ELK COUNTY MARRIAGES, 1852-54 contributed by Aaron Goodwill I 11 1852 the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania passed an act to provide for registration of marriages, births, and deaths. No penalty was proscribed for noncompliance, and the ineffec¬ tive act was repealed in 1855. For that short period, however, counties recorded voluntary registrations. Most of these records are on microfilm, and some of those have been abstracted online. In the case of Elk County, marriages have been abstracted and are available online.1 That abstract, however, generally includes only the names of the bride and groom and the marriage date, with a handful of marriages abstracted more fully, incorrectly transcribes several names and dates, and omits a few marriages entirely. The original, complete reg¬ istrations are available on microfilm at the Historical Society of Pennsyl¬ vania, but are somewhat hidden in that collection— on the fourth of fivereels of Elk County will books.2 RETURNS OF MARRIAGE i July 1852: Josiah W.
