The Bells in Dauphin County Before the Revolution RAYMOND MARTIN BELL, F.A.S.G. The settlement of Dauphin (then part'of Lancaster) County, Pennsylvania, began about 1735. There is record of three Bell families before 1740: Thomas Bell (b. ca. 1710) bought land in Hanover Township 2 Oct. 1736 (Dauphin Co. Deed Book D-1, 42); killed by Indians 15 May 1757 (Pa. Archives, 1st Series, III, 158); sons: Thomas, Robert, James, Samuel (Lancaster Co. Orphans Court, 5 Mar. 1763). Walter Bell (b. ca. 1712) warranted land in Hanover Township 16 Mar. 1737 (Land Office, Harrisburg); killed by Indians about 10 Sep. 1758 (Pa. Gazette, 5 Oct. 1758); sons: Thomas, Robert, James, Walter, John, Andrew, George, Samuel (Lancaster Co. Deed Book R, 45). (Thomas and Walter Bell may have been brothers.) William Bell (b. ca. 1706), farmer, adjoinee to William Chambers' land in Paxton Township, 6 May 1738 (Land Office, Harrisburg); died 29 Oct. 1783 (Power of Attorney, Andrew Bell, Dauphin Co. Deed Book); sons: John, George, William, Thomas, Arthur, Andrew (Lancaster Co. Will Book Dl, 391). Two Brothers from Bucks County, Pennsylvania came to Dauphin County in the period 1750-1755: John Bell (b. ca. 1703); to Paxton Township about 1750 (Tax List); did not own land and died after 1777 in what is now Middle Paxton Township; sons: William, Thomas, John, ?James, Isaac, Walter (Will of son, Walter, Lancaster Co. Will Book GI, 222). William Bell (b. ca. 1717), weaver, lived in Paxton Township from about 1755 to about 1790; did not own land; died 1806 in Derry Township, Westmoreland County; sons: John, William, Arthur (Will probated 25 Jun. 1806). John and William Bell, weaver, were sons of John Bell who died 1751 in Newtown Township, Bucks County. Letters of administration were granted and the inventory were filed 8 Nov. 1751. This John, d. 1751, could have been an uncle of William, farmer, d. 1783. There were other Bells before 1775 who have not been identified: Walter Bell, letters of administration 1761, inventory £75; widow, Sarah; first taxed Paxton 1756; owned land with John Wilson, Sr. 27 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 28 George Bell, assessed 1749, 1750 in Paxton; owned land with John Smith. William Bell, widow Mary, 1761 (Roan account book, Dauphin Co. Historical Society) John Bell m. 1761 Mary Bell (Roan account book) Practically all the Bells between 18 and 53 served in the Revolution. (Needed is a good list of the early settlers in Dauphin County before 1750. Tax and land records could be a basis for this, but a lot of work is needed.) Sources used in this study have been varied: court records (estates and deeds), tax lists, land records, newspapers, pension records, Pa. Archives, church records, Roan account book. The most unusual source was in the Congressional Record, found by Walter Farwell, who has been of great help in this research. House of Representatives, Document No. 214, 1857 is a unique account of the families of John Bell (b. co 1703) and William Bell (b. ca. 1717), weaver. A number of important papers have been copied in an attempt to obtain a pension for John's grandson, James Bell. The relationship is this: William John ames (Pension R723) b. 1750 m. 