Georg Krumrein of Baltimore County, Maryland Dolores Crumrine Rutherford* UST WHEN GEORG KRUMREIN (also called Georg Groomrine in early records in America) arrived in the American colonies has not been definitely determined. It is possible that he was the "Gerg Lenhart Krurnrein" who arrived in Philadelphia on 8 September 1748 on the ship Edinburgh, James Russel, master, from Rotterdam and last from Portsmouth, England.' Palatine immigrants were required to sign an oath of allegiance to Great Britain on the same day that they anrived.2 The signature of the 1748 immigrant has been compared with the facsimile signature of the Maryland resident made by the Baltimore County, Maryland, clerk who recorded it 31 years later, and they do not appear to be the 3 same. No records for either of these men have been found for the period 1748-1766 (the latter being the date of the earliest record found for Georg Krumrein of Maryland), and only the Maryland man of that name and approximate age has been found after that time. Numerous records (deed, court, tax, probate, church, and histories) in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina have been searched for these 18 years. Over 200 early German church records in the state of Pennsylvania alone have been searched in an effort to find Georg Krumrein before he appeared in northern Maryland. Later records of Maryland and Pennsylvania have been *Editor's Note.. The author, a former teacher, received a B.S. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. An avid genealogist for 27 years, she recently donated 37 binders of family charts (with index) and research on the 11 Krumrein immigrants to the United States between 1732 and 1900 to the York County _Historical Society, York, Pa. These records have also been microfilmed by the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, and are available at branch libraries throughout the U. S. Copies of these microfilms have been placed in the library of the Carroll Co., Md., Historical Society, Westminster, Md., and in the Citizen's Libraiy, Washington, Pa. 316 Georg Krumrein 317 examined to obtain all possible information available on him and his descendants. If the Krumrein immigrant of 1748 and Georg Krumrein of Baltimore County, Maryland, can be proven to be the same person, his lineage can be traced back to Jungholzhausen, Wiirtemberg, Germany. Records of the Lutheran Church there show that Gorg Lenhardt Krummrein was born on 7 September 1719, the son of Gorg Philip Krumrein and his wife Eva Barbara (maiden name not given), and attended communion there for the last time in 1747. These church records prove the lineage of the 1748 immigrant back to Thomas Krurnmrein, parents not known, who was born in Jungholzhausen in 1592 and died there in 1675.4 The earliest record found to date for Georg Krumrein in the United States is the deed whereby he purchased the 125 acres of land upon which he lived for the rest of his life. On 12 May 1766, George Groomrine "of Baltimore County, Maryland" paid the sum of £75 currency to George Philip Minkey for two parcels of land, part of which lay on Peslar's Run, a small creek. This land was a short distance east of Manchester, Maryland, and about two miles south of the York County, Pennsylvania, border. It had been patented to the grantor's father, Peter Minkey, in two tracts: 1. 200 acres of land, called Ipstone, which was located "by the Side of a Branch which Descends into Gunpowder Falls.' Half of this tract, patented in 1756, was included in the deed to Georg Groonarine (Krumrein). 2. 25 acres of land, called Aupsto, which was described as beginning "at a Bounded White Oak standing at the West side of a branch Called Peslars Run which descends into Gunpowder falls."7 All of this land, patented in 1760, was deeded to Georg Groomrine in 1766. According to descendants who live in that area of Maryland, Georg built, a log cabin on this property. Only two church records have been found for Georg Krumrein. The first was found in the earliest known records of St. David's (Sherman's) Church, West Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania, just a few miles from the Krumrein property in Maryland. The author discovered that these records had been attributed to St. Paul's Reformed Church, Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but recognized that the persons named in them lived in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania, during the period involved, 1751--1774. The misattribution has been verified, 318 