The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project With a List of Titles Preserved on Microfilm William A. Hamill and Roberta Dell* N EWSPAPERS can be valuable sources of information for genealogists tracing Pennsylvania families and for scholars investigating the history of the commonwealth. The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project has made these important sources more widely available to researchers in all fields as well as ensured that these significant repositories of the past will survive for use by future generations of researchers. The project cataloged every identifiable newspaper collection in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and microfilmed previously unfilmed newspapers. History of the Project The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project began in 1985 as part of a national program to locate, catalog, and microfilm American newspapers. The project was the largest bibliographic and preservation project yet undertaken. The State Library of Pennsylvania, working with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Library Association, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and the University of Pittsburgh Library, developed a multi-year plan and secured initial funding from the federal National Endowment for the Humanities. Subsequent funds have *Editor's Note: William A. Hamill is co-director of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Project. He has directed both the cataloging and microfilming phases of the project at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He will continue his preservation efforts as head of the Preservation Reformatting Office at Columbia University. Roberta Dell is project co-ordinator of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Project at the ASP. She is author of The United States Against Bergdoll, an account of the Bergdoll family of Philadelphia, and of the pamphlet Tracing Your Roots. 192 The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project 193 come from the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pew Memorial Trust, and other donors. The plan for Pennsylvania divided the state into six regions for the purpose of cataloging newspapers and identified a key instituiv tion responsible for the work in each area. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the State Library, the Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Pittsburgh operated the cataloging sites. The State Library provided the overall direction, while quality control of the cataloging was the responsibility of the University of Pittsburgh. Management of the microfilming phase was assigned to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. In each of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, cataloging teams located every identifiable newspaper collection. On-site Inspection and cataloging of each prospective newspaper followed. This timeconsuming, exacting, often tedious work was followed by hours of entering bibliographic data into the On-line Computer Library Center (OCLC) system. This system is a computer database that allows information to be shared by libraries and research facilities throughout the United States and Europe. Early estimates were that about 10,000 newspaper titles have been issued in Pennsylvania since the American Weekly Mercury appeared as Pennsylvania's first newspaper on 22 December 1719. By comparison, 390 newspapers are being published in Pennsylvania today. Planning for the microfilming phase of the project began in July 1986. The microfilming preservation effort, unlike the cataloging work, was based at only one site, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which managed all of the microfilming done statewide. Because of prohibitive costs and the desire to avoid needless duplication, the project filmed only those titles not already preserved on microfilm. The microfilming team worked closely with the catalogers throughout the state to identify those titles that needed to be filmed. Several hundred work forms, generated weekly by the catalogers, were used by the microfilming team in its selection process. Newspapers proposed for filming were evaluated according to a set of criteria developed during the planning phase of the project. The interests and concerns of the communities which these newspapers represented were also addressed during the selection process. The Daily Review, a Towanda, Bradford County, paper that traces its history to 1879, was the first newspaper to be preserved on film by the project. 194 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Coincidental benefits have resulted from the project. Catalogers uncovered numerous newspapers not previously identified in any bibliography. Journalistic and publishing histories for counties where work was done were revised and updated. In many areas the project fostered improved inter-institutional relations while encouraging a renewed interest in the study of local history. The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project has created an unequaled resource for both the curious layman and professional researcher. The project has collected and stored bibliographic data from more than 1250 institutions throughout the commonwealth. The information has been incorporated into an international database that will have been expanded several thousand times. In its scope and depth, the resulting bibliography will dwarf all its predecessors. Most of the extant hard-copy newspapers will have been preserved in an estimated 10 million frames of microfilm. Reels from this film collection will be available to the public through the State Library and other participating institutions. Copies can be secured from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission for the cost of duplication. List of Titles Preserved on Microfilm Note: The following list of newspapers microfilmed by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Project is arranged by county of publication. Each entry consists of the name of the newspaper; its OCLC number; the dates of its issues that have been microfilmed by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Project in the form year:month:day [e.g., 1958:10:3 is 3 October 1958]; the number of reels of microfilm containing the run of the paper filmed; and the paper's place of publication.
