PENNSYLVANIANS IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, DEATH RETURNS, 1819-1872 abstracted by Elizabeth Newcombe and George K. Bennoitt compiled and edited by Christina Shedlock.' T he City of Charleston Returns of Death, 1819-1926, are housed in the Charleston Archive Department of the Charleston County Public Library. 1 Microfilms of those original records are in the South Carolina History Room of the same library. Beginning in the 1990s the micro¬ filmed records were abstracted through 1872, creating an indexed data¬ base of names, death dates, causes of death, burial places, places of birth, etc.2 In May and June of 201 1 death returns for those born in Pennsylva¬ nia were extracted from that database. Some of the record keepers specified cemeteries by name, while oth¬ ers simply listed the denomination of the site: “Methodist” or “Roman,” for example. These notations could refer to several different cemeteries. “CBG” and “City BG” refer to “city' burial grounds,” one of many public cemeteries with no religious affiliation. Most locations are now unknown or the sites have been redeveloped with no surviving headstones. “Ger¬ man LBG” refers to a German Lutheran burial ground. Depending on the time period, these may be small plots owned by St. John’s Lutheran or St. Matthew’s Lutheran in the northern outskirts of the city' or may refer to Bethany Cemetery, which still exists today. “African burial ground” also appears once in the records, but as with city burial grounds, numerous locations bore that name. The location of “Field of Rest” is also unknown. A survey of tombstone inscriptions from several extant cemeteries was completed in 1936,3 which may shed more light on the location of these cemeteries. With the exception of the above-mentioned instances, this abstract lists burial sites that still exist and are accessible to the public, such as St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery and Magnolia Cemetery. Elizabeth Newcombe is a retired staff member, George K. Bennoitt a former volunteer, and Christina Shedlock a current library' assistant of the South Carolina History' Room at the Charleston County Public Library.