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine and the records have been relabeled correctly. Following is the St. David's Church record for Gorg Grumrein: Joh. GOrg (son of Peter Heinrichs [and wife] Eva Maria), January 5, 1768. Sponsors: Gorg Grumrein [and wife] Eva Maria.' The entry does not specify whether this is the date of birth or baptism. The second record appears in the baptisms at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. It indicates that Georg's first wife had died, and he had married for the second time. George, son of Salomon Heims and his wife Frohne was born March 29, 1775 and baptized May 21, 1775. Sponsors: Geo. Krumrein and wife Margaretha.9 These two records prove a valuable tool in the process of determining which of Georg's children were by his first marriage and which by his second marriage. Georg Krumrein died sometime between 31 March 1779, when he signed his will, and 11 May 1779, when it was entered for probate in Baltimore County, Maryland. In that document, he named his wife and six of his children but specified that he had nine children in ail.' The last three were named only in the final account made of the estate in 1800 by his eldest son, Abraham Krumrine, when the youngest of the children reached maturity. The inventory of the estate was returned to the court on 20 July 1779 by Georg's wife, Margaret, and his son, Abraham, who had been named co-executors in the It was a fair-sized estate for the times totaling £1362 10s 6d, so it appears that Georg had done well as a farmer since his arrival in America. Three accounts of the estate were subsequently made. The first, returned by Abraham only, was entered into court on 10 December 1779.12 Amounts were paid for Georg's funeral, for appraising the estate, and other miscellaneous bills and expenses. A "First Additional Account" was filed by both Abraham and Margaret on 21 December 1790 and consisted of various amounts paid to the first six children and the widow, being their portions of the estate." The final account was filed by Abraham alone on 11 June 1800 and was an accounting of monies paid to the youngest three children as their share of the estate. It is this record that gives the names of the three children not named in the will." Georg Krumrein 319 Some questions remain when these accounts are studied. First, where was Margaret when the final account was filed, and why did she not join in filing it? She had received her portion in the second accounting. Second, examination of the three accounts of the estate shows discrepancies in the amounts carried over from one accounting to the next and raises the question as to whether there are other accounts that were not recorded. The deed, probate, and orphans' court records for York and Adams counties, Pennsylvania, and for Baltimore, Carroll, and Frederick counties, Maryland, have been thoroughly searched. No other records than those given above have been found. No other record of Margaret has been found. Abraham sold the land that Georg had purchased from Peter Minkey to Anthony Minkey in 1796 and then bought it back a few months later.' He and his son, George, built a two-story stone house on that property, said to have taken ten to twenty years to complete. According to the present owners of the house, the stone was quarried nearby, hauled to the site by oxen, and fitted together with a special mortar that was still in perfect condition when renovations and additions were made to the house in the 1950s. A stone plaque built into the western gable of the structure, dated 1798 and inscribed in German, states that Abraham Krumrein, Judith his wife, and their son Georg Krumrein built the house. The children of Georg Krumrein, the immigrant, were as follows: The children of Georg and Eva Maria ) Krumrein: 1. Abraham Krumrine, b. 14 January 1752, d. 31 March 1835 of cancer of the hand. He married Judith Berger.' They had seven (and possibly eight) children," Abraham and Judith lived and died on the original Krumrein farm near Manchester, Md. Some of their descendants continued to live on this land until the early 1900s. 2. Christian Krumrine [Cnimrinel, b. ca. 1754. He died in Perry Co., Ohio, in 1821. By his three marriages he had 14 children.' He had three children by his first wife, Maria Elisabeth, daughter of Anthony and Margaret (Maurer) Souder.19 Elisabeth was buried in the cemetery of the New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Lovettsvine, Loudoun Co., Va., on 17 November 1792, aged 28 years, 2 , he had three months. By his second wife, Margaretha children. Margaretha was buried on 18 September 1793 at age 26. 