THE GERMAN ORIGINS OF GEORGE FELTY (HANS JERG VELTIN) OF LEBANON COUNTY by Clifford L. Stott, AG, CG, FASG' PART I: PATERNAL ANCESTRY1 A mong the German Palatine immigrants who flooded into Pennsylva¬ nia during the eighteenth century was a young man named Hans Jerg Veltin. George Felty, as he came to be known, settled by 1741 in the Swatara Valley, where a large Palatine settlement was gathering.2 George’s surname appears with many variations in Pennsylvania records— Velty, Velde, Velten, Felty, Feltin, and others. In time, Felty became the prevailing spelling. George Felty raised a large family with numerous descendants living today. Some of those descendants have asserted in Internet postings and elsewhere that George was born 24 June 1714 in “Osterdingen,” a place not known to exist in Germany. No credible documentation is supplied. Nevertheless, the claims raise intriguing questions. What is the origin of the place? Where was George’s birth date obtained? Why are his parents’ names not provided with the birth information? This article explores these issues and extends the paternal ancestry of George Felty in Ger¬ many. The earliest located reference to the family’s origins is in an undated four-page typescript compiled by Edgar H. Berge (1920-1977) of Philadelphia titled “Felty Family Record.”3 No sources are cited, and some of the claims seem unlikely, but Berge states that John George Felty was born 24 June 1714 in Osterdingen, Germany. Berge also states that George's wife was Anna Marie Heilze, who was born 4 December 1725 in Klonen, Switzerland. Since no parents’ names are mentioned for George or Anna Marie, it appears that their birth dates came from something other than baptismal entries, such as gravestone inscriptions, family Bible 2661 West 370 North, Provo, UT 84601 (cliffstott@broadweave.net). The author wishes to thank the German specialists on the staff of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, for their frequent and valuable assistance. The research was done for Evan D. Johnson of American Fork, Utah, a descendant of George Felty. The maternal ancestry will be presented in a forthcoming article in the Pennsyl¬ vania Genealogical Magazine. 2 The area is now part of Lebanon County, which was created in 1813 from Dau¬ phin County. Dauphin was created by a division of Lancaster County in 1785. 3 Edgar H. Berge, “Felty Family Record,” (typescript [FHL #599.774, item 10]). Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 (20 1 1 ) 101 102 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 entries, or some other family record. No evidence has been found that George’s first wife was Anna Marie Heilze, of Klonen, Switzerland. Anna Marie, born 4 December 1725 as given in Berge, would have been only twelve years old when the first of George’s children was born. Perhaps she was confused with the wife of a George Weldy of York County, whose wife was named Anna Maria. Another possibility is that George’s second wife, Anna Maria Meyer, was a widow with the maiden surname Heilze. Primary evidence for the identification of George Felty begins with his emigration record. Official emigration registers of Baden show Georg Veltin of Blankenloch paid for his freedom and was authorized 25 Janu¬ ary 1738 to emigrate to Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.4 He is no doubt the Hans Jurg Fetter, age 26, who arrived in Philadel¬ phia in October 1738 aboard the snow Fox,5 which sailed from Rotter¬ dam, Holland, and last from Plymouth, England, Charles Ware master. The ship carried 47 male passengers over the age of 15, 23 women, and 6 children. Among the other passengers traveling on the Fox were Bastian Felti, age 20, and Adam Ulrich , age 24, shown below to be his brother and brother-in-law. The Fox passengers signed the oaths of allegiance and of abjuration in Philadelphia 12 October 1738, among the signatures are those of Hans Georg Velten (his * mark), Bastian Felte, and Adam Ullrich ,6 George was first recorded in the Swatara Valley when his daughter Maria Elisabetha was baptized 4 October 1741 in Swatara Township.7 George Felty received warrant #228 for 100 acres in [now] Bethel Township, Lancaster County, 9 March 1753; it was patented 16 April 1828 in Lebanon County under his name, although he was by then deceased.8 The land was surveyed twice: 30 April 1757 for 161!4 acres and 1 November 1787 for 173 acres.9 1 Werner Hacker, Auswanderungen cuts Baden und detn Breisgau (Stuttgart: Kon¬ rad Theiss