Grubb Family Bible Contributed by RINEHART SKEEN POTTS In the possession of the writer is a Bible measuring approximately 29 by 23 centimeters, 9 centimeters thick, and bound in faded red leather. On the second leaf (three before the title page) is written: George Grubb Sr./Family Bible 1846—/Given to his daughter Anna M. Skeen/ Nov. 1871 The title page reads: Perry's new stereotype edition./The Holy Hible,/containing the/Old and New Testaments,/ together with The Apocrypha./Translated from the original tongues, /and/ with the former translations diligently compared and revised;/with/Cane's marginal notes and references./To which are added,/an index;/ an alphabetical table/of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their significations;/ table of Scripture weights, measures, and coins, &c.;/Concordance, and the Psalms of David in metre./ Philadelphia:/John B. Perry, 198 Market Street./ New York,/ Naffs and Cornish, 278 Pearl Street./ 1846 The Bible was given by Anna M. Skeen to her daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Thompson Skeen, who later gave it to her son, Joseph Harrison Potts, Jr. He in turn gave it to his oldest son, the present writer, together with other family records, which will be published separately. A number of documents are inserted, loose, in the Bible, and are described below, as are the marriages, births and deaths recorded in the section usually set aside for this information, between the Apocrypha and the New Testament. Inserted (loose) between pages 604 and 605 (Hosea) is a four-page leaflet (a single sheet, folded once) comprising the program for memorial services held 25 May 1924, by General John F. Reynold's (sic—spelled "Reynolds" elsewhere) Post No. 71, Department of Pennsylvania, Grand Army of the Republic. The location was the Memorial Church of St. Paul, 15th and Porter Streets, Philadelphia, Rev. Stanley V. Wilcox, rector. Those members who had died during the preceding year were honored. Four are listed: John Atkinson, William S. Porter, R. A. Skeen, and Edward Briggs. Folded inside the leaflet is a white satin streamer, 7 by 44 centimeters, with "R. A. Skeen" in raised gold letters. The leaflet indicates R. A. Skeen died II November 1923, aged 76 years. Inserted (loose) between pages 96 and 97 of the Apocrypha is a very elaborate Valentine card, together with the postmarked and stamped wrapper in which it was mailed. The postmark does not reveal the year, but "Feb. 14" and "Phila." are clear. The stamp is blue, three cents, bearing an illustration of a locomotive. The card is addressed to Miss Anne (sic) 37 38 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Grubb, 1023 Tasker Street, Philadelphia, City. Since Anna Grubb was married in November 1871 at the age of twenty, the Valentine was sent to her in 1871 or earlier. Inserted (loose) between pages 402 and 403 (Psalms 33 to 37) are two Marriage Certificates, the first on thin pink paper, 12 by 20 centimeters, the second on moderately thick white paper, with engraved border designs and preprinting in gold. In each case, italics indicate entries made in handwriting: This will certify, that on the twenty second day of November 1846 in the city of Wilmington and State of Delaware, George Grubb, of the one part, and Elizabeth H. Abbott of the other, having agreed and covenanted to live together as Man and Wife, and having plighted the solemn vows of Duty and Affection, were by me united in the honorable and sacred bonds of Lawful Matrimony. J. Kennaday, Minister of the Gospel. This is to certify, that Rinehart A. Skeen of Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania and Anna M. Grubb of Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania were joined together in Holy Matrimony by me, on the fifth day of November in the year of our Lord, One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Seventy One. Wm. Bicentennial Conference in 1976 on American Genealogy and Family History In connection with the celebration of the Bicentennial of American Independence, The Western Reserve Historical Society is planning a Bicentennial Conference on American Genealogy and Family History for August 9-12 (Monday through Thursday), 1976, at Cleveland, Ohio. This Conference will be the first major genealogical conference since the World Conference on Records in Salt Lake City in 1969. Sessions will relate solely to American genealogy and family history with emphasis on records of the Revolutionary War period, the migrations westward following the Revolution and the establishment of families who migrated to America during the 19th century. Leading genealogists and history specialists are being asked to participate. In addition to The Western Reserve Historical Society, which has one of the outstanding genealogy libraries in America, sponsors of the Conference are the American Society of Genealogists, the Ohio Genealogical Society, and the History Department of Case Western Reserve University. Headquarters for the Conference will be the Park Plaza Inn, 8935 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106, a beautiful modem facility completed in 1974, and about a mile from The Western Reserve Historical Society. Accommodations are also assured in the dormitories of Case Western Reserve University which adjoins The Western Reserve Historical Society. Special features of the occasion will include a Sunday pre-conference reception to meet participants, and a tour of Cleveland's famed cultural center. Additional opportunities for research will be afforded those who stay beyond the Thursday night banquet. For further information about the Conference write to Mr. John Large, Jr., Conference Coordinator, The Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio 44106.
