In Memoriam Helen Hutchison Woodroofe 1922-1989 1/1T ITH deep sadness the Society reports the death of board member Helen Hutchison Woodroofe on 15 December 1989. An avid genealogist, her membership in the Society dates to 1971. Mrs. Woodroofe served as editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine from 1976 through 1982 and from mid-1985 through 1988. She served on the Board of Directors of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania from 1976 until her death. Among her published works was the excellent series "A Genealogist's Guide to Pennsylvania Records," which appeared in the Magazine from 1979 to 1987. She was also editor of several genealogical newsletters. Mrs. Woodroofe was able to document that she was a direct descendant of John Howland, who came to America from England on the Mayflower in 1620. She was a member of Pennsylvania's Society of Mayflower Descendants and the National Society of Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Helen Hutchison Woodroofe will be remembered by those who knew her for her quiet charm and her dedication as editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. She continued her duties as editor during her last illness, through the completion of Volume XXXV, to the admiration of those associated with her. The Society will miss her. She is survived by her husband Philip Benson Woodroofe; daughters Deborah Sarsgard and Natalie and Leslie Woodroofe; and four grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in her honor by The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, for acquisitions to add to the Society collections. Contributions to the fund may be sent to the Society office, 1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. , 137
