Baldwin, III. Chairman Mrs. Winfield S. Weer Conrad Wilson Helen Hutchison Woodroofe Editor Dr. Don Yoder 11) by The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, 1300 Locust St, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Published twice a year. Contributors Wilhelm Niepoth was born in 1883 in Rheydt-Geneiken, Germany, where his father served as headmaster of a school. His paternal family came from Upper Hesse and had already produced many schoolmasters before they got to the lower Rhineland. Wilhelm Niepoth followed the family tradition and became a teacher. After his retirement as a headmaster, he returned to the lower Rhine, his beloved research area, to settle in Krefeld. As a young teacher he had taken an active part in research of the local history of this area, including the genealogies of local families. Attracted to the Mennonite research, he made it his specialty, which he pursued with great success. His research showed evidence of unusually painstaking work. Much of his work was published in the German publication Die Heimat. Professor Niepoth died in 1960. John Brockie Lukens, the translator of Wilhelm Niepoth's article, "The Ancestry of the Thirteen Krefeld Emigrants of 1683", is a direct descendant of Johann Lucken, one of the Thirteen. Mr. Lukens lives in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. He is the Regional Architect of the Mid-Atlantic Region, National Park Service. He attributes his interest in the German language to his German studies at Episcopal Academy, and to Professor Harry W. Pfund, whose intermediate German course he enjoyed as a student at Haverford College. Professor Pfund agreed to review the draft of this article, and supplied many helpful notations now incorporated in this translation. Dorothee Hughes Carousso, the author of "What Is A Document?" is a nationally known genealogist, and a Vice-President of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, as well as being a Fellow of the society. As a member of the Board for Certification of Genealogists; a lecturer at the National Institute of Genealogical Research; and an instructor in a twosemester course in Genealogical Methods, she is well qualified to define "a document." Her published work is extensive, including articles in The National Genealogical Journal, The New York Historical Ce Biographical Record, The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, The Maryland-Delaware Genealogist, The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. Robert LeConte Halberstadt is a member of the Board of Directors of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and chairman of the Committee of Hereditary and Patriotic Societies. His article, "So You Are Being Proposed for Membership in a Hereditary Society", reflects his wide experience with hereditary and patriotic societies. He is past Governor of The Colonial Society of Pennsylvania; a Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, and Chairman of its Membership Committee; a member of the Board of Direction of the Society of the War of 1812; Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of the Loyal Legion of the United States; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A registered professional engineer, he is retired from the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania, and the United States Navy with the rank of Captain.