20 Maria Catharina, daughter of Henry Shoup, was his third wife, and 320 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine they had eight children. Christian was taxed in Hampshire Co., (W.) Va., in 1790-1811.21 After 1812, he was taxed in Somerset, Fairfield (later Perry) Co., Ohio.22 3. John Krumrine [Crumrine, Krumrein], b. 18 October 1755; d. 18 November 1837. He married Anna Maria Salome Martin, daughter of George and Dorothea Martin.' John and his wife attended and were buried at St. David's (Sherman's) Lutheran Church, West Manheim Township, York Co., Pa., where most of their 12 children were baptized.' In 1797 he purchased 200 acres of land in Frederick (now Carroll) Co., Md.' John's will, probated in Carroll Co., Md., in 1837 names his children.' Some of his descendants still operate dairy farms on his land. 4. Barbara Krumrine m. Christian Btixler, and they had at least one child, who was baptized 5 July 1785 at St. David's (Sherman's) church.” 5. Catharine Krumrine m. Peter Zepp [Zepf] by 1788, when they were sponsors at the baptism of a child of Catharine's brother, John.' Catharine and Peter had at least two children.' 6. Susanna Krumrine, d. before 1821 in Ohio; m. Samuel Noffsinger, son of Rudolph Noffsinger [Rudy Nafftisingerl." They were married sometime before 1783, the birthdate of their eldest child.' Samuel and Susanna moved from Frederick Co., Md., to Morgan Twp., Washington (now Greene) Co., Pa., in 1790,32 where Samuel was taxed on a sawmill and they lived until 1807." By 1810 they were living in Jefferson Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio.' They had at least four children, two sons and two daughters.' One son, Samuel Noffsinger, jr., donated part of the land for the Church of the Brethren (German Baptist) in Jefferson Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio." 7. George Krumrine [Crumrinel, b. ca. 1766 in Frederick Co., Md.; d. after 1850. His son, John, stated in the 1850 census that he was 53 years old and born in Washington Co., Md." George was taxed in Morgan Twp., Greene Co., Pa., 1802-1814." He then settled in One-Leg Twp., Tuscarawas (later Harrison) Co., Ohio.' A deed dated 1819 gives his wife's name as Elizabeth,' but a history of Carroll and Harrison cos., Ohio, gives her name as Catharine.' George had three children, two sons and a daughter.' ) Krumrein: The children of Georg and Margaret ( 8. Peter Krumrine [Crumrine], b. 9 October 1774 in Maryland; d. 17 October 1860 in Darke Co., Ohio"; m. Elizabeth Ringer. He Georg Knonrein 321 lived in Morgan Twp., Greene Co., Pa., from 1801 to 1804." On 15 October 1805 he received certificate no. 1206 for land in Montgomery Co., Ohio.' He moved to Darke Co., Ohio, in 1818." Peter and his wife are buried in the West Branch (Church of the Brethren) Cemetery, German Twp., Darke Co., Ohio. They had 11 children.' 9. Michael Krumrine [Crumrine], probably b. ca. 1778-79 in Maryland; d. 1 March 1825 in Darke Co., Ohio's; m. Susanna, daughter of John and Anne Niswanger [Nyswaner]." Michael and Susanna lived in Greene Co., Pa., in 1801 and 1806-1808.5' In 1821 he purchased 160 acres of land in Darke Co., Ohio, where he lived until his death.' He and Susanna had nine children, all named in his will.' A letter from Aaron R. Crumrine of Kush, Jackson County, Alabama, dated 16 March 1910, addressed to his son, Charles Edwin Crumrine of Los Angeles, California, included the following information on the family: My grandfather's name was Peter Crumrine he had one Brother his name was Mikel Crumrine they settled cose to gather in Ohio . he had one sister that lived about 40 miles from him for forty years and he did not know it ...they never knewd how many ther was of them ther Father and Mother died and they were bound out when they small and get parted from each other and neithe one of them knew if there was any mor of them." The letter also stated that the sister mentioned above learned where Peter lived and visited him. The sister was Susanna (Krumrine) Noffsinger of Montgomery County, Ohio. It seems probable that Georg Krumrein's second wife, Margaret[ha], adhered to the German Baptist (Brethren) faith since her children kept that faith, and all of the children of the first marriage except Susanna continued to attend the Lutheran or Reformed church. Susanna, who was one of the younger children of the first marriage, may have been closer to her half-brothers. Notes I.
