Some Ancestors and Descendants of Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania by Elda Shantz Bardsley* T HE TSCHANZ (SCHANZ) FAMILY NAME occurs in several areas of the cantons of Bern and Zurich, Switzerland. Many fami¬ lies of that name in Germany are descended from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century emigrants from Switzerland. Several repre¬ sentatives of those Swiss “Einwanderer” families emigrated to Penn¬ sylvania during the eighteenth century.1 One Schanz family changed its name to Johns, from which family Johnstown, Pennsylvania, took its name. “Johns” may have been an attempt at phonetic spelling; or, perhaps the family may have known that the name is thought by some to have been derived from the French “Jean.”2 On the other hand, some families appear to have believed the name related to “Schanze,” meaning entrenchment, because a symbol for entrenchment was used on shields (wappen) hung in the Reformed Church in Sigriswil to which belonged the Tschanz family this study concerns.3 The Tschanz family of Sigriswil had been there for some time, the name note: The author, a native of Philadelphia, graduated from Temple University in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in political science and economics. The first pastor (Pfarrer) after the fire, Daniel Mueller, recon¬ structed the records for the years 1642—1671 by interviewing parish¬ ioners.5 Despite the usual problems relating to genealogical research, a reasonable reconstruction of the family history for some ancestors and descendants of Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania, is pre¬ sented below. Apparent variant spellings of names and places in the following information are provided here as found in the original records. The arrival and registration at Philadelphia of two men named Jacob Tschanz within four days, on 5 October and 8 October 1737, seemed for some years to make distinguishing between them un¬ likely.6 The failure to list family members traveling with the Jacob Tschanz on the Townshend created additional problems in identify¬ ing him, his siblings, and descendants. The fact that names copied from gravestones in the Sprogell Cemetery, Potts town, Montgomery County, before it was closed and moved, duplicated some of the Schantzes on the Charming Nancy list added confusion.7 TheJacob Schantz listed as a passenger on the Charming Nancy was a member of the Amish group traveling in that vessel who later be¬ longed to the Conestoga congregation in Lancaster County.8 The Jacob Schantz who purchased land in Montgomery (then Philadel¬ phia) County is clearly identified as the one buried in Sprogell Ceme¬ tery by the dates of the Orphans* Court papers,9 and of his death in February 1781, attested by the surviving copy of the photograph of his gravestone.10 The Jacob on the Charming Nancy, having been con¬ nected to the Amish group as noted above, the one buried in Spro¬ gell, was assumed to have been the passenger on the Townshend. Werner Hacker equated the passenger on the Townshend with the Jacob Schantz whose manumission and departure in April 1737 were reported in his Auswanderungen aus Baden und dem Breisgau.u A record in the Bern Stadtsarchiv, dated 9 February 1737, states that Jacob Tschanz, oldest son of Ulrich, deceased, and his mother, asked to be permitted to take their property from Thun and go to Pennsylvania. In that record, the mother is stated to have been re¬ married to Hans Georg Kraus, of Blankenloch, near Karlsruhe, i Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 13 Baden, where they and four other children of the first marriage re¬ sided.12 A Hans Georg Kraus appears on the Townshend ship list with Jacob Schantz, supporting the identification.13 As no women or chil¬ dren were named among the passengers of the Townshend, the women or younger children who made and survived the voyage are unknown; it is possible that some of those buried in Sprogell Ceme¬ tery may have included younger children of Ulrich. No record of Hans Georg Kraus has yet been found in Pennsylvania. The church register of the Reformed Church at Blankenloch (1672-1738) records the death of Ulrich Tschanz on 30 May 1734, at age 47; the spouse’s name given is Anna Maria. This same church register also records the marriage, on 17 May 1735, ofJohann Georg Kraus, son of Johann Georg Kraus, to Maria Anna, widow of Urich Tschantsch (sic).14 In the record of his widow’s remarriage, Ulrich seems to be stated to have been born in Krenkelhaus or Krenkelhart, a place not yet identified, which may have been Maria Anna’s birth¬ place. Alternatively, the place name may have been a misunderstand¬ ing of Ringoltswil, the home of Ulrych Surer, sponsor at Ulrich Tschanz’ baptism,15 Ulrich Tschanz is also said to have been a salt¬ peter processor in that entry. Maria Anna’s second husband is called a saltpeter maker in Jacob’s and her application to remove property from Thun.16 The Blankenloch church register also includes listings for a Peter Tshanz, identified as from Sigriswil, Bern, and