'I Mary b. 1762 Ann Fleming Mary Morton b. 1768 ohn John William John (Pension 522116) Mary Bell certified the service of John Bell. Mary Morton certified the service of James Bell. THOMAS BELL OF HANOVER Thomas Bell bought a 187-acre farm in (West) Hanover Township on 2 Oct. 1736 from Samuel Wilson. His warrant was dated 10 Nov. 1743 with rent from I Mar. 1737. His name is on the 1750 tax list for Hanover. In 1756 "fled" is written after his name. Indian attacks had begun. The Pa. Archives, 1st Series, III, 158, contain the following letter: Hanover, May 15, 1757 ... this morning early they [Indians] killed Thomas Bell, an honest responsible Dweller on the Frontier, within forty yards of his own house. [Among the signers is Robert Bell.] PMHB, XXXII, 311 (1908) lists as killed and scalped in Hanover Township: 24 Nov. 1757 Robart Bell. The Pennsylvania Gazette 8 Dec. 1757 reports that on 25 November "A Son of Thomas Bell" was "killed and scalped by the Indians in Hanover Township." The Bells in Dauphin County 29 The inventory of Thomas Bells estate £252-1-0, made by John Hill and Robert Wallace) was filed in Lancaster County court 13 Dec. 1759 by the widow, Ann. The accounts were filed 2 Sep. 1760. Ann Bell relinquished her right as administratrix 10 Dec. 1762 to her son, Thomas. He filed accounts 5 Mar. 1763 listing heirs: widow, Thomas (eldest), James, Martha, Samuel, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth. An August 1772 Orphans Court record says that there was an eighth child who died under age (the above Robert). On 15 Jan. 1773 Thomas Bell sold the farm of his father. WALTER BELL OF HANOVER Walter Bell warranted a 251-acre tract in (East) Hanover Township on 16 March 1737. The survey was made 5 Nov. 1739. The land was patented by Robert Bell 20 June 1770. Thomas, the eldest son, relinquished his right to Robert (Land Office records). Walter's name is on the 1750 Hanover tax list. In 1756 "fled" is written after his name, too. The Pennsylvania Gazette, 5 Oct. 1758, tells of his death: A letter from Fort Hunter dated the 15th. ult. mentions that a few Days before, one Walter Bell, and his Son, were killed and scalped by the Indians, in Hanover Township, Lancaster County; and that another Son of said Bell's, and a Soldier were carried off by them. The inventory of Walter Bell's estate (£484-2-7) was filed at Lancaster 12 Nov. 1759 by John Crawford, James Dixon and John Hill. The accounts were filed 3 May 1760 by Elizabeth Bell (widow) and Robert Bell (son), administrators. On 2 Dec. 1769 the brothers and sisters sold to Robert Bell their interest in their father's farm. All eleven children are named (Lancaster Co. Deed Book R, 45). WILLIAM BELL, FARMER, OF PAXTON William Bell appears as an adjoinee on William Chambers' land grant of 6 May 1738 and on John Scott's grant of 8 June 1738. In 1742 William Bell applied for a warrant and reapplied 9 May 1763. The 203-acre farm was surveyed 20 May 1763 and patented 28 May 1773 (Land Office records). William signed the John Elder petition 26 Sep. 1754 and a petition about the Indians 22 July 1754. He paid his subscription to Rev. John Roan for the complete period of the account book (Dauphin Co. Historical Society, Harrisburg), from 31 Jan. 1746 to 14 Sep. 1763. His name is on all tax lists 1749-1782. In 1750 he was tax collector; in 1761 overseer of the poor. His will, written 18 Aug. 1780, was probated 22 Nov. 1783 (Lancaster Co. Will Book, DI, 391). Eleven children are named. The inventory (£27-16-8) was filed the same day by John and Thomas Forster. The six sons of William Bell sold the farm in 1786 (Dauphin Co. Deed Book, AAI3, 486). The date of William's death is given as 29 Oct. 1783 in the 20 Dec. 1784 power of attorney by Andrew Bell (Dauphin Co. Deed Book). 