Sarah (Worthington) Walmsley's Book of Deaths, Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia Counties, 1842-1876

SARAH (WORTHINGTON) WALMSLEY’S BOOK OF DEATHS BUCKS, MONTGOMERY, PHILADELPHIA COUNTIES, 1852-1876 I n a sewn booklet, approximately eight inches tall and six inches wide, over a period of twenty-four years, Sarah (Worthington) Walmsley recorded thirty-nine pages of deaths in southeastern Pennsylvania.1 She included deaths of a few nationally known individuals: Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Abraham Lincoln, Horace Greeley, and his wife. The places of residence are in Bucks County, which she generally abbreviates B. C. (Addisville, Bensalem, Buckingham, Centerville, Hartville, Johnsville, Newtown, Northampton, Southampton, Warminster, Warrington), Mont¬ gomery County (Chelton Hills, Gwynedd, Hatboro, Horsham, Huntingdon Valley, Norristown, Upper Dublin), Philadelphia County (Byberry, Germantown, Lower Dublin, Moreland, Philadelphia, Willow Grove), and a few more distant places. The entries are written with a steel pen, in a good, consistent hand¬ writing— so consistent that the first several pages may have been copied from an earlier book. It is likely that Sarah took many of the deaths from newspapers; others, however, are of people closely related to her or her husband, and those may have had other sources. The handwriting worsens around 1870. There are approximately a dozen entries per page, with lines drawn between entries. She made spelling errors (usually dropped letters), which are not marked [sfc] in the transcript below, and frequently ran out of room at the end of a line. It appears she proofread her entries, as there are erasures for corrections and interlinings for omitted words, which are silently incorporated below. Sarah Worthington was born 31 August 1805, the daughter of Abner W. and Abigail (Walton) Worthington, and died 13 March 1876. She mar¬ ried 20 January 1830 Ezra Walmsley, who was born 14 October 1805, the son of Jesse and Mary (Paul) Walmsley, and died 2 November 1867.2 She does not record the deaths of her husband or children who died during the period covered by her book; presumably she used the Family Record pages of her Bible for that purpose. 1 The volume was purchased by David L. Greene, PHD, FASG, to preserve it for gene¬ alogists and historians, and for publication in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Maga¬ zine, for which the editor expresses her appreciation. The entries beginning in late 1875 are in a different handwriting. 2 George Norwood Comly, Comly Family in America (Philadelphia: the author, 1939), 163. 132 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 (2007) Sarah (Worthington) Walmsley’s Book of Deaths 2007 133 [On the page facing the opening page of deaths is inscribed:] Sarah W.
