A Guide to Pennsylvania Soldiers in the Mexican War Antoinette J. Segraves Ty HE MEXICAN WAR, 1846-1848, was not popular in the northern states. Nevertheless, Pennsylvania sent two regiments of volunteer infantry, the First and Second Pennsylvania Infantry. The seeds of the conflict were sown when Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and determined that its southern border was the Rio Grande River. Mexico did not recognize the Republic of Texas and this border. When Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845 as the 28th state, the United States inherited a series of disputes which had to be settled. The most serious of these concerned the southern boundary of Texas, which Mexico declared was the Nueces River. President James K. Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to settle all differences and at the same time to offer to buy California, but Slidell was not even received by the Mexicans. Polk ordered a detachment of troops under General Zachary Taylor into the disputed area of Texas, hoping to incite the Mexicans into an attack. The attack came on 25 April 1846, and Congress declared war on Mexico on 13 May. The war ended in February 1848 with Mexico conceding the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas. Mexico also sold to the United States territory comprising most of the present states of New Mexico and Arizona, parts of Colorado and Wyoming, and all of Utah, Nevada, and California. The abstracted service records of Pennsylvania soldiers presented here are taken from Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1780's-1917, Records Group 94 of the National Archives, and are compiled in National Archives and Records Service (NARS) Microfilm Publication M1028, reels 1-13, as Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the Mexican War in Organizations from the State of Pennsylvania. These films are available for consultation at the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. A soldier of interest may not appear in these records for several 22 Pennsylvania Soldiers in the Mexican War 23 reasons. The soldier may have served under another name or used a different spelling; the soldier may have served in the Regular Army or from another state; records of his service may have been lost, destroyed, or never made; or references made to the soldier in the original records were so obscure that it was not possible to determine his correct name or unit. Other records existing in the National Archives which may contain additional information include pension and bounty-landwarrant application files, medical records, and enlistment registers. Further information also exists in the records abstracted here. Each entry in these abstracts contains the soldier's name, his age at enlistment, his unit, his place of enlistment, and any pertinent remarks found in the original record. This issue begins the alphabetical abstracts of the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, to be continued in subsequent issues. The abstracts of the Second Regiment will follow upon the completion of the First Regiment.
