FROM OLD PHILADELPHIA GRAVEYARDS. The Philadelphia City Directory for 1796 lists 13 sects, in the old city and suburbs, with 28 places of worship. By the end of 15 years, the number of places of worship had increased 54%; in 25 years, 86%. In the year 1831, with a score of sects established, there were 84 congrega¬ tions— an increase of 200% in 35 years. At the same time, 67 sectarian burying-grounds found place on the map. The reasons for this unusual multiplication of burial-places were, first, the variety of nationalities and creeds which had found asylum in Pennsylvania; second, the remarkable growth of the Province; and, third, the schisms or separations due to differences over creed, language, color, or what-not. Besides the numerous English-speaking sects, there were Swedish Lutherans, German Lutherans and Reformed, German Roman Catholics and Moravians. From the German Lutherans, there split off the English Lutherans; from the Reformed, the Reformed Dutch; from the Presbyterians, the Independents; from the Friends, the Free Quakers; from the Methodists, the African Methodists; and so on. And, according to prevailing custom, each sect must have its own place of sepulture. In some places, as on 16th street, from Fairmount avenue to Wallace street; on Cherry street, west of 17th; and on 13th street, north of Pine, two or three burying-grounds, of different denominations, were found side by side. Could this practice have been carried one step farther; eould the various sects have united in purchasing, in the suburbs, a large tract in which each could have had its separate burial plot (as, in effect, many finally did, in the larger cemeteries), they might have presented an united front against encroachment, and perhaps history would not now have to record the wholesale disturbance of the dead, and the loss of their priceless memorials. But apparently, such a plan was never broached; or, if it were, was deemed impracticable. The number of sectarian burying-grounds probably reached its peak in the decade 1830-40, when the unfortunate results of such a system began to become apparent. The growth of the city was such that, by the time more burial space was needed, all adjoining land had been built upon, and additional ground had to be secured at a distance. Some churches had, at various times, as many as three burying-grounds, and St. George's had three in use at once. Then, the steady advance of the business district, crowding out the residences, cause the old congre¬ gations to diminish. Some saved themselves by erecting new buildings elsewhere, or by uniting with one another ; but one by one, the old build¬ ings were abandoned, and with them, the already crowded graveyards, which it now became necessary to remove. Perhaps the ousting of the Reformed congregation from Franklin Square, in 1836, and the grading over of its burying-ground there, gave the initial impetus to this move- (21) 22 Fragments from Old Philadelphia Graveyards. ment. At any rate, the ’40 ’s, ’50 ’s and ’60 ’a saw the steady uprooting of many well-kno-wn burying-grounds, and the removal of their dead to the larger grounds of cemetery companies. Nor did the movement end with that period; on the contrary, it continues unabated, and more recent years have witnessed, not only the removal of more churchyards, but the wholesale dismantling of such large cemeteries as Philadelphia (of Passyunk), Philanthropic and Machpelah, while the forlorn condition of others presages their early obliteration. Removals have been in varying degree, from a row or two of graves, encroached upon by the widening of a street or the enlargement of a church building, to an entire churchyard; but generally it is a muchdiminished burying-ground that is represented by the tombstones re¬ erected in the new plot, the difference being due to scattering removals to other places of interment made by owners of family lots. Some buryinggrounds have been removed in instalments, as occasion required, and some have been removed en masse several times. Some of the dead of the First Reformed Church have, at different times, rested in three or four widely separated places. Herewith are presented copies of the inscriptions as they are found today in some of these fragments of old Philadelphia burying-grounds. CHAS. R. BARKER.
