BASTARDY CHARGES AND MARRIAGES IN THE DOCKET OF THOMAS CHEYNEY, CHESTER COUNTY, 1 779-1806 TPeace.1 here are two docket books for Thomas Cheyney, Justice of the A small book, 7 inches wide by 9 inches tall, is just loose sheets, unnumbered, stitched together, covering 1779-1780. Tiny page numbers in pencil have been added to the lower right-hand corner of the right page. The sheets of the second, 19 inches wide by 16 inches tall, have been silked and bound. The pencil numbering in the larger volume is A-C for the first three sheets, then runs from I to 1 IS, covering 17801806. Interspersed among the typical legal matters are several items of a genealogical nature, such as bastardy statements and marriages. Most of the marriages are in the standard language of Quaker marriage certifi¬ cates, including the names of witnesses, although the marriage was per¬ formed before a Justice of the Peace, which would have been contrary to discipline. Apparently, because many of the parties involved were from a Quaker background, this was their understanding of what a marriage cer¬ tificate should say. THOMAS CHKYNEY’S DOCKLIBOOK#!
