1 JACOB KOLLOCK OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND LEWES, DELAWARE, AND HIS DESCENDANTS Patricia law Hatcher, FASG, rase c olonial families with mercantile or shipping interests often became widely dispersed geographically. The immigrant Jacob1 Kollock had a significant presence in Pennsylvania and in Delaware (originally the lower three counties of Pennsylvania). Although Jacob signed with his mark,1 the KoIIocks became an educated and prominent family, produc¬ ing doctors, lawyers, merchants, military officers, ministers, planters, printers, public officials, and shippers, who resided from Nova Scotia and Maine to Georgia and the West Indies. Portions of the family have been dealt with in print in 1877,2 1897,' 1938,'* 1947,** 1960/’ 1980,7 and 1999.8 Each publication offered valuable information, some provided by family members; none was comprehen¬ sive; several contained significant errors, omissions, and misassignments; none met modern standards of evidence and documentation. I have writ¬ ten two articles clarifying isolated issues about the family.9 This article presents the family on all lines to the fourth generation. The author is the editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine |PGM\. She is not a Kollock descendant, hut has many connected families. Craig W. He married by say 1688 (child I. born say 1689) MARY LAWERSON. His gravestone, one of the oldest in St. Peter’s Episcopal cemetery in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware, reads “In Memory of Jacob Kollock who departed this life ye 25 day of February Anno Domini 1720 age 63 years." Hers reads “Mary, the late wife of Jacob Kollock, died September 30th, 1741, age 95 [s/c] years.10 At the 2-3 June 1691 Sussex County court, it was presented that: Jacob Colloke was the Last court presented by the Grand Jury on Suspistion of not being married unt(o| Mary Lawerson according to the Laws of the Goverm1. The charge was again presented at the 1-2 September court, but no grand jury appeared, so “there was nothing don.” For the 2-4 December court, the grand jury— including Jacob Kollock— did appear, but the King's Attorney was absent. The issue does not again appear. She was identified as Mary Kollock when she gave testimony in a theft case in 1 69[ 5/]6. 1 1 Jacob was present in the middle colonies by February 16[89/]90 when he was on a grand jury for the court that met at Dover February 4-8. 12 Thereafter he appeared numerous times in records due to his residence in Lewes and his occupations as a cooper and merchant. At the court fol¬ lowing his jury duty at the 5-7 March 16189/190 Sussex County court, he petitioned for one four-acre lot in Lewes and for a front lot, which was granted if the lots were to be had.13 Jacob’s activities were not confined to Delaware. In 1695 he purchased kind in Philadelphia from John Duployves.1 1 His name occurs often in Philadelphia deeds.15 These and the land records and court entries in Delaware in which he was plaintiff16 suggest that Jacob provided mort¬ gages and bonds secured by land, plus advances for goods and services, in turn suggesting that he arrived in the middle colonies with some capital. 10 Sellers. Jacob’s will, written .30 December 1720 and probated 14 March 1720/1, names his wife Mary and seven children: Simon, Hannah, Jacob, Jane, Magdalene, Hester, and Cornelius. He signed with his JK mark.18 Mary Kollock widow of Jacob Kollock merchant of Lewes died between 1 May 1732 when she, with four of her children (Simon, Jacob, Jean, and Hester), was party to a deed19 and August 1744 when the New Jersey Supreme Court heard the case by Jacob Kollock and others executors |sic| of Maria Kollock vs. Samuel Burges administrator tie bonis non of William Trent.-0 17 “Ship Registers for the Port of Philadelphia, 1726-1775,” Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography \PMHB\ 23(1899):259, 379, 507; 24(19<><»:354, 358; 25( 190 1 ): 1 24, 563; 26( 1902):474. 18 Jacob Kollock will, Sussex County Wills A:1.30-34 (Delaware State Archives [DSA], RG92.30, roll 727). 19 Sussex County Deeds G7:37-39, 40-42, 338 (PHL *6,626). Presumably this was to settle a debt between the estates, but was heard at the Supreme Court level because not all parties were from New Jersey. The loose papers contain only an accounting of charges, which references the August and November terms 1 744 (file 2 1 436, New Jersey Supreme Court Cases 1 707- 1 844, NJSA reel 216). Kollock of Pennsylvania and Delaware 2010 335 Five of his seven children, likely all born in Delaware, left descendants. The surnames of the husbands of the two daughters who married but died childless— Royal and Phillips— are preserved in the given names of their nephews, possibly a deliberate (and slightly successful) attempt, in the case of Phillips, to secure an inheritance. Cornelius Koliock landed at Newport, It. I, in 1723 and started on a two days journey by stage coach to Boston. The stage stopped one night at Billings Tavern, on the shore of Billings Pond in Houghton, now Sharon, when Cornelius saw for the first time, Jerusha Billings the landlords dan., then IK, who on the 26th day of Sept, following became his wife. i oo Unfortunately, this sheds no light on why or where the children of this marriage remained in New England. Cornelius’ business, which later on included shipping interests, may have required that he travel and was therefore unable to care for the children. Cornelius married second, HANNAH BII.LINGS, daughter of Rev. Richard Billings of Little Compton, Rhode Island, a relative of his first wife. Han¬ nah the widow of Capt. Cornelius Koliock was buried 24 October 1774 from Lewes and Coolspring. i (> 1 In 1727, the will of William Pepper of Somerset County, Maryland, mentions that Jacob and Cornelius “Collick” have patents for land in Somerset County.162 Cornelius patented Lucks Addition 12 April 1750 in Worcester County, Maryland, which he willed to his son. 163 The will of Cornelius Koliock of Worcester County, Maryland, written 5 January 1771, names wife Hannah, children Simon Koliock, Sarah Griffeth, Mary Neill, Ryall Koliock, Lemuel Koliock, and William Koliock, and granddaughter Hester Griffith.
