Pennsylvania Archives, Second Series, 8(1896):249, 289, 290. Charles R. Hildeburn, Baptisms and Uncials from the Records of Christ Chinch, Philadelphia, 1709-1700 (Baltimore: Genea¬ logical Publishing Company, 1982), baptisms: 42, i i, 107; burials: 155, 157. Additionally, Christ Church has abstracted baptisms and marriages on their website (ehristehurehphila.org), which often contain more information than the published versions. Significant differences are pointed out below. 6 No evidence has been found to prove Mary's father was Gyles Green, but a man of that name witnessed the will of John Wilson; two men of that name were buried at Christ Church, on 6 May 1718 and 15 June 1731; and Giles and Mary Green had a son baptized at Christ Church in 1711. He says “and for my body I rec¬ ommend to the earth or sea to be hurried in a Christianlike and decent manner,” sug¬ gesting he planned to continue his occupation. H Published version gives I September; online version gives 4 September. } On this date a judgment in Middlesex County, New Jersey, was recovered against George Glentworth and Bethsheba Sonmans, administrators of Peter Sonmans, deceased (Richard S. Hutchinson, Middlesex County, Mete Jersey, Deed Abstracts, Hook "I " | Howie, Md.: Heritage Books, 2000 1, 61 ). 10 Published version fives Sonmans: online version gives Sonmans. 130 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 46 ii.