also as a saltpeter processor. Sigriswil is located on the eastern side of Lake Thun. On the assumption that Peter was Ulrich’s brother, Julius Billeter’s re¬ cords for Sigriswil were checked for males of the names and birth years indicated by the Blankenloch records. Peter and Ulrich Tschanz appear as the second and third sons of Peter Tschanz and Anna von Gun ten.17 A search of the baptismal register for the Re¬ formed Parish Church of Sigriswil shows that Ulrych Tschanz, third son of Peter Tschanz and Anna von Gun ten, was baptized 9 October 1687; sponsors were Ulrych Surer, Hans Kaeller, and Barbara Buseli.18 According to the same Sigriswil Reformed Church records, Ulrich Tschanz’s older brother, Peter, was baptised 28 September 1684. As second and third of four sons in the family, it is not surprising that they joined the exodus from Switzerland to those areas in southwest¬ ern Germany where economic opportunities were believed to be The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 14 better in consequence of the population losses and devastation of and after the Thirty Years* War. Around 1720, another set of Schanz brothers from Bern, Benedict and Hans (Jean) from Wichtrach, ap¬ peared in the church register at Weingarten, and later in Welschneureuth, both places close to Karlsruhe, Baden.19 An Al¬ brecht Schanz from Niedrichsdorf, Bern, and Johann Georg Schanz from Gondelsheim, Bern, are other immigrants in the same period from the same area.20 Thus far, more records have been found in the area around Karlsruhe for Peter than for Ulrich Tschanz, The Peter Tschanz who married Anna Margaretha Fechter in Niefern in August 1711 was said to be from Sigriswil, Bern, and son of Peter. Registration of that marriage confirms the Sigriswil baptismal record.21 Four children of Peter and Anna Margaretha have been identified22: i, Maria Barbara; bp. 1711 (?), Niefern, n.f.r. ii. Hanss Peter; d. 7 Aug. 1722, age 6, Blankenloch. in. Isaak; b. 20 Feb. 1718, Soellingen, n.f.r. iv. Georg Simon; b. 23 Feb. 1722, Blankenloch, n.f.r. Hans Jacob Tschanz, identified as son of the Ulrich who died in Blankenloch, received communion in 1735 in Weingarten, northeast of Karlsruhe, as a fifteen-year-old. Ulrich is reported as a soapmaker in that record.23 The Blankenloch and Weingarten records, together with the above-mentioned application to Thun to withdraw property, contradict the long stay in the Netherlands posited in “The Shantz Family” monograph of 1930. The religious affiliation of this family in the migrating generations is not completely clear. Ulrich Tschanz is listed as Reformed in the registration of his death in Blankenloch, but that may be an error. On the other hand, both he and Peter were baptised as infants in the Reformed Church, Sigriswil. A Peter Tschanz, probably their father, is listed as “Reisseckelmeister” in that church.24 As a former grena¬ dier, according to the Blankenloch marriage record, Hans Georg Kraus, the immigrant’s stepfather, is unlikely to have been a Mennonite. In any case, by 1750, when Jacob Schantz became a citizen in Pennsylvania, he was presumably a Mennonite, as he was among those who scrupled to take an oath.25 In 1753, he is reported to have contributed to the erection of the Coventry Mennonite Meeting House in Chester County, Pa., across the Schuylkill River from New ** * Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 15 Hanover (now Pottstown, Montgomery County) .26 Jacob’s first wife, tentatively identified as Magdalene, may have been a Mennonite. Jacob’s relict and probable second wife, Catherine, was a daughter of Christian Beary (Bieri) , whose family was associated with Coventry Mennonite Meeting; her nephew Christian, buried in that cemetery, is named as minister.27 Jacob’s son Isaac is listed as one of three men in the acquisition of land for the second Coventry Mennonite Meeting House.28 Isaac Shantz married Barbara Reiff, member of a family well documented as Mennonites, and their descendants in Canada include Mennonite ministers.29 No record has yet been found of Hans Georg Kraus in Pennsylva¬ nia, but it seems possible that the family of Valentine Kraus, a neigh¬ bor of Jacob Schantz, was related to him although the younger Jacob was merely called “trusty friend” as executor of Kraus’s will.30 ImmigrantJacob has not been identified in public documents be¬ tween his arrival in 1737 and his purchase of land in Philadelphia County (present Montgomery County) in 1746. On 9 May of that year, as Jacob Schance, he purchased 100 acres and buildings for £140 from Yost Fulhard and his wife Elizabeth, David Miller and his wife Hannah, the heirs of Mathias Creutzman. The land abutted the Schuylkill River; Creutzman had earlier purchased it from John Henry Sprogell.31Jacob mortgaged the same land for the same sum to Yost Fulherd, shoemaker, of Philadelphia County, and repaid the debt by 12 April 1749.32 In 1749, as Jacob Shans of New Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, he purchased 40 acres from Martin Orner of the same place, the