An Emigrant to America in 1749 from Rhodt (Palatinate) FRIEDRICH KREBS A search in the Hofrats- and Rentkammerprotokolle of the territory of BadenDurlach for emigrants to America in 1748 reveals only one such family. In that year, Christian Carl Brand, a citizen and surgeon ("Chirurg") from Rhodt begged for manumission for himself, his wife and their eight children, as he intended to leave for "the socalled new country" (America). He was manumitted for a payment of 60 florin (gulden). Carl Christian Brand, son of the minister Johann Christian Brand from Freimersheim (Palatinate), had married 2 May 1719 at Rhodt Maria Magdalena, daughter of the cooper Johann Eberhard, also of Rhodt. Their children were all born in Rhodt and baptised there almost immediately thereafter, as follows: Philipp Michael Johann Christoph Anna Maria Johann Jacob 11-14 13-15 15-16 24-25 Barbara Jacobina Magdalena Johann Jacob (2d) Johann Daniel Sigismund Christian 13-15 4-6 22-26 29-31 July 1720 November 1722 August 1723 July 1728; died and buried at Rhodt, 3-5, October 1732 November 1732 January 1735 April 1737 May 1739 In the birth register of the first few children, Carl Christian Brand is described as a barber; in the register for the later children, as a surgeon. In reality, he seems to have been a barber who was also a surgeon, bearing in mind the overlapping functions of those two occupations at that time. Christian Carl Brand, Chirurg, landed in Philadelphia October 1749 aboard the ship Lydia, and took the oath 19 October 1749 (Strassburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, List 142 C). Johann Monb. Brandt and Johan Christen Brandt, who landed with him and were probably related to hint, cannot be identified with certainty among the abovelisted children.
