LAND RECORD MAGIC, SCOTCH·IRISHTO GERMAN THE WILEY/WALY FAMILY OF YORK D CUMBERLAND COUNTIES by Patricia Law Hatcher, PASG. M ichael Wiley was a immigrant who settled about 1800 in the northernmo t precincts of York County, 1 in th predominantly ScotchIrish townships of Fairview and Monaghan, which are separated from umberland County by Yellow Breeches Creek. His name was ScotchIrish. His daughter married into the Scotch-Irish Andersons, founder of Andersontown. It was obvious that Michael Wiley was a Scotch-Irish immigrant-until deeds were carefully studied, turning him into Michael Wahle, a second-generation German. The only biographical mention of Michael is in a sketch of his grandson, Joseph Anderson, the "son of William N. and Mary (Wiley) Anderson. . . . William Anderson . . . came into possession of the farm now owned by his son, our subject, through his father-in-law, Michael Wiley, who purchased it from a Mr. May." It was the search for these deeds (which were never found) that hinted at a far different family saga. Deeds indexed under "Wiley" turned out to have unexpected internal spelling variants, such as Wihley, Wable, and Wahly. Variations in spellings of surnames are not usually meaningful. Anglicization of names, differing ethnicity of the speaker and recorder, and illiteracy all mean that it is a rare surname that is spelled only one way in records. However, we expect the variances to be within certain bounds. Normally, the various spellings are phonetically similar. As each new Wiley spelling variant was uncovered and followed, additional records often emerged. The township to the south of Fairview and Monaghan is Warrington. It is not overly distant from Andersontown where Michael is buried. It • Patricia Law Hatcher is the editor of the Pennsylvania GenealogicalMagaz.ine. Most of I.he references are to a Wiley &mily in Harford County, Maryland There is another cluster of Wilcys in the southeastern townships of Fawn, Hopewell. and Peach Bottom. They appear to be connected to the Wiley family in Harford County, Maryland. 134 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magaztne Vol 4-4(2005) 2005 Wiley/Waly Family of York and Cumberland 135 would not be urprising to find Michael's family in Warrington. But the Wiley family in Warrington Township was dearly German. Were there perhaps two different men of similar names? The adjoining property owners on the deeds suggested that the land might not be all that far separated, although in different town hips. The puzzle is recapped here through censuses and deeds, arranged chronologically. • 1786 February 14. Adam Wyley acquired a warrant for an "additional• 15 acres, adjoining William Griffith dee-cased, Joseph Taylor, and other land of said Wylcy in Warrington Township. When the 12nd was surveyed on 5 May, it was found to contain 23 acres and 34 perches; an additional neighbor identified was Thomas Atherton. 2 • 1790. Adam Willey with three adult males and four females was enumerated in Warrington Township.3 • 1794 October 30. Draught for Adam Wahle, 131 acres 44 perches, adjoining Thomas Mcmillan, Simean Hutton, Alexander Elliot, Joseph Taylor, Andrew Rowe, Hugh orthland.4 • 1795 June 23. Adam Wahle and wife Maria Ablina/ Ablonia of Warrington Township sold to son Michael Wahle of Warrington 131 acres, plus timberland in Warrington, adjoining Hugh Northland, Andrew Rose, Joseph Taylor, Alexander Elliot, Thomas McNaughton, Thomas McMillan. In exchange, Michael agreed to pay £425 and support his parents in their old age. 5 The spelling of the surname, but more surely the given name of the wife, indicate that this is a German family. • 1799 August 22. Michael Wiley of Warrington canceled the 1795 letter of agreement with Adam and Mary Wiley of Warrington. Michael Wahle signed. 6 • 1800. George Wtley (26<45) enumerated in Warrington with wife, son under 10; Adam Wtley (45+) in adjacent household with wife.7 Michael not found. • 1801 February 28. Daniel Henry of Monaghan sold to Michael Wahle of Monaghan [note change of township] for £750, 131 acres 145 perches [the acreage turns out to be a coincidence] plus 2 acres 146 perches in Monaghan, adjoining Daniel Jones, Isaac Norton, David James, James Anderson, Samuel Henry. At the same time, John Goswciler sold to Michael part of the same parcel, d~ scribed as being in Monaghan and Newberry township .8 • 1801. Ludwig Kubcler von Heuen was named as guardian of Adam Waly, naming father George Waly, deceased of Biebenorbis in Commenrurey Amt. SChwabish Hall in Germany.9 • 1802 December 22. George Whaley, eldest son of Adam Whaley of Warrington Township, petitioned to have Adam's 16~acre traet appraised, naming five 2 Land record photocopies ,4329 and #11236 at Historical Society of York County. 3 Heads of Families, 1790: Pennsylvania, 279. 