Bartholomai Kuntzelmann and his son Philip Kuntzelmann: 1741 Immigrants Annette Kunselman Burgert* T MATING THE EUROPEAN VILLAGE of origin is often the 1...J most difficult and complex problem facing someone tracing eighteenth-century Pennsylvania German ancestry. The search for the European origins of the Kuntzelman ancestor covered a period of more than 20 years. All recommended methods of research were followed, to no avail. The immigrant ancestor was known to be Bartholomai Kuntzelman, who arrived on the ship Molly on 16 October 1741.1 European villages were known from several sources for other passengers on that ship. The records in those villages were searched, but the surname Kuntzelman was not located in any of the known villages.2 Research in various German and Swiss archives provided information on other families with the surname Kuntzelmann, but none of the information located through these sources fit this immigrant family.3 When searching the church records of the Northern Kraichgau for a volume about immigrants from that area of Germany, the author located a Kuntzelmann family at Hoffenheim.4 That family looked promising, but a thorough search of the Hoffenheim church books and all adjacent village church records failed to yield the desired information on the 1741 immigrant family. *Editor's Note: The author has been researching the genealogy of Pennsylvania German families for over 30 years. The recipient of the National Genealogical Society's Award of Merit in 1984, her publications- include Eighteenth Century Emigrants from GermanSpeaking Lands to North America, Volume I, The Northern Kraichgau (1983) and Volume II, The Western Palatinate (1986), both published by the Pennsylvania German Society; Colonial Pennsylvania Immigrants from Freinsheim in the Palatinate (1989) (reviewed in this issue); and, with Henry Z. Jones, Jr., Westerwald to America, Some 18th Century German Immigrants, a publication of the Pennsylvania Chapter, Palatines to America (1989). 81 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 82 As is so often the case, the European origin of the Kuntzelman family was located by a chance discovery. Carla MittelstaedtKubaseck, a wells-known German genealogist, located a marriage record in the church book of the Lutheran church at Wendelsheim, in Rheinland-Pfalz; it proved to be the marriage record of the immigrant Bartholomai Kuntzelmann. 5 The Lutheran church book at Wendelsheim then provided the needed due to trace his wife's family to nearby Morschheim.6 Church records for these villages unfortunately do not begin early enough to provide an extended lineage on either family. The information located to date is presented here with the hope that further investigations may yield additional information on both families. The immigrant Barthlemeus Consleymen, age 45, appears on Strassburger and Hinke's list 87 B as Barthlemas Cunslernan and on list 87 C as Bartollomae Conselman. The surname appears in the Wendelsheim Lutheran church records as Kiinzelmann, Kiintzelman, and Kunselman. He arrived with his brother-in-haw Christian Comens, age 24, the name immediately above his on the ship list. Christian Comens came from Morschheim, and two other passengers on this ship also came from this village: Herman Sauer (Sower), age 47, and Johan Wilhelm Sauer (Sower), age 17.8 Although the title page of the Wendelsheim Lutheran Church records indicates that the church's records start in 1686, there are only a few scattered entries for the early years in this record. The regular entries appear to start in 1711. It is possible that the few earlier entries were copied into the book from another source and that the records for the years 1686 to 1711 are not complete. The following records for the Kunzelmann family appear in this church book: 1734: died 28 July, Anna Kiintzelman, age 47 years.9 1736: died 24 October, Anna Margaretha Kunselman, age 32 10 years. 1737: married (at Wendelsheim) 16 February, Barth. Kilns& mann, widower, and Mar. Barbara Comens.11 They had children: 2. i. ii. Johann Philips,2 b. 23 Dec. 1737, bp. 26 Dec. 1737. Sponsors: Joh. Philip Comens and wife." Anna Catharina,2 b. 22 Nov. 1740, bp. 25 Nov. 1740. Bartholomai Kuntzelmann 83 Sponsors: Johann Peter Hahn and wife Anna Catharina. 1 3 The only other Comens mentioned in the Wendelsheim records was Philips Jacob Comens. The record of his marriage in 1730 indicated that he was from the nearby village of Morschheim. There is some confusion in the Wendelsheim church book about his given names. In some entries, he is named Johann Philip Comens; in other entries he appears as Philip Jacob or simply as Philip Comens. He and his wife, Sybilla Catharina Zimmer, had eight children baptized at Wendelsheim. His wife died in 1756, and Philip Jacob Comens died in 1774. This Comens family did not emigrate, but the marriage record provided the needed clue to trace Bartholomai Kunzelmann's wife in the Morschheim records." The Morschheim Lutheran church records start in 1710.15 The marriage record of Joh. Philipps Comens and Maria Esther the parents of Maria Barbara Comens, has not been located because the marriage occurred before the existing church books begin. Also, the baptismal records do not start early enough to include their probable first three children. These three children are included