The Bressler/Pressler Family of Niederhochstadt/Pfalz and Berks County, Pennsylvania Elia cth B. Bunting. TN 1749 two Pressler families immigrated to Pennsylvania from Niederhochstadt/Pfak. The children of Harms Georg Pressler, baptized at Niederhochstadt,' came to the colonies on the Lydizs taking the Oath of Allegiance at Philadelphia on 19 October 1749.' Their Pennsylvania records are confused easily with the children of Johannes Veltin Pressler, also registered in the church records at Niederhocheride but not recorded in the Ship Lista as enumerated by Strassburger and Hinkel' lians Georg Pressler's children settled immediately in the Tulpehocken region of Berks County, Pennsylvania, later migrating north to Pine Grove Township, Buts (later Schuylkill) County. The int., of Hans Veltin Premier settled among the Mennonites in lane:aster County, Pennsylvania, remaining there until the late eighteenth centume Both fondles used many of the same given names, and it is difficult to untangle their histories. This article aims to lessen the conffision of the two emigrating Pressler families by presenting a four-generation account of the descendants of Hans Georg Pressler. Throughout, the family name is ffielled as it was found in the sources used; it was and is spelled varioffily. The B-P confusion was caused primarily by the nearlffidentiol pronunciation of those consonants in German. They are about 11 miles southwest of Speyer and the Rhine River, 30 miles southeast of Erisershutern, and 3 miles northeast of Landau. Pressleni live there today as they did when one Hans Pref., was cited in the tax records of 1590, the earliest extant. Later tax lists, from the time of the Thirty Years War, enumerated Pressler natives of Hochstadt Georg Prabler and Georg Prater der Junge, in 1619; Lorenz PreMer, 1626; and VII. Waffler. 1678. In 1668 the tax lists included the Widow of Lorenz Prelller, and Hanes, Hannes Jerg, Valtin, Hannes Stoffel, and Philipp PreBler, each named separately.' The Reformed church registers at Niederhochstadt begin in 1708 and have large gaps. Marriages are listed for 1708-1716, and then the recordjumps m 1730. There are no death records from before 1729. For Oberhochstadt, there are records of a few baptisms beginning in 1727, but records are sparse for that church community. About 1732 emigration to the coloMes began and continued apace for 20 yeam as migrants sought improved economic conditions in the New World. Hochstadtersoften settled near one another. Host Church (St. John's Reformed Church), the earliest Reformed church in Barks County, Pennsylvania, was formed by immigrants, many from Host, the dialectal name of the Hochstadt villages Fatly settlers in the Tulpehocken encouraged and welcomed those who followed from the Hochstadt village. The Bresders moved into the Host Church area of northern Her. County and Mter pushed over the Blue Mountains Mid Pine Grove Townrinp. They warranted lands in the vicinity of the Tulpehocken Trail, the scene of Indian incursions during the French and Indian War. The Weiser papers include a report of two men killed, scalped, and buried on 31 October 1755 on the Shamokin Road half a sidle from George Bressler'ssettlementnittle primary nurse material has survived from the early disrupted improvements of the Pine Grove settlements. Regional church records begin in the 17800 Possible family relationships have been inferred from old letters, family acand census reports that tally in the later generations. Where conclusions are based on circumstantial evidence, they are so identified.
