Potter, jn T lie Free African Society [FAS) was a beneficial society founded by Absalom Jones, Richard Allen, and others 12 April 1787. 1 A proposal to hold religious meetings as part of its activities was approved by the Society 16 October 1 790.2 At an FAS meeting on 28 July 1791, “a plan of church government, and articles of faith and practice, suited to the estab¬ lishment of a religious society being read, the Society concluded to unite therewith.”•' This portion of the FAS had become known as the African Church by 3 November 1792, when elders and deacons of the African Church asked members of the FAS whether they chose to remain united with the Church or whether they preferred to withdraw from the Church and separate. ' The determination of the two organizations to separate establishes 3 November 1792 as the founding date for the Church as an independent body. This founding date came just months after the famed “walkout” from St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church by Absalom Jones, Richard Allen, and other African Americans, which has been dated to late spring or early summer of 17927 Indeed, the first baptism recorded in this regisl.eslic li. These two articles correct the long-standing assumption that the walkout occurred about 1787, shortly after the founding of the Free African Society. Scant baptisms are recorded between this date and shortly after 26 March 1796, when the elders declared themselves “a corporation or body politic in law, to be known by the name of the Trustees of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas” until Easter Monday |28 March] 1796, from and after which they would Ire known as “the Minister, Church Wardens, and Vestry-men of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, in the city of Philadelphia."6 Several irregularities in the register reveal implicit details about the baptisms themselves, the method by which they were recorded, and a transitional population paving ils own way front slavery to freedom. Baptisms are generally, lint not precisely, recorded chronologically, showing that some were recorded weeks and even months after the fact. A large number of adults were baptized, a rarity in Episcopal registers. ■ After the earliest years, the name of the minister officiating at the baptisms is excluded. All or most of the baptisms during Absalom Jones' lifetime may have been conducted by him, but that is not certain. • Several different hands record the entries in this register. ■ Some baptisms were recorded twice, in some instances providing conflict¬ ing details. Several people in 1807 are specifically noted as being “baptized in church,” suggesting that at least some baptisms were conducted elsewhere. Some entries record births rather than baptisms, i bis is likely the church’s unique response to Pennsylvania’s 1780 Act for the Gradual Abolition of ■ ■ ■ ■ Slavery. Some baptismal dates precede the births of their subjects. Clerical error is evident in this and other cases of logical inconsistency. It is likely that other undetectable clerical errors also exist. • Some couples' combined given names occasionally appear with varying sur¬ names.
