Pennsylvania-North Carolina Migrations: AS IDENTIFIED IN THE FIRST TEN DEED BOOKS OF ROWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA Jo White Linn, C.G. Migrations cause perplexing problems for the genealogist working either forward or backward. While the major migration trails may be known, there are still problems of identifying a particular location. As this article reveals, there are many deeds recorded in Rowan County which document Pennsylvania migrations; there are many more where the Pennsylvania origins are not stated, but which can be proved by other sources. The following abstracts of Rowan County deeds retain all references to Pennsylvania stated in the deeds themselves; all other references to locations not otherwise designated are Rowan County, North Carolina. The list is exhaustive, all deeds in the first ten volumes of Rowan County deed book having been searched. Personal names and place names are presented here as they appear in the original with the exception of those in brackets. The numbers on the left margin indicate the Rowan County deed book and page number where the deed is recorded. Rowan County was formed in 1753 from Anson County, North Carolina. It covered a vast area and was eventually sub-divided into twenty-six present day North Carolina counties and the entire state of Tennessee. Its county seat, Salisbury, was for more than two decades the farthest west county seat in the colonies. In 1771 Surry County was created from Rowan; in 1777, Burke. County was created from Rowan; in 1778 , Wilkes County was created from Rowan; subsequent sub-divisions fall outside the time-frame of this article. The Piedmont area of North Carolina, of course, was largely settled by Americans whose first home had been Pennsylvania. Some of these settlers had spent a few years or even a generation in Virginia or elsewhere, but most came directly from Pennsylvania. Quaker, ScotsIrish and German were the three primary groups which came along the Great Wagon Road.
