ELDRED FIRST man to operate a store and an inn at the Outlet in .Orange County, New York, was ELISHA ELDRED, of New England;1 whose children would become early settlers of Wayne and Pike Counties, Pennsylvania. Little is known of his origins, except that he was born in the early 1750s in New England, and settled, about the time of the American Revolution, at the Outlet, in the Precinct of Goshen, New York, which became the Town of Minisink on 7 March 1788. The area is known today as the village of Denton, and is now in the Town of Wawayanda. Elisha's store and inn were located near the Outlet Bridge that crossed the Wallkill River on the road from Goshen to the Delaware River. During the Revolution, Elisha Eldred served in the Goshen, or Third Regiment of the Orange County Militia, commanded by Colonel William Allison? Samuel W. Eager, An Outline History of Orange County..., (Newburgh, N. Y., 1846/7), 412. .James A. Roberts, comp., Now York in the Revolution as Colony and State, (Albany, 1898), 225. 191 192 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Sometime before 1776, he married, MARY HULZE,3 or HULSE, whose parentage is unknown; she may have been related to Richard, James, Elisha and Jacob Hulse, who were residents of the Precinct of Goshen at that time. After the war Elisha became the owner of several properties in the Town of Minisink, and in May 1804, at a land sale by the Sheriff of Wayne County, he purchased 25 tracts of land, totaling over 10,000 acres.4 He still owned 13 of these tracts in October 1804, when he willed them to his son, Everett. In Minisink he was elected to several positions in the town government; fence viewer in 1789, tax collector in 1793, roadmaster of district 2, in 1792, 1795, 1796.° This example of public service would be followed by his sons, who would be active in their local, county and state governments. Elisha Eldred, died at the Outlet, 18 October 1804, at the age of fifty-two or fifty-four,6 and was buried on his farm, in a small family cemetery, now located in a field behind the Denton Presbyterian Church. Although the inscription on his tombstone was copied in the 1930s, the stone is now missing, and the exact location of his grave is unknown. He executed his will on the day of his death; probate was made, 25 October 1804.1 In his will he named his wife, Mary, and his son, James, as administrators of his estate; made bequests to his sons, Everett and Samuel; and made provision for the support of his unmarried children, without naming them. Mary Hulze Eldred, married, 26 October 1806, her second husband, JOHN FORGESON, a widower, of the Town of Minisink .4 He was born, 11 July 1748, and died, 18 October 1812. After his death, his widow went to live with her son, James Eldred, at Halfway Brook, Sullivan County, New York; where she died, 18 September 1837. 3 John Livingston, ed., Biographical Sketches of Eminent American Lawyers, Now Living , (New York, 1852), 323-325. 4 Wayne County, Pa. With his wife, he received 49 acres from the partition of the lands of John and Elizabeth Denton.'" He may have spent some time in Pennsylvania, as the court records of Wayne County show that he sued an Enoch Tuttle at the May 1804 session of the court; the jury found for the defendant, 11 May 1804, and denied judgement.27 His father, Elisha Eldred, in his will, left Everett 13 tracts of land in Pennsylvania. JAMES ELDRED, the second son of Elisha and Mary (Hulze) Eldred, was born 7 October 1777, in Minisink, New York. As a young man he moved to Milford, Pike County, Pennsylvania, where his brother-in-law, George Buchanan lived. It was here that he would meet and marry his first wife, Mary Mulford. While living in Milford, he purchased land in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, 15 February 1798, from Irah Fuller." Wayne County, Pennsylvania was established 21 March 1798, from the northern part of Northampton County, and the first court in the county was held at the home of George Buchanan. The Court of Wayne County appointed James Eldred, Jason Torrey and Martin Overfield, 11 December 1801, as auditors of the county records. They submitted their report to the February session of the court in 1801; they strongly criticized the county commissioners, and their clerk, for their conduct of county business, and the handling of county funds. The early court records indicate that James Eldred vigorously pursued his business interests; he sued Leonard Cole in 1799,8. and Daniel Cummings in 1800,39 23 Coleman, 26, cited in Note 11. so Gravestone, Wallkill Cemetery, Wallkill, N. It is not known whether Abraham's second wife, Hannah Sickles, was her mother, or step-mother. Polly Mulford, was born, 29 May 1787, probably in Union Township, New Jersey. Her son, Charles Eldred, indicated in the 1880 census listing of his household, that his mother was born in Pennsylvania, but the Mulford family does not appear in the 1790 census of Pennsylvania; so they may have moved from New Jersey after 1790. Abraham Mulford operated an inn in Milford; and served as the third sheriff of Wayne County from 1804 to 1807. After his marriage, James Eldred returned to Minisink, where he purchased the family homestead from his mother, 4 October 1806."
