In Memoriam Charles Brunner Barclay I T IS WITH DEEP REGRET that we announce the death of Charles Brunner Barclay on 24 June 1995, He joined the the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in October 1962. Charles Barclay, known to all of us as “Mitch,” served for nineteen years as the GSP President. In more than ninety years, only one president served the Society for a longer period of time. His tenure as President marked a period in the life of the society notable for its advances. Mitch helped steer the Society toward higher standards of professional genealogy and direc ted a strong program of lectures, tours, publications, and acces¬ sions. Upon his retirement, he was elected Honorary President. We acknowledge our great debt to him. Barclay was a retired business executive, having started his career as a stock broker for his father’s firm, Barclay, Moore and Company. He later joined the Bentley and Harris Manufacturing Company, where he served as Vice President and Treasurer until his retirement in 1961. Barclay served as Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants from 1968 through 1970. He was a member of the Sons of the Ameri¬ can Revolution as well as many other organizations and clubs. An excellent racing sailor, he taught and encouraged the sport of sailing to young and old. He is survived by his wife, Katharine Beale Barclay; a daughter, Katharine Barclay Heilman; three sons, Charles B. Barclay, Jr., Frederick B. Barclay, and John K. Barclay; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Marian Barclay Johnson. 229
