German Emigrants from Palatinate Parishes FIUTZ BRATJN AND FRIEDRICH KRF-IIS * From the Translation by DON YODER ATA on the emigrants listed below first appeared in the study "Amerika-Auszvanderer des 18. Jahrhunderts aus siidpfiilzischen Gemeinden" in the supplement entitled Mitteilungen rue 1Vanderungsgeschichte der Pflilzer, edited by Dr. Fritz Braun, of the periodical Pf zische Familien- und Wappenkunde, Volume II, Nos. 5 and 6 (1956).' The study was translated from the German by Dr. Don Yoder and published in the 1957 Spring issue of The Pennsylvania Dutchman as "Pennsylvania Dutch Pioneers from South Palatine Parishes." Since that translation is not readily available for all researchers, Dr. Yoder has given permission for the present reprinting. These emigrants all came from villages in the southern part of the Palatinate, generally in the area west of the Rhine River between Speyer on the north and Karlsruhe to the south. The sources of the references to their emigration are found in the Lutheran church register of Freimersheim (southwest of Speyer), Freisbach and Gommersheim (both west of Speyer), Minfeld (northwest of Karlsruhe), and Weingarten (northeast of Karlsruhe) ; from the Reformed church registers of Zeiskam and Oberlustadt (both northwest of Germersheim), that for Ober-. lustadt serving also for nearby Niederlustadt; from documents in the Ausfautheiakten Germersheim, in the Electoral Palatine Archives (Akten Kurpfalz) for Westheim, and in the Archives of the Johannite Order in the Palatine State Archives in Speyer, as well as in the Heimatstelle Pfalz at Kaiserlautern. In the following list the basic emigration data found in these documents and in the various church registers has been placed within quotaDr. Fritz Braun. Director of the government-sponsored organization, Heimatstelle Pfalz (the Home Quarters of the Palatinate District) at Kaiserslautern, and Da Friedrkh Krebs, Archiv-assessor at the Pfilzisches Landeskirchenareh'v (the Archives of the State Church of the Palatinate) at Speyer, both in West Germany, are Corresponding Members of the Genealogical Sociery. Dr. Yoder, former Associate &hoar of The Penmylvania Dutchman, currently is Editor of Permylvania Po:aft . This periodical. published at Ludwigshafen, is sponsored by the Heirnaatelle Pfalz. 'Pastor Dr. /Caul furnished the emigration date Irons the Lutheran church register of Gommenheim. 246 German Emigrants from Palatinate Parishes 247 tion marks; it is supplemented, as far as possible, by the birth or baptismal and marriage dates of the emigrants, and parents', wives' and children's names and dates when found in the various church registers. In about two-thirds of the cases, the emigrants' names appear in the published ship-lists of William J. Hinke and Ralph Beaver Strassburger's Pennsylvania German Pioneers (Norristown, 1934), cited hereinafter as HS, V The material on the Bauersachs family from Weingarten, slightly edited in this present reprint, is a good example of what can be done through the cooperation of Pennsylvania and Palatine genealogists. In general, however, the question of where these emigrants settled in America has been left open pending further research.' For other lists of German emigrants, the reader is directed to those enumerated in the preceding article in this issue by Milton Rubincam, to Friedrich Krebs' "Annotations to Strassburger and Hinke's Pennsylvania German Pioneers," in Volume XXI, No. 3 issue (1960), 235, of this Magazine, and to his "Emigrants to America from the Duchy of Zweibriicken," in Volume XXIII, No. 4 issue (1964), 255, of this Magazine. — Editor. "Whereas Barbara Horter, widow and relict of Georg Horter, deceased citizen and town-councillor at Oberlustadt, went from here about one year ago to the so-called New England with her son Velten Horter, also a son of hers named Georg Jacob Horter 5 had gone there several years previously, so then both brothers and sisters and in-laws of hers still residing here, namely Jacob Wunder and his wife Anna Maria, and Jacob Sager, sent a manuscript letter asking her therein, since one of them had the desire to go to the above-mentioned New Land, if he should sell or convert into money the inheritance still coming to her here and bring it to her. Now since Jakob Wunder and his wife Anna Maria have likewise resolved to go to their respective mother and brothers and sisters and therefore have petitioned for permission to convert into cash the properties of their in-. laws still coming to them and take them to them," a complete inventory of the properties of Georg Jakob and Velten Horter was drawn up, and the results of the sale given to the brother-in-law, Jacob Wunder, who emigrated in 1765. In 1790, Jacob Har-. ter was listed as the head of a household in which were three males over 16 years of age, and two females. Valentbae was 003 listed. From document dated 3 October 1765. She must