Some Eighteenth-Century Emigrants from Hochst in dem Odenwald Jane Adams Clarke D URINE THE EIGHTEENTH century, vast numbers of people left the German-speaking areas of western Europe for eastern Europe or America. Among them were many early settlers of Pennsylvania. These hardy and courageous emigrants left for a variety of reasons: the devastation caused by a series of wars, religious conflicts, and the most prevalent, economic hardship. They came primarily from the cantons of Switzerland, from Alsace, and from the German states of the Palatinate, Baden, Wurttemberg, and Hesse. Most sailed down the Rhine to Holland and from there took ships to ports in America, the most important of which was Philadelphia. In accordance with an order made in 1727 by the governor and Provincial Council of Pennsylvania,' it was required that all continentals arriving at Philadelphia take an oath of allegiance to the British crown and a promise of fidelity to the proprietors of Pennsylvania. The ship captains were also told to keep a record of all their passengers. The oaths were administered and subscribed to before public officials at various locations but usually at the courthouse, at Second and Market streets. The ship lists and the accompanying lists of those taking the "oath" have been published in Pennsylvania German Pioneers by Ralph Beaver Strassburger and William John Hincke (hereafter referred to as 58e11).2 There is great interest in these lists, and researchers here and abroad continue to discover evidence of Pennsylvania Germans in both their old and new world homes. Trudy Schenck, a Salt Lake City genealogist, has supplied a list of emigrants found in the parish register of the Evangelical Church of Flochst (postal code 7128), located in the Kr is Erbach midway between the cities of Darmstadt and Wertheim in the present state 289 290 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine of Hesse in Germany. This part of Hesse was formerly the state of Hesse-Darmstadt. As early as A.D. 1200, Flochst im Odenwald was a center for justice and government, and today it is part of a nature park. Flochst was the site of a cloister of Fulda, affiliated with the Augustinian order. Included in the parish of Hochst are the following neighboring villages: Mtimling-Grumbach, Etzgengesass, Dusenbach, Fletschbach, Obernauses, Pfirschbach, Annelsbach, Hummelroth, Forstel, and the Schloss-Nauses. This forested area, known as the Odenwald, is bordered by the present day Rhine-Palatinate, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Bavaria. Opposite the individual baptismal records in the church book, pastors made notations that indicated the date of emigration and proposed place of settlement for many of the listed parishioners. Baptismal records for the years 1693 to 1759 were checked for this study. The earliest baptism to carry an emigration note took place in 1723. Emigrations occurred between the years 1753 and 1785. These records have been microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (hereafter LE05). 4 Also filmed by LDS, but not checked, were other Evangelical Church of Hochst records covering the years 1608 to 1875. The primary purpose of this article is to publish the names of the villagers who came to Pennsylvania. Also included are those who are shown as immigrating to Georgia, Russia, Hungary, and Nova Scotia.' In some instances, members of the same family migrated to different areas but may have joined their relatives in Pennsylvania at a later date. It is also possible that, after advising the pastor of their destination, some might have changed their minds and traveled elsewhere. S&H has been checked for all on the list, and some have been found. If a surname is found in S&H around the time of migration, it is noted. Emigration notations were not made next to the names of parishioners born before 1723, but there were probably many older members of the community who left, in particular the parents of those baptized shortly before emigration. Many of the women who appear without other family members on the list of emigrants may have been married to men whose names appear on the ship list. A study of the church's marriage register might verify this. Although the law required it, very few women and children are recorded in the ship lists. In the following list, volume and page references in 58c1-1 immediately follow the names of the ships on which these immigrants may have arrived. Emigrants from the Odenwald 291 In the one LDS film checked there were three Gemeindeverzeichnisse, censuses of all those living in the parish. These were for the years 1693, 1706, and 1741. The 1741 listing of inhabitants in the town of Hochst is appended to this article. It may help identify family groups that came to Pennsylvania. In the following listings of the emigrants, "Ship List" refers to S&H. When found, some possible clues of the presence of these immigrants in Pennsylvania is shown ("Pennsylvania Records"). In-depth research has not been done on these families, so the Pennsylvania notations might be merely coincidental. Researchers have found that people from the same area, whether they were related or neighbors, traveled together," so that a study of a ship list might lead to the discovery of the place of origin of the emigrants, especially when the home of one of the passengers is known. The ship Phoeni; John Spurrier, master, from Rotterdam landed in Philadelphia and the men on board qualified on 1 October 1754. List 222C in 58tH indicates that on this ship were "11 Roman Catholicks, 25 Menonists. Swissers. 300 souls 554 Freights. [From] Franconia, Palatinate, Zweybreck." Of these, 129 men took the oath of allegience. Nine of those on this list are men from the parish of Hochst. The remaining 171 "souls" on board no doubt included wives and children from this parish, as well as perhaps some unmarried women. It is interesting to note that some of the other passengers on board the Phoenix have been identified, and they did indeed travel in groups, albeit small ones:" Thirty-two passengers: Otto Langguth, transcr., and Don Yoder, trans. and ed., "Pennsylvania German Pioneers from the County of Wertheim," Yearbook of the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society, 12 (1947):197-258. If someone could not sign either because he could not write, or because of illness, a mark is shown. Some additional emigrants were found at that time. 4. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints microfilm 1193268 and 1193269. All names appearing after the description of a relationship or occupation are in the same category until another description is given, or another household is listed. The suffix -in attached to several of the women's surnames is the German female patronymic. See, for example, below, in household 2, Johanna Maria Greulichin, the pastor's maid. Her father's surname would have been, simply, Greulich. The person who compiled the Verztichnis used both Latin and German terms for the relationship of those in each household to the head of the family. These have not been translated in the text.
