Guide to Decedents' Estates Entered in Will Book One, 1787-1807 Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania DOROTHEE HUGHES CAROTJSSO T HE ENTIRE Juniata River valley was included within the county of Cumberland until 1771, when Bedford County was erected. Sixteen years later Huntingdon County was erected out of Bedford by virtue of an Act of Assembly passed 20 September 1787. Originally extending from Franklin County on the southeast, over the Allegheny Mountains northwest to the waters of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, Huntingdon's initial limits were reduced by the erection of Centre County 13 February 1800, and of Clearfield and Cambria Counties 26 March 1804. On 26 February 1846, the west end of Huntingdon County was erected into the new county of Blair. Huntingdon's original eight townships, ranging from the west to the southeast along the Little Juniata River and the main stream of the Juniata were: Frankstown, within which is Sinking Valley, now in Flair County Woodberry (Woodbury), now in Blair County Huntingdon, within which is Woodcock Valley Hopewell Dublin Shirley, within which is the valley of Black Log Creek Tyrone and Barree Townships, northeast of the Little Juniata Out of these, new townships created up to 1807 were: Franklin, from Tyrone, March 1789 Springfield, from Shirley, December 1790 Union, from Hopewell, June 1791 Morris, from Tyrone, August 1794 West, from Barter, April 1796 Allegheny, from Frankstown, by 1797, now in Blair County Warriors Mark, from Franklin, January 1798 Nine days after the enabling Act was passed in 1787, Andrew Henderson was commissioned by the Supreme Executive Council as the first "Register of the Probate of Wills and Granting Letters of Administration 130 Guide to Decedents' Estates 131 in and for the county of Huntingdon." The system of record-keeping he initiated was simple. All wills and administrations and attendant documents were entered in one volume, designated Will Book One, as they were brought in for recording. In addition, a running chronological index to these records was kept, arranged alphabetically by the first letter of a decedent's last name. In this index, however, only the decedent's name, the type of instrument (whether will or administration), and the page in the will book on which the instrument was recorded, were listed. During a one-day visit to the courthouse at Huntingdon, in order to supplement this meager information, the first will book was examined page by page to determine, if possible, the townships in which the various decedents lived, and for pertinent dates having some genealogical value. In the case of wills, the date when the testament was written and the date of probate were also extracted. For administrations, the earliest date of record was extracted as the one nearest the decedent's death. For example, when a widow's renunciation predated the date when letters of administration were granted, that renunciation date was extracted, and is so indicated in the subjoined listing. The supplementary data so extracted has been appended to the chronological and semialphabetical listing of decedents entered in the Index to Will Book One as a guide for researchers working on Huntingdon County residents. Where no place of residence was found in the estate records, wherever possible that information has been suggested in footnotes. The reader is reminded that abstracts of wills and administrations recorded in Bedford County prior to the erection of Huntingdon County appeared in Volume X, Nos. 1 and 2 issues of Publications of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania.