therefore have emigrated about 1744. GEORG ADAM TEIS, arrived at Philadelphia with Georg Adam Haushalter on the Ship Polly, 24 August 1765; his name is given on the shiplist immediately after Haushalter's. Perhaps he is identical with the Jorg Adam Theiss, born at Ober- or Niederlustadt, 9 February 1739, son of Andreas Theiss and wife Magadalena. JOHANN JAKOB WUNDER, born at Oberlustadt, 13 January 1727, son of Sebastian Wunder and wife Anna Maria; married ANNA MARIA HORTER, born at Oberlustadt, 21 July 1729, daughter of Georg Horter and wife Anna Barbara, for whom see above. This is probably the Frieterig Dot who arrived at Philadelphia, on the Ship Lydia and qualified 9 October 1749: HS I, 422. He eventually settled in Plymouth Township, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County, where he was a tavern keeper. He d. tome 1 July 1795, aged 71 years, and ha wife Elizabeth, 22 January 1820, aged 80 years, 3 months, 25 days. Both am buried at Boehrds Reformed Church, Whitpain Township, Montgomery County. 'Valentine Wunder and ha wife are buried in the cemetery of the Market Square Presbyterian (formerly the Germantown Reformed) Church with tombstones: Valentine Wunder, b. 1 April 1778; d. 20 November 1828; Magdalena, wife of Valentine, b. 25 April 1751; d. 25 July 1844. They lived in Germantown Township where he was a butcher. The father Johann Jacob Wunder was living "near Germmtown" in 1772, according to an advertisement in Henry Miller's Sisatsbote for 11 February 1772. The indication of birthplace is not clear, since the Oberlustadt register sea-ves for both placer. A Christian Wunder was assessed in Manheim Township, York County, 1779 through 1783, according to Pennsylvania Archives, led Series, XXI, 26, 216, 402, 792. The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 258 Weingarten PAUL BAUERSACHS, born at Weingarten, 29 September 1744, son of Johann David Bauersachs and wife Anna Maria Damian of Bobingen; "settled at Freisbach, and from there went to America." From document dated 5 August 1784. Paulus Bauessachs arrived at Philadelphia, 4 December 1771, on the Ship Betsey: HS, I, 738. The name Bauersachs (in the Lutheran church register of Weingarten spelled Beuersax) in the United States is spelled Bowersox. Paul Bowersox died 8 March 1806, in Center Township, now Snyder County, Pa., and is buried at the Hassinger Church Cemetery near Middleburg in Snyder County. See also above Johann Jost Kern of Freisbach. According to family tradition in Pennsylvania, Paul Bowersox had come to America before 1771, returned to Germany on a visit, and then came back to Pennsylvania in 1771. He had three sons and three daughters. The eldest son, Georg Adam Bowersox, was the ancestor of the Reverend George E. Bowersox, of McSherrytown, Pa. The three sons, all born in Snyder County, are listed in Charles A. Fisher, Early Pennsylvania Births, as: 1. George Adam Bowersox, b. 1 April 1774; m. 1776, Maria Steinbruch. 2. Benjamin Bowersox, b. 15 September 1780. 3. Jacob Bowersox, b. 19 October 1785. See also Aaron Kern Gift, "The Messinger Church," in The Pennsylvania German, noted above. HANS NICKEL ("NICHEL") BAUERSACHS arrived at Philadelphia, 15 August 1750, on the Ship Royal Union: HS, I, 432. It is probable that this emigrant belongs to the same family as the above Paul Bauersachs. However, in the church register of Weingarten there is no reference to the emigration of Hans Nickel Bauersachs, nor is his baptism recorded there. Information from the Reverend Bowersox of McSherrytown, Pa., cleared up the mystery. According to an entry in the register of the Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church" [at Upper Salford Township, now Montgomery County, Pa.], Johann Nicol Bauersax, born 14 November 1702, baptized 15 November at Memmelsdorf, a tailor by trade, was the son of Johann "As taken from the translated and published record in The Perkiomen Region, Volume I, No. 1 (December 1521), rather than from the account given by the Rev. Bowman. His account stated that the Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg made the entry, but it was Lucas Reuss who opened the church books in 1755. German Emigrants from Palatinate Parishes 259 Bauersacks, a butcher, and his wife Elisabetha "in Itzgrund." According to the same entry, in 1727 he went to "Nieder Lustadt," three hours above Speier, where in 1727 he married Maria Elisabeth, daughter of Velten Goth ' and wife Eva Elisabetha. In 1750, he and his wife and two children emigrated to America. Children born before the emigration [as listed in the Goshenhoppen register]: 1. Johann Valentin Bauersax, b. 7 July 1741; confirmed at Old Goshenhoppen 15 March 1761; [m. 27 December 1764, Barbara Schlonecker.] 2 2. Georg Adam Bauersax, b. 26 February 1744; confirmed at Old Goshenhoppen, 15 March 1761; [m. Magdalena Rauermaner (Routzan).] sa 3. Elisabetha Bauersax, dec'd by 1750. 