4 Photocopy #10757 of warrant at Historical Soctery of York County. 5 York County Deeds 2N:72-73; FHL#22,l 10. 6 York County Deeds 20:314; FHL 122,110. 7 George and Adam Wiley households, 1800 USCensus, Wa"ington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. page 208; NARAM32, roll 44. 8 York County Deeds 2P:141, 143; FHL *22,111. Michael Wiley of Fairview, also called Midnel Wahly, purchased from John James of Fairview 156 acres in Fairview, adjoining Martin Copenhefer, William Atkinson, Daniel She2rbonc, James Anderson, Daniel Hare. 11 1810. Michael Wiley was enumerated in Fairview with wife, two ons, one daughter, all under 10. 12 1810. George Wtley was enumerated in Warrington with wife, two son , and one daughter 10<16, and two sons and two daughters under 10. I3 1820 April 3. Michael Wihley yeoman of Fairview and wife Mary sold to David Trevor for $600, 31 acres adjoining George Atkinson, John More, Isaac Norton, Michael Wthley, part of two tracts patented by William Atkinson who died inte tate, partitioned but not taken by any of the heirs and sold on 3 April to Michael WihJey. 14 1820. Michael Wiley was enumerated in Fairview with wife, two sons, two daughters. An attempt was made to allocate the events to two separate families with a Michael in each. But no matter which way the records were sorted, they refused to be divided neatly. Instead, what emerged was a single family of German origins, whose name over time permuted-including their personal signatures-to fit better with the predominantly ScotchIrish community in which they lived. The definitive evidence for the connection came from the record of Michael's death, which occurred during the brief time period in the 1850s when Pennsylvania was recording deaths. • 1853 February 18. The death of Michael "Wihley," certified by George Wihley of Fairview [his son], gives his birth date [but not place] and names his parents as Adam and Mary.15 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1. The record, certified by George Wihley of Fairview [his son], gives his birth date (but not plac ) and names his parents as Adam and Mary.46 He left no will. He married soon after 1800 (if she was the mother of his children) MARY-?-, who was born between 1770 and 1780. It is not known if she as from Warrington Township where Michael's family lived, or Fairview, where Michael purchased property in 1803, 47 although it seems most likely that she wa from Warrington. In 1810 Michael Wiley was living in Fairview Township, with his young family, two boys and a girl, all under 10.48 James Ander on-whose on would marry Michael's daughter in the 1830s-wa seventeen hou eholds away. The la t of their children, their daughter Mary, was born in 1811. It iS the 1820 census that tells us the most about Michael. There are two boys and two girls 10<16 in the household (possibly the extra girl is a servant). This censu asked two questions beyond the sex and age of the resid nt . Thu we learn that Michael was naturaHzcd and that there were thr persons in the household engaged in agriculture. 49 The land in this area i good for farming and for orchards. 44 Rudolph Wiley household, 1850 S Census, Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylv~mia, page 413, #l 17/1420; NARAM-432,roll 840. 45 Visit by the author in cptc-mber, 1999. 46 Yit21 Records card fllc, Historical Society of York County. 47 York County Deeds 2R:424-25; FHL #22,112. David and his wife Sarah are buried in Andersontown cemetery. Given their ages and the date of the sale, it is quite po sible that David was-or was about to become-their son-in-Jaw.50 At some point, Michael suppo edly purchased land from -?- May, which he sold to his son-in-law William Anderson, but neither deed has been found. 51 Michael's wife was still living in 1830. She was younger than he, born between 1770 and 1780. Three males, aJJbetwe n 20 and 30 Qohn, George, and probably a hired hand) and two females (Mary 15<20 and the unidentified daughter 20<30) were in the household. William and Rennix Anderson were in the same area of Fairview township.5 2 The census enumerator for 1840 did not do his job. He apparently began by making an alphabetized list of whom he thought lived in the town hip, then went to visit them. He did not make it to all household , mi ing a ubstantial number. Michael's name is listed, but with no tick marks. The household of his eldest son John did get a visit, showing entries compatible with the 1850 census. 53 Michael lived a long life, as recognized by his tombstone in Ander ontown (Bethel Cemetery), Monaghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania.54 In Memory of Michael Wiley Born November 11, 1767 departed this life February 18, 1853 aged 85 years, 3 months & 7 days Children of Michaef Wiley and possibly Mary-?-, all born tn Pennsylvania: i.
