Adam Schaefer's Militia Discharge N ABSTRACT of the pension application of Adam Schaefer of Centre A County was published in 1970 in the No. 3 issue of Volume XXVI of this Magazine on pages 159-161. Although Schaefer claimed in his application that his militia discharge was enclosed with his application papers, it was not included in the transcript made by Dr- W. F. Wagner from which the abstract of the application papers was made for this Magazine. However, when Mr. David L. Greene of 36 School Street, Lincoln, Maine, 04457, obtained Xerox copies of his ancestor Schaefer's pension application papers from the National Archives, he received a xerox of the discharge, which he has transcribed as follows: March the 10th 1777 The, Bearer Hereof; Luit. Adam Sheafer of Capt. Benjamin Wiser's Company of Militia of Northumberland County, Under my Command has Behaved him Self Well, & Served his time & term Honestly and faithfully as a good faithful! Soldier out to do, is Hereby Discharged and Permitted to Return home again, given at Headquarters at Princetown Per me To any Superior Officer or Whome they belong to /s/ Abraham Latcha Ma' In addition to the discharge, Mr. Greene also received a copy of a document, dated 24 November 1852, from Centre County, on behalf of "Michael Shafer, son and heir of Adam Shafer, late a resident of Miles Township in said County," appointing 0. S. H. Peck(?) of Washington City, his "true and lawful Attorney, to prosecute the claim of Adam Shafer for any amount of Revolutionary Pension, or increase of Pension that may be due.". Regrettably the documents sent Mr. Greene did not include any indication of the result of this renewed effort to obtain a pension. Nevertheless, we are grateful to Mr. Greene for supplying this additional information about Adam Schaefer, and trust Schaefer descendants will take due notice of it. Correction Mr. Greene has also pointed out a typographical error in the same No. 3 issue of Volume XXVI of this Magazine. On page 171, Note 4, "Anne Spence's husband" should read "Anne Spruce's husband." It is gratifying to know that some of our subscribers, at least, read even the fine print! 35
