County of Philadelphia: School Children Enumerations Compiled by GSP volunteers TN 1683 THE SECOND COLONIAL ASSEMBLY of Pennsylvania in- Xstituted a governmental structure stating, in part, that education should be available to all, rich or poor. Subsequent legislation in 1790 and 1809 imposed tighter regulations, but enforcement was difficult if not impossible. By 1850, however, most Pennsylvania counties accepted tax-subsidized education for all children. For additional historical de¬ tails about the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania legislation that led to compilation of enumeration lists of poor children educated at county expense, and ultimately to the public school system as we know it today, consult PGM 39, no. 4 (Fall/Winter 1996): 391-92, or PGM 40, no. 1 (Spring/Summer 1997): 33-34. The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania initiated publication of Philadelphia County school children enumeration lists in PGM 39, no. 4 (Fall/Winter 1996): 391-408. The initial lists, covering Blockley, Kingsessing, Moyamensing, Passyunk, and Southwark West (1811-1812) were continued (1813-1815) in PGM 40, no. 1 (Spring/Summer 1997): 33-55, and completed (1816) in PGM 40, no. 2 (Fall/Winter 1997): 133-146; Germantown, Bristol, Roxborough, Byberry, Moreland, Ox¬ ford, and Lower Dublin (1811-1814) in PGM 40, no. 3. The school children enumeration lists continue in the current issue with records for Germantown, Bristol, Roxborough, Byberry, More¬ land, Oxford, and Lower Dublin (1815-1816). With the exception of the “By Whom Taught” column for [1815] Oxford (original records listed the teacher’s name once only and included a bracket to span the range of students taught), the infor¬ mation provided here is reproduced verbatim, with no attempt to correct apparent errors or inconsistencies. Blank spaces indicate missing information. It should be noted that enumerations for some areas in certain years are missing, incomplete, or unidentified. Researchers are reminded to check the original source to verify data. 361 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 362 (continued from Vol. XL, no. 3 [Spring/Summer 1998]: 262) [1815] GERMANTOWN Names of Parents, etc. Names of Children Widow Axe Charles Adams Frederick Axe Hester Adams Hannah Adams Jacob Buddy Daniel Buddy Benjamin Blake Samuel Blake Mary Ditman George Ditman Ann Frailey Lewis Frailey Michael Blake Widow Ditman John Frailey Sarah File Widow Guyer Widow Howser James Hamilton Widow Himmelright Rebecca Hang John Hornbach Philip Knapp Widow Claus Solomon Lightcap William Mitchell Widow Metsker John McBride Robert McCorkell Widow Ottinger Widow Ployd John Peasley Jacob Pennick Age By Whom Taught 9 10 8 11 9 7 10 8 10 8 Catharine File William Guyer Sarah Howser Hester Howser Sarah Hamilton 8 10 11 10 David Himmelright William Hang Daniel Hornbach Elizabeth Knapp Susan Knapp George Lower George Lightcap Henry Lightcap Hannah Mitchell 8 8 William Mitchell Samuel Metsker John McBride Mary McCorkell Charles Ottinger Matthias Ployd Ruth Peasley Joseph Peasley Caroline Pennick 10 11 8 10 8 10 8 10 8 10 10 11 10 9 10 7 8 County of Philadelphia: School Children Enumerations 363 [1815] GERMANTOWN (continued) Names of Parents, etc. Names of Children Eleanor Robinson John Reeker Age By Whom Taught John Robinson Sarah Reeker Catharine Reeker William Strunk Jacob Strunk Hannah Strunk John Sheetz Jacob Sheetz Sebastian Hefferfinger Lawrence Frank Juliann Frank Widow Topham Maryann Topham Widow Uber Elizabeth Uber No additional records for Germantown 9 11 8 11 8 8 11 9 7 8 [1815] BRISTOL Charles Glackins Catharine Glackins William Glackins Isaac Glackins Sarah Glackins No additional records for Bristol 10 8 8 6 [1815] ROXBOROUGH Ganor Ashton Juliann Coucher George Coucher William Ingram Joseph Ingram Elizabeth Ozeas Eliza Ozeas Benjamin Such Jane Such Susannah Tibbon Elizabeth Tibbon William Wagner Sarah Wagner George Wagner Barnabas Coulston Jane Coulston No additional records for Roxborough William Ashton Daniel Coucher 8 9 8 9 6 7 8 9 5 10 364 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine [1815] BYBERRY Names of Parents, etc, Names of Children Venus Johnson, blk Edward McKeever Samuel Johnson John Parker Joseph Robinson Samuel Severn Robert Robinson Mary Severn Hazel Severn Mary Worrell Benjamin Yates Rebecca Yates James Yates 5 9 Rogers McKeever Mary McKeever John Parker, blk Matthew Worrell Age By Whom Taught 7 6 8 10 8 7 11 7 No additional records for Byberry [1815] MORELAND Thomas Hooven John Hooven Samuel Hooven Christian Kuentz Jacob Kuentz Leonard Ott Edward Ott Elizabeth Walton Thomas Huling Widow Leedom Ann Leedom No additional records for Moreland 10 9 6 7 10 old 8 [1815] OXFORD Jacob Faunce John Hart Cornelius Lennau Charles McVaugh William Rogers Eve Rogers John Smith Stephen Faunce William Hart Daniel Lennau William Lennau Ann McVaugh Hannah Rogers John Rogers Benjamin Rogers William Rogers Jane Smith 9 8 10 8 6 9 7 9 7 7 Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Thomas Shallcross Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow Samuel Morrow County of Philadelphia: School Children Enumerations 365 [1815] OXFORD (continued) Names of Parents, etc. Names of Children William Stull Robert Shaw Robert Shaw Robert Walton Josiah Walton No additional records for Oxford Jeremiah Stull Age By Whom Taught 10 8 6 [1815] LOWER DUBLIN Thomas Evans Elizabeth Evans 10 Nancy George Fisher Rowland Hughs Thomas Hamilton William Krewson Cadwallader Llewellen Joseph Enoch Christian Pitt Charles Shuster David Thomas Isaac Taylor James Wallace James Gibeson Daniel Evans Samuel Evans Yardley Fisher Jesse Fisher Henry Fisher John Hughs Mary Hughs William Hughs Catharine Hamilton Mary Hamilton Susannah Hamilton Jillyer Krewson Alice Llewellin Sarah O Neal Sarah Pitt Elizabeth Pitt John Pitt William Shuster Margaret Shuster M.
