Final copy 31 January, 2010 52 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine [Vol. 42 Mrs. G. G. McNeill. M. Louisa, wife of George G. McNeill, Esq., died Wednesday evening at the residence of the family on East Montgomery Avenue, North Wales, after an illness of one week. She had a complication of diseases, superinduced by a heavy cold. Deceased was the daughter of Rosina and William Hannis, and was born in the “Neck,” Philadelphia, sixty-one years ago. Her mother was a Miss Kochersperger, and was related to the Doylestown family of that name. John Wanamaker, the merchant prince, was a first cousin, and in his youthful days always spent his summer vacations with the family, who then resided in Whitemarsh, this county. He was always a favorite with them. They delighted to have him spend his leisure time on the farm, and John greatly enjoyed the visits. Deceased is survived by her husband and four children–William, of Lansdale, and Morris, Rose and Annie residing at home. Two sisters and one brother also survive–William C., a well-known lawyer of Philadelphia; Mrs. Leonard Culp, of Centre Square, and Miss Annie M. Hannis, of Philadelphia. Mrs. McNeill was of amiable disposition, and thoroughly devoted to the family circle. The funeral services will take place Monday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, from her husband’s residence. Interment private in the Lutheran cemetery. Funeral of Mrs. McNeill. The funeral of M. Louisa, wife of G. G. McNeill, Esq., of North Wales, took place on Monday afternoon, from the residence of the family, on East Montgomery avenue. Notwithstanding the stormy and disagreeable weather, a large gathering of sympathizing friends paid their last respects to one who, but a few days before, was about mingling with them as well as usual. W. Q. Bennett, of Honeybrook, a former pastor of Sanctuary M. E. Church, North Wales preached the funeral sermon, followed by a prayer from Rev. Robert Hetherington. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery grounds. OBITUARY William Cuthbert Hannis, a widely known lawyer, died yesterday at his home in Bala. He was eighty-one years old. Born March 4, 1835, he read law in the office of Edward Hopper and was admitted to the bar in 1858. He practiced law alone for a number of years until the firm of Hannis, Parrish and Williams was formed in 1880. Upon the death of Mr. Parrish in 1893, the present firm of Hannis, Williams and Bunting was organized. Mr. Hannis is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Hannis Perot, with whom he resided, and Miss Mary Hannis. The Judge’s action was based upon a paper which the juror’s counsel, John S. McKinlay, brought to the attention of the Court, and which was not made public until after adjournment. Judge Hare said he would excuse the old gentleman from serving, but he hardly thought excuses upon such grounds could be made in many cases. Following is the paper perused by the Court: “Having been summoned to act as a juror on the 4th of the present month, I humbly assign the following reasons why I cannot serve in such capacity with a safe conscience: 1. Civil government being the ordinance of God, His Holy Word ought to be the rule of its Constitution and administration. 2. I find that God and Christ and the Bible are all excluded from the national Constitution. 3. I believe that the juror’s office, like every other civil office, is created by that Constitution; and that I, as a juror, would be chargeable with denying Christ before men; and He says He will deny all such before His Father.– Matt. x, 33. 4. I do not believe that in a country favored with the Holy Scriptures, Jews, Mahometans, heathens, etc., should be fellow citizens with Christians, and Christians be compelled to identify with such persons. It would be tyranny to constrain them to such measures. 5. Reformed Presbyterians have dissented from the government of its origin, and for such reasons as above indicated. They approve many of the laws as equitable between man and man, but in civil relations they cannot disown God, His Son and His law, as I in this position of a juror would be obliged to do. 6. The Quaker’s conscience is respected in military affairs, and I think the same exemption should be accorded to me in civil affairs, especially when I cheerfully contribute my proportion of the common taxation for the protection of my personal liberty and security of my property. 7. Finally I find that constitution guarantees ‘liberty of conscience,’ and I only claim the just application of this provision of the fundamental law. “ROBERT ALEXANDER.” November 1 1889 Final copy 31 January, 2010