Verlag, 1980), 647. s Some researchers have stated that the ship was named Snow Fox. The ship was actually a snow (pronounced “snoo”), a type of brig with two square-rigged masts and a smaller trysail mast abaft the main mast. ” Ralph Beaver Strassburger and William John Hinke. Pennsylvania German Pio¬ neers, 3 volumes (Norristown: Pennsylvania German Society, 1934), 1:231-33 (tran¬ scriptions of lists A, B, and C), 2:239-40 (images of lists B and C). Editor’s note: Because he signed by mark, the name of Hans Jerg was written by clerks for lists 11 and C |the oaths); the clerk for List 60B mangled his name as Hans Elrich F[l?]elzer (transcribed by Strassburger and Hinke as Helger, followed by the comment “[!]”), who was definitely the Hans Georg Velten of List 60C, based on both position in the list and his mark. Vital events cited in Genealogical Summary. 8 Records of the [Pennsylvania] Land Office, Warrant Registers, 1733-1957, RG-17, series #17.88, Lancaster County, 68, warrant F228, at the Pennsylvanaia State Archives (image online at phmc.state.pa.us). 9 Records of the [Pennsylvania] Land Office, Copied Survey Books, 1681-1912, RG17, series #17.1 14, book C-59:57-58 (image online at phmc.state.pa.us). The difference in acreage was a result of the redrawing of the eastern border of the land. In 1757 that 2011 German Origins of George Felty of Lebanon County 103 George Fouty was assessed in Bethel Township in 1771 for 130 acres, one horse, and two head of cattle. The name is recorded as George Felty in later tax rolls. In 1772 George was assessed for 150 acres, two horses, and four head of cattle. He is found in published tax rolls of Bethel Town¬ ship through 1782.10 George Felty was enumerated, possibly twice, in the 1790 census of Dauphin County, with two males and one female.1 1 ORIGINS Blankenloch, Baden. Lutheran registers show that Hans Jerg Veltin and Catharina, widow of Maximilian Herter [s/c], were married 2 April 1737, the year before his arrival in Philadelphia; Catharina Seeger and Maximil¬ ian Hertel had been married in Blankenloch 21 March 1727.12 Blankenloch was also the home of Adam Ullrich, another Fox passen¬ ger who settled in the Swatara Valley. Adam married Juliana Seeger, the sister of Catharina Seeger, 7 September 1734,'ÿ making Adam a brotherin-law of George Felty. Adam Ulrich and wife were sponsors at the 19 March 1757 baptism of Juliana, daughter of George Veltey of Swatara. Although Hans Jerg Veltin is well established in Blankenloch, his birth is not recorded there. A review of the names of localities in Germany quickly highlighted Ofterdingen , which is, of course, suspiciously similar to Osterclingen named in secondary sources. Strong evidence was found that George was born in Ofterdingen, Wiirttemberg, about 75 miles to the south of Blankenloch. The Lutheran church records of Ofterdingen show that Hans Jerg Veltin, son of Johannes Veltin and Catharina Wagner, was born 14 June 1714, again suspiciously similar to the birth date of 24 June 1714 proposed by Berge and others. Establishing the link to Ofterdingen is not based solely on a compari¬ son with questionable secondary sources. Three additional pieces of evi¬ dence establish a link to Ofterdingen. Johannes and Catharina Veltin, the line abutted the lands of Adam Bright, but by 17H7 it abutted “George Felty’s other Land.’’ 10 “Returns and Assessments, County of Lancaster, 1771-1782,” Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd series, 17:156, 237, 386, 680, 838. 11 George Felty households, 1790 U.S. Census, Dauphin County, pages 193 and 210 (NARA M637, roll 8). It is possible that one or both of these enumerations is for the son of the name, but Henry Miller. Peter Soiler, and Bastin Waggoner appear within a few names on both pages, suggesting duplication (although their counts do not match exactly). 12 Vital events cited in Genealogical Summary. *3 Brigitte Burkett, Emigrants from Baden and Wiirttemberg (Camden, Me.: Picton Press, 1996), 290-91. Juliana Seeger was baptized in Blankenloch 19 November 1710, Catherine 23 October 1705, both daughters of Hans Martin Seeger and his wife Maria Barbara. Adam Lllrich, son of Hans Jerg Ulrich and wife Anna Catharina Nagel, was bap¬ tized in Blankenloch 22 February 1717. When Hans Jerg Ulrich died in 1731, his widow married Martin Seeger. Hence, Adam Ulrich married his stepsister. (Evangelische Kirche Blankenloch, Baden, Kirchenbuch [FHL *1,272,867)). 