Jared Ingersoll Helen Hutchison Woodroofe ESCRIBED AS "THE ABLEST JURY LAWYER IN PHILADELPHIA", Jared Ingersoll was the first of a long and distinguished line of Philadelphia lawyers. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, where his father Jared Ingersoll, Sr. was a member of the bar, he came to Philadelphia a few years after his graduation from Yale. His lather had been appointed commissioner of admiralty appeals for the Middle Colonies, which office he assumed in Philadelphia in 1771. Young Jared was placed with Joseph Reed to study law. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1773. He was sent to London in 1774 to study at the Middle Temple, according to Nathaniel Burt [The Perennial Philadelphians, 19634 his lather considered this as "a Revolutionary vacation and safekeeping". However, Jared Ingersoll returned to Philadelphia "a confirmed Patriot". Joseph Reed, his mentor, invited him to look after the interests of his clients in Philadelphia, while he was otherwise occupied. He rapidly became one of the most celebrated lawyers in Philadelphia. In "The Leaders of the Old Bar in Philadelphia", the Honorable Horace Binney described Jared Ingersoll: "He was of good height -three or four inches short of six feet, spare of flesh and perfectly well made and erect, expressing much dignity, with the ease and air of good society. His complexion was fair and his hair light colored and his features not large or salient. His carriage was rather remarkable . . His personal virtue was as straight, upward and erect as his person, but he was a religious man also . When he rose to a jury no lawyer could be better prepared with a knowledge of the facts and the law that bore upon them, and he chose his point of assault and his field of defense with the tact and decision that He never stumbled upon an belong to a first rate commander . awkward phrase nor said a bitter thing nor uttered a pointless expression, nor began a sentence before the thought was ready for it, and the language for the thought." Active in public affairs, he held many public offices. In 1780 he 127 128 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine was elected a member of the Continental Congress, and played a major part in the revision of the Articles of Confederation. This made him an ideal choice as a member of Pennsylvania's delegation to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. His modesty of person made him a quiet participant in this body, but nevertheless an able one. When New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify the new Constitution on 21 June 1788, the Federalists of Philadelphia decided to celebrate with a Federal Procession on July 4th. Virginia quickly followed New Hampshire to become the tenth state to ratify. One of the ten "gentlemen representing the states that have adopted the Federal Constitution was Jared Ingersoll, Esq. marching for Connecticut, each bearing a flag with the name of the state he represents in gold letters and walking arm in arm, emblematical of the Union". He was a member of the Philadelphia Common Council in 1789 and from 1798 to 1801 he was city solicitor. From 1790 to 1799 and again from 1811 to 1817 he was attorney general of Pennsylvania; for a short time, 1800-1801, he was United States district attorney for Pennsylvania. In 1811 the Federalists of Pennsylvania nominated him for the vice-presidency. From March 1821 until his death in 1822 he was presiding judge of the district court for the city and county of Philadelphia. [Dictionary of American Biography.] In 1791 he was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. He argued many cases involving federal relations, the constitutionality of an act of Congress, and the jurisdiction of the courts. He died in Philadelphia, on 31 October 1822, at the age of seventy-three. Many of Jared Ingersoll's descendants followed their eminent forebear in the legal profession. In the second generation his three sons, Charles Jared, Joseph Reed and Edward Ingersoll were all lawyers. Their sons in the third generation added three more lawyers to the list, Charles, Edward and Jared Ingersoll. Other sons were a businessman, a navy officer and a southern planter. Among the sons-in-law of this generation were two lawyers and two doctors. With the fourth generation, three lawyers, one being Charles Edward Ingersoll. Other family members in this generation produced a naval officer, two doctors, a merchant and a college professor. In the fifth generation the tradition of law was carried on by Robert Sturgis Ingersoll, while his brother Charles Jared Ingersoll fared Ingersoll 129 followed their father's role as a railroad official. Another descend4nt was an architect, a son-in-law was a banker. The Philadelphia Ihgersolls were, and continue to be, leaders in the professional and civic affairs of the city. 1. "Charles Jared Ingersoll was ambitious for public office, which was surely in accord with his New England and Puritan heritage but unusual for his class in Philadelphia. Although his grandfather Jared had been a famous Connecticut Loyalist, his father a leading Federalist, and he himself a federal man in the beginning, Ingersoll, like Thomas McKean before him (their descendants today are kin), eventually became a staunch francophile and jeffersonian and then a Jackson Democrat." [E. Digby Baltzell: Puritan Boston and Quaker Philadelphia, (Boston, 1979) 202.] In 1812 he was elected to Congress, where he became chairman of the judiciary committee and a member of the foreign relations committee.