here as likely members of this family, because this is the only Comens family in this church book. job. Bartholomai1 Kunzelman and wife Maria Barbara Comens lived in Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co. (today Lebanon Co.) Pa. Bartholomew Kuntzelman appears on the Lebanon Twp. tax list in 1755. The 1759 tax list gives his name as Bartholomy Gunselman.28 By the time he made his will he had moved to Hanover Twp. Records are sparse for this first generation. If Bartholomai Kunzelmann had any real estate rights, he evidently transferred them to his son Philip before his death. "Bardol" Kuntzeiman's will was dated 25 Nov. 1773. It was filed for probate at Lancaster 28 Sept. 1774. He signed his will with a mark. After leaving a small legacy of "Five Shillings Sterling" to his son Philip Cuntzelman, he bequeathed the remainder of his estate to his wife Mary Barbara and appointed her the sole executrix. Witnesses were Peter Bucher and Peter Hedrich. The inventory of his possessions was compiled on 8 Oct. 1774, listing items valued at £48 4s 6(1.3° On 28 Sept. 1775, Peter Bucher (one of the witnesses to Bartholomai's will) married the widow Maria Barbara Kuntzlemann. Rev. John Casper Stoever performed the ceremony and mentioned in his records that they were both residing in Hanover Twp.31 No further records have been located for the daughter Anna Catharina, born 22 Nov. 1740 in Wendelsheim. She Bartholomai Kuntzelmann 85 is not mentioned in her father's will, and it is possible that she died young. Second Generation 2. Philip Kunzelmann, born 23 Dec. 1737 in Wendelsheim, is likely the Jacob Kunselman who married 1 June 1760 at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster, Pa., Barbara Diem." His full given name could have been Philip Jacob Kunzelmann, although his baptismal record gives the name as Johann Philips"; it may also simply be an error in the marriage record, since they could and did happen. By 1761 Philip Kunzelman appears in the Trinity Lutheran Church records at Reading, Pa., with a wife Barbara, and their first child was sponsored at baptism by an Adam Diem and wife Barbara.34 In 1769, 1770, and 1771 Philip Kunzelman appears on the tax lists for the east end of Hanover Twp., Lancaster (now Lebanon) Co.35 In about 1772 he removed to Northumberland Co.36 It appears that the family left this frontier region during the Revolutionary War period and moved to Stumpstown (now Fredericksburg, Lebanon Co.). Philip Cunselman appears on the 1782 Stumpstown tax list," and was enrolled in the Third Company, Second Battalion, Lancaster County Militia in 1782.38 He was an innkeeper by occupation, and his name appears on a "List of Public House keepers recommended at May sessions, 1783, and August session, 1783, for the county of Lancaster."59 An original deed confirms his occupation: "Philip Kuntzelman of Stumps Town, Lancaster County, Tavernkeeper, for and in consideration of the sum of Thirty Pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to me in hand paid by Ennion Williams of Bethel Township, Berks County, Merchant, grants to the said Ennion Williams a certain tract or parcel of land situated in Berks County surveyed or to be surveyed on the Branches of the Swatara at the foot of the Broad Mountain by virtue of a Warrant in the name of Philip Contsleman for 25 acres dated 1783.4o In the 15 May 1776" ... "to have and to hold" dated 21 May 1785 and 1.786, Philip Kunselman warranted several other tracts of land "over the Broad Mountain in the County of Becks. "41 The largest tract, containing over 300 acres on Pine Creek, was called "Indian Camp."42 Several notices in the Readinger Zeitung newspaper from 1796 to 1801 mention public sales that were being held "at the Inn of Philip Kuntzelman in Pinegrove Township, over the Blue Mountain."" The path from Tulpehocken to Sunbury passed through his land. The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 86 Philip Kuntzelman (also Kunzelman, Kunselman) and wife Barbara had children: 3. 1. His will was dated 10 July 1809 and probated 29 Aug. 1809. He resided in Mahantango Twp. Heirs listed are his wife Barbara, and his children Philip, John, Henry, and Barbara, wife of Philip Artz. His wife Barbara and his son John were named executors. Witnesses were Abraham Hoffa and George Klinger.48 No burial record has been located for his wife Barbara, but final disposal of his estate occured in 1830, and she probably died just prior to that distribu7 tion.49 Third Generation 3. Philip Adams Kunzelman, born 23 Dec. 1761, married (1) Her maiden name is not certain; descendants Catharina give her name as Foster or Ferster.5° Except for his baptismal record, he usually appears as Philip Kuntzelman (or Kunzelman), Jr., in Pennsylvania records. About 1791 to 1793, he and his family left Pennsylvania and moved to Broome County, N.Y., where the surname became Councilman. Smith's Hisimy of Broome County, New York says: "Philip Councilman came in 1793 and settled where the hamlet of Glen Aubrey is now situated. He had quite a large family. The settlement at that point consisted of Philip Councilman, Philip jr., Peter, Henry, and John. The place was known for many years as Councilman Settlernent."51 Catharine Councilman died 22 Nov. 1822 at Nanticoke, Broome Co., N.Y. 52 Philip Councilman married (2) Sally Moyer."
