Eight Mary Moores from the Diary of Phoebe Wickersham rr HE DIARY OF PHOEBE WICKERSHAM was kept from 1826 to 1875, being a record of Quaker families near Philadelphia. Miss Wickersham's relatives moved West in the 1850's and took the little book with them. In 1908, the book was in the possession of a Miss Wickersham who, on going to Europe, left it with other genealogical papers, with Mrs. Scott Roundtree of Piedmont, California. Miss Wickersham died in Europe, and Mrs. Roundtree sent the diary to the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. They, in turn, presented a copy of the frail volume to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in 1935. "In the 8th month, 1843, and for some time previous there were belonging to Bart Meeting of Friends, eight May Moores, as follows: John's wife, Mary, and daughter Mary Ann. Gainor's wife, Mary C. and daughter Mary. Moses' wife, Mary K. and daughter Mary Anna. Samuel's wife, Mary M. and daughter Mary Laura. Asahel's daughter, Mary W. In the 9th month of 1843, John's wife died. The following Spring his daughter was married to Cyrus Simmons. In the Fall of 1846, Moses and his wife both died and their daughter was removed to the limits of another meeting. About two years after this Gainor's daughter died and soon after his family removed to Philadelphia. The Spring of 1849 Samuel's family removed to the West, they also then having a daughter of that name; and Benjamin Moore's a few years before, who also had a daughter of that name. The Fall of 1850 Asahel's daughter went to Westtown and has been within the limits of the meeting but little since. So that in the space of about seven years, the name Mary Moore had vanished from the meeting, where so lately there had been ten members of that name and eight at one time. There has not been another of that name since to the present date, 1858." 54 Eight Man, Moores 55 "A Summary of Mary Moores: Mother, Mary Moore. John's wife, Mary and daughter Mary Ann.