property adjoining that owned byjames Brooke and Jacob Frick.33 In 1761, as Jacob Schans, he purchased 3 acres from James Brooke, of Hanover Township, and his wife Hanna.34 In 1762, as Jacob Shants, he purchased two tracts of land for £168 7s. from John Wenger, of “Emity” Township in Berks County, and Margaret his wife. One piece of this land, containing 70 acres 50 perches, abutted his own land, the Schuylkill River, and the Great Road leading to Philadelphia, with a small strip of land left for a burying ground (Sprogell Cemetery) ; the second parcel contained 9.75 acres.35 In 1765, as Jacob Shantz, he acquired from Jacob Frick (innholder) and his wife Catherine, a tract containing 1 acre 100 perches in New Hanover, abutting his own land and the Great Road leading from Reading to Philadelphia.36 In 1768, Jacob Schauntz — 16 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine bought fromJames Brooke of Limerick, trustee ofjames Brooke, late of Frankford and New Hanover, 2 acres 29 perches, with buildings, again abutting Jacob’s own land.37 In 1773, as Jacob Shontz of New Hanover Township, he purchased from David Longacre and his wife Barbara, also of New Hanover, four tracts in New Hanover— one of 106 acres, another of 110 acres, a third of 75 acres, and a fourth of 7 acres 128 perches all of which Longacre had acquired from the estate of Jacob High.38 When Jacob Shantz died, intestate, his estate included two tracts of land, one of 170 acres and the other about 300 — acres.39 In addition to their lands and animals, Jacob Shantz and his sons Isaac andJacob were all named on the tax list for distilleries in 1779,40 As noted above, immigrant Jacob died in February 1781. His estate was divided among his surviving children in response to the petition filed in Philadelphia Orphans’ Court.41 No evidence has been found to confirm that Jacob’s first wife was named Magdalena other than the presence of the name “Magdalena Schanz” on the list copied from Sprogell Cemetery gravestones. Inasmuch as a Magdalena Tschanz, who might have been a sister, ap¬ pears in the church record of Weingarten, Baden, additional confirmation of the identification is desirable.42 Schantz43: Children of Jacob and Magdalena (?) i. Isaac; b. 14Jan. 1748; d. 11 Nov. 1802.44 Isaac Shantz was stated to be the oldest surviving son of Jacob45in the petition for division of Jacob’s estate in 1781. He married Barbara, daughter of Christian Reiff.46 Their surviving children are enumerated in his estate papers as Abraham and Christian, adults; Isaac and David, minors above fourteen years; Fronica and Joseph, minors under fourteen years; and Maria, married to John Shoemaker, Another son, Samuel, is believed to be buried in Sprogell cemetery, the gravestone reading “SS.” It is perhaps worth noting that the list of items sold in Isaac’s estate included twelve books, Bibles, testaments and hymn books, and a Ready Reckoner. His widow Barbara signed documents with her name in German script, rather than with a mark. Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 17 Christian Shantz, the second son of Isaac and Barbara, purchased the two tracts of land in the estate, the eldest son, Abraham, not wishing to take them at the valuation. Christian conveyed the property to Abraham Stauffer on 29 March 181O.47 Conveyance was subject to the dower charge to be paid after Barbara Shantz’s death. In 1943, a petition was made to Orphans’ Court, Montgomery Co., Pa., to clear title to the land. The dower charge had never been claimed, because Barbara and her family had gone to Ontario, Canada, where she died in 1820.48 + 1. ii. Jacob. iii. Jacob Painter (Benner) by 1816, when her son John Longacre died and she and Jacob Painter were named in the administration papers50; buried as Benter in Vincent Mennonite Cemetery, Vincent, Chester Co., Pa.51 The place in the family of three males named Schanz among those buried in Sprogell Cemetery, according to Grobb, has not been otherwise documented; Grobb noted one male as H. V. Tschanz, with no dates or other information. Because Jacob was listed as “Hans Jacob” in Baden, it seems possible that this person was actually H. U., for Hans Ulrich.52 If the family was following the German naming pattern, then this should have been the eldest son, named for his paternal grandfather Ulrich. In that case, theJacob born in 1748 was both younger twin and third son, named for his father. The same naming pattern would mean that their mother was the daughter of , and thatJacob’s second daughter should have been Isaac named for Maria Anna, her paternal grandmother. Alternatively, H. V. or H. U, may have been one of immigrantJacob’s siblings. The Abraham who died in February 1778, and Anthoni who died in March 1778 may have been children, grandchildren, or siblings of the immigrant Jacob. Neither was in the list of Non-Associators in 1776, so they may have been under or over the age of conscription then, or born thereafter. The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 18 Jacob Schantz married (2.) Catherine