104 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 parents of Hans Jerg, had three children born in Ofterdingen, after which they disappear from the parish church book. However, they emerge in Blankenloch in 1728 when their last known child, Anna Catharina, was baptized 18 May 1728. Johannes' occupations in Ofterdingen and Blank¬ enloch are identical. He was a nonnenmacher (animal castrator) in the records of both parishes. This occupation is identical to Hans Jerg Veltin’s occupation of nonnenschneider recorded on his marriage record. Finally, Johannes and Catharina Veltin had a son Sebastian, born in Ofterdingen 12 February 1719, an excellent match for the 20-year-old Bastian Felte who arrived in Philadelphia on the Fox with Hans Jerg Veltin in 173B. VELTIN FAMILY OF OFTERDINGEN, WURTTEMBERG 1. HANS JERG11 VELTIN ( Hans1 ), the son of Hans' Veltin of Pfeffingen, Wiirttemberg,14 was born say 1656 (estimating marriage at 25). He is called a nonnenmacher (animal castrator) on the baptismal records of his chil¬ dren. Hans Jerg died 23 August 1714 in Cannstatt, Wurttemberg, and was buried there the same day. The following entry (translated from the Ger¬ man) is recorded in the Ofterdingen Lutheran burial register: Hans Jerg Veltin, nonnenmacher, died 23 August 1714 and was buried in Cannstatt. While returning from Knittlingen, where he was visiting a daugh¬ ter, he came down with a high fever. He made it to the town of Cannstatt [now part of the city of Stuttgart]; here he was directed to the poor house. He died and was buried there. The deacon of Cannstatt sent a notification to Ofterdingen dated 22 October 1714. The Cannstatt Lutheran burial register confirms that Hans Jerg Veltin died in the poor house 23 August 1714. Hans Jerg married first 11 July 1681 in Ofterdingen, Wiirttemberg, APOLLONIA SCHMID, daughter of Basti Schmid and his wife Margretha Hof (see Schmid Family, below).16 She was baptized 27 August 1656 in Ofter¬ dingen and died there 13 August 1704. Hans married second 16 February 1705 in Ofterdingen BARBARA HILLFITTER, widow of Bernard Schelling. Barbara was born 1 1 October 1646 in Mossingen, Wurttemberg, a nearby town, daughter of Hans Hillfitter and wife Margareta.17 She died 17 Sep¬ tember 1723 in Ofterdingen and was buried there the following day. 14 The father of Hans Jerg Veltin is identified on his marriage record as Hans Veltin of Pfeffingen, a town about 15 miles from Ofterdingen. The Lutheran registers of Pfeffingen begin in 1656. No baptismal entry was found in the register for Hans Jerg Veltin or any Veltin in the early years of the register. 16 Evangelische Kirche Cannstatt (Stuttgart), Kirchenbuch (FHL *1,055,935). 16 All references to Ofterdingen Lutheran records in this article were found in Evan¬ gelische Ofterdingen, Wiirttemberg, Kirchenbuch (FHL *1,457,480 [births/baptisms); *1,457,481 [marriages]; #1,457,482 [deaths]). 1_ These details are in her Ofterdingen marriage record. 2011 German Origins of George Felty of Lebanon County 105 Children of HansJerg" and Apollonia (Schmid) Veltin:18 i. They remained in Ofterdingen until at least 1719 and are last recorded in the town of Blankenloch, Baden, about 75 miles north of Ofterdingen, where their child was baptized in 1728. Death records for Johannes and Catharina have not been found. Johannes was consistently identified as a nonnenmacher (animal castrator), an occupation he shared with his father and his son HansJerg. Berge [note 3] states John George was born in 1743, which is compatible with the date for the previous child. There is no absolute proof that he was the son of George Felty. However, besides having the same name as his suspected father, John George was living in Bethel Township when he married. No proof has been found, but the marriage is likely as Henry Jegly and his wife Anna Barbara had at least two children whose bap¬ tismal sponsors were brothers of Anna Barbara Felty: Elizabeth Jegly was baptized 26 April 1789 at Swatara Reformed Church, Jonestown, sponsors Ulrich and Elizabeth Felty; John was baptized there 13 April 1794, sponsors Sebastian and Elizabeth Felt}'; also, Henry and Barbara Jeckily were sponsors 26 December 1797 for George, son of Ulrich and Elizabeth I-eldy (Wright, Early Church Records of Lebanon County [note 26], 140, 142). 56 Ofterdingen death and marriage records before 1639 are not extant. 57 The mother is identified in the baptisms as Barbara. 58 The mother is identified in the baptisms as Apollonia. 1 10 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 v.