4. Maria Barbara Bauersax, dec'd by 1750. The birthdates of all the children listed in the above entry are found in the register of the Reformed church at Oberlustadt, which served both Ober- and Niederlustadt: I. Maria Elisabeth Bauersachs, b. 9 April 1735. 2. Maria Barbara Bauersachs, b. 3 August 1738; d. 9 June 1740. 3. Johann Valentin Bauersachs, b. 7 July 1741. 4. Jorg Adam Bauersachs, b 26 February 1744. Both of the above sons served in the Revolutionary War, and after their release from service settled in Frederick County, Md. References to both families appear in the records of St. David's Lutheran Church near Hanover, Pa., on the Maryland border. The family of Georg Adam Bowersox is later named in the records of St. Mary's Lutheran Church, Silver Run, Md., where members of that family are buried. His own gravestone and that of his wife and son Christian are at Uniontown, Md. Georg Adam Bowersox took the oath of citizenship to Maryland on 19 June 1779. An inquiry to Memmelsdorf, Oberfranken, revealed that the name Bauersachs never appeared in the records there. But in Memmelsdorf near Erben in Unterfranken," the relationship was proved through the researches of Pastor Loblein, from the Lutheran church register at that place: Johann (Hans) Bauersachs, widower, married at Memmelsdorf, 22 November 1698, Anna Elisabeth Kohler of Memmelsdorf. Their children, b. at Memmelsdorf, included: "In the original German article this name is given as Gothe. "This marriage is entered in the register of the New Hanover Lutheran Church. The bride's surname was not included in the Rev. Bowersox's account. "This marriage, apparently supplied by die Rev. Bowersos, is not in the published Goshenhoppen register. "The two Menunelsdorfs lie between Coburg and Bamberg on the east and west sides of the Itz River. 260 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 1. Johann. Bauersachs, bapc. 3 August 1699. 2. Johann Nikolaus, bapt. 3 November 1700. The difference between the birth and baptismal dates of Johann Nikolaus Bauersach in the Mernmelsdorf and Goshenhoppen entries is striking. But it must be realized that the entry in Goshenhoppen was not made until after 1750. In the Memmelsdorf register there is no other entry to be found for the period concerned. The word "Itzgrund" in the Goshenhoppen register following the Christian name of Johann Nikolaus's mother is undoubtedly a place name; the Itz, coming from Coburg, flows through the Memmelsdorf area and into the Main River. Through the entry in the Old Goshenhoppen Church register we have learned where the Bauersachs family originated, and that Johann Nickel Bauersachs emigrated in 1750 from Niederlustadt to Pennsylvania. Johannes Bauersachs, baptized at Memmelsdorf, 3 August 1699, must likewise have settled in the Palatinate, for in the Lutheran register of Weingarten is recorded his marriage on 9 June 1716, to Anna Maria Hubin, native of Offenbach, single, and on 27 November 1718, the birth of their son Hans David Bauersachs who married 1st, at Weingarten, 9 February 1740, Anna Maria Damian from Biibingen, and after her death married 2nd, at Weingarten, 25 January 1757, Anna Maria Luber (Luwer) from Oberiustadt.. Johannes Bauersachs was therefore the grandfather of the emigrant Paul Bauersachs, noted previously, and a brother of the emigrant Johan Nikolaus Bauersachs. JOHANN PETER BRUNNEMER, born at Weingarten, 28 April 1726, son of Johannes Brunnemer and wife Anna Margaretha; had "already gone away to Pennsylvania 18 years ago, without receiving permission" ("bereits vor 18 J. in Pensilvanien ohne vorherige Erlaubnis abgezogen"). From a document dated 7 March 1767. According to a power of attorney drawn up Pi Augusta County, Va., 15 August 1766, Johann Peter Brunnemer was residing there at that time. THEOBALD KLINGLER, born about 1714, married at Weingarten, 26 November 1737, MARIA CATHARINA GOLBERT, daughter of the citizen and town-councillor Henrich Gelberth (Gilbert) at Freimersheim, who died about 1717, and his wife Anna Rosina Geiss. According to a transfer of property of the widow Anna Rosina Geiss, dated 19 April 1746, he "went to the New Land seven years ago." Philipp Jacob Geiss settled in Zeiskam after his marriage, where he was a farrier and citizen. In an official document dated 4 February 1757, it is said of Helen Schmitt, nee Guth, that she "went away to America about 6 years ago." Lorentz Schmitt's wife appears as both Maria Magdalena and as Maria Helena. In the baptismal register of Zeiskam is found only the baptism of Maria Magdalena. At the marriage entry, "Magdalena" is stricken out and "Helena" written above. At the entry of the birth of the first child, the mother appears as "Maria Magdalena," at the second child's birth as "Maria Helena." Children, b. at Zeiskam: 1. Johann Jacob Schmitt, b. 23 March 1749, has gone to the New Land." 2. Philipp Peter Schmitt, b. 22 September 1750.
