THE ANCESTRY OF ISAAC DE TURCK OF BERKS COUNTY IN FRANKENTHAL, GERMANY* I saac de Turck was a member of a small group of Palatines who in 1708 immigrated to Ulster County, New York,1 and later a settler in Berks County, Pennsylvania, where many descendants still live. The 1934 DeTurk/DeTurck genealogy misidentifies his wife. It gives Isaac’s 1685 baptism in Frankenthal, Germany, but does not extend the family further.2 This article corrects those errors and extends his ancestry at Frankenthal through a great-great-grandfather. The Frankenthal registers have been published in German for baptisms and marriages,3 from which the families below have been compiled. All events are at Frankenthal Dutch Reformed Church. All dates are according to the Gregorian calendar. Interestingly, there were often proxy sponsors named in place of sponsors residing elsewhere. ISAAC DE TURCK’S PEDIGREE Immigrant Isaac1 de Turck, baptized 1685, married by say 1710 in New York Marie (LeFevre) Weimar, daughter of Philip LeFevre. Parents JohannesA de Turck, baptized 1650, married 1675 Hester Kip, baptized 1656. Grandparents JohannesB de Turck, baptized 1618, married 1644 Geertruydt de Brier, baptized 1603. * Compiled by the editor, Patricia Law Hatcher, FASG. 1 See “The 1708 Palatines of Ulster County,” New York Genealogical and Biographi- cal Record 139(2008):165—84. 2 Eugene Peter DeTurk, History and Genealogy of the DeTurk, DeTurck Family: Descendants of Isaac DeTurk and Maria DeHarcourt [sic] (Kutztown, Pa.: DeTurk Family Association, 1934). The baptism is incorrectly stated to have occurred at the French Church. Other publications also misidentify the wife as Maria DeHarcourt. A. Stapleton, Memorials of the Huguenots in America (Carlisle, Pa.: Huguenot Publishing Co., 1901), 62—64, additionally constructs an entirely fictional story of young Isaac De Turk escaping from the wealthy family estate in northern France to Frankenthal (rather difficult since the family had been in Frankenthal for generations). The erroneous wife is repeated recently in Don Yoder, The Pennsylvania German Broadside: A History and Guide (University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2005), 144. 3 Adolf von den Velden, Registres de l’Eglise Réformée Néerlandaise de Frankenthal [Frankenthal Dutch Reformed Church] au Palatinat, 1565—1689: I Baptêes and II Mariages in Documents Historiques, Numbers 2 and 3 (Bruxelles: Société d’Histoire du Protestantisme Belge, Librairie Evangélique, 1911, 1913). These publications are in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. 226 Review copy 12 June, 2008 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 (2008) 2008 Ancestry of Isaac de Turck of Berks County 227 Johan Pieter Kip, born in Hanau, married 1653 Rachel du Four, born in Hanau. This was an odd marriage. Gertrude had married first 8 June 1620– only two years after Johannes was born. She was baptized 9 August 1603 (see page 231), hence was fourteen years older than her husband. Her last child was born when she was forty-six. ISAAC1 DE TURCK (JohannesA, JohannesB, JacobC), son of Johannes De Turck and Hester Kip, was baptized 17 January 1685 at the Frankenthal Reformed Church. He died between 22 January 1727/8 (will) and 1 April 1728 (probate). He married by say 1710 MARIE (LEFEVRE) WEIMAR, widow of Peter Weimar. She was also a member of the 1708 group of Palatines. Maria was born about 1671 (37 on denization list), hence much older than Isaac if age is correct. Peter died by June 1708 (not on denization list). 5 The will of Isaac De Turck of Oly [Oley] Township, Philadelphia [now Berks] County, names wife Mary, “her daughter” Catherine Wimar, and their two children Esther and John.6 There has been conflict about Mary’s maiden name. The DeTurk genealogy incorrectly identifies her as Maria DeHarcourt, daughter of Jean DeHarcourt of Mulhofen, whose daughter Susan had married in Europe Jean Bertolet, the de Turck’s neighbor in Oley.7 A Moravian personal history of their son supports the LeFevre identification. Johann Turck [DeTurck] was born in Oley September 23, 1713, to Isaac Turck, who was born in Frankenthal [671 Frankenthal] and Maria, nee LeFeber, from the Palatinate, from Pelicam [6741 Billigheim]. . . . He was baptized in 1743 in Oley since he stemmed from the Mennonites. He was a farmer. On May 13, 1740, he married Debora nee Hoch. He was received by the Moravians in 1741.8 5 William A. The identification is based on a transcription of a 1718 letter in German signed “Maria DeTurk [new line] Geborhne De Heroken,” reproduced in Israel Daniel Rupp, History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon (Lancaster, Pa.: G. Hills, 1844), 234—35, interpreted by DeTurk as meaning she was a DeHarcourt. It is not stated if Geborhne De Heroken is in the same handwriting. 8 Franz Rink and Frederick S. Weiser, “Genealogical Data from the Registers of the Moravian Congregation in the Oley Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania,” Der Reggeboge Review copy 12 June, 2008 230 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 A European record solidly confirms that Marie was a LeFevre. Peter Weimar, widower, citizen at Manheim, married 5 May 1705 at Barbelroth near Bergzabern Reformed Church, Maria Le Febure, daughter of Philip Le Febure, citizen and farmer at Mülhofen. 9 Children of Isaac de Turck and Maria LeFevre: i.