30 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine JOHN BELL OF BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA John Bell came from Ireland in 1719 to Bucks County. The Church Record of Neshaminy Creek and Bensalem Church lists as newcomers from Ireland 1719 Jane Bell and George Logan among others. These two were married at Abington 3 Apr. 1722 and a son, James, was baptized 15 Nov. 1724 (Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society, I (1901) 129, 130). Letters were granted in Bucks Co. 8 Nov. 1751 to William Bell of Newtown Township in the estate of John Bell of Newtown. The Inventory (£153-940) was made 29 Oct. 1751 by George Logan and Amos Strickland. William Bell and John Bell are listed, as are Sarah Chit and Ann Steward. These were likely John's children: 1. Jane Bell m. 1722 George Logan 2. John Bell b. ca. 1703 to Dauphin Co. ca. 1750 3. Ann Bell m. Charles Steward 4. Sarah Bell m. Cliff 5. William Bell b. ca. 1717 to Dauphin Co. ca. 1755 JOHN BELL OF PAXTON AND STONY CREEK John Bell (Jr.) likely moved west to Donegal Township, Lancaster County, where he warranted land 6 Oct. 1743, with rent from I Mar. 1737. This land was sold 2 Nov. 1748. In 1750 John Bell is on the Paxton Township tax list. On 26 Sep. 1754 he signed the call for John Elder. He was a Roan contributor 1758-1763. He is on the 1756 and 1758 tax lists and in 1761 was one of the administrators for the estate of Francis Baskin, who lived on the Big Island at the mouth of the Juniata River. In 1763 he likely moved to Stony Creek Valley in what is now Middle Paxton Township with his son, John. His son paid rent from I Mar. 1763 on his land. The father, John Bell, is on the tax list for Upper (now Middle) Paxton Township for 1771, 1772, 1773. The last record of John is on I1 Dec. 1777 when he testified at Fort Hunter that his son, William, was over 53. ("[John] Garber's Mill [Fort Hunter], Paxtang, 11 Dec. 1777. Wm. Bell appears and makes appear by deposition of his father that he is above the age of 53 years. Is therefore discharged." Egle, Notes and Queries) Some of the children of John Bell are named in the will of his son, Walter Bell, who died 18 Sep. 1796 (Donegal Cemetery) at Maytown, Donegal Township, Lancaster County. His will (Will Book GI, 222), probated 30 Nov. 1796, names his brother, John; James (oldest), son of his brother William; Walter (namesake), son of his brother John; Thomas, son of his brother Thomas of Bucks County. Isaac and likely James were deceased. The Bells in Dauphin County 31 WILLIAM BELL, WEAVER, OF PAXTON AND DERRY William Bell (son of John), b. ca. 1717 was married about 1749 to the widow Letitia Nelson Jolly, the daughter of Henry Nelson of Bucks County. Her Jolly children were Nelson and Alice. William Bell signed a release 5 Jan. 1753 to Thomas Nelson. In his will Thomas mentions his sister, Letitia, and her daughter, Ann Bell. About this time (ca. 1755) William Bell moved to Paxton Township, then Lancaster County, near what is now Middletown, "about three miles east of Harrisburg." William's brother, John Bell, was already living in Paxton. On 21 Sep. 1767 William Bell and wife Letitia of Paxton Township, sold Letitia's interest in her father's Bucks County estate to her son, Nelson Jolly, then of Frederick County, Virginia. (Nelson was later taxed in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., Pa. 1773-76; and Springhill Twp., now Fayette Co., Pa. 1783.) William's son, Arthur, was born near Middletown in 1761. William may have been the William Bell who signed the November 1753 petition relating to a road to Swatara Creek. William is listed as a renter ("inmate") in Paxton Township 17701772. In 1776 he lived three miles east of Harrisburg (James Bell pension R723). William's son, John, in 1776 resided in Paxton Township (John Bell pension S22116). In 1806 William Bell died in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., where his son, William, had gone in 1786. Sons, Arthur and John, were in Middle Paxton Township 1788, in Lycoming County 1790 (census) and Clearfield County 1796. William Sr. may have left Paxton before 1790. His five children are named in his will, probated 25 Jan. 1806. THE FIRST FOUR GENERATIONS THOMAS BELL b. ca. 1710, d. 15 May 1757 Hanover Twp.; m. ca. 1736 Ann ?Wilson I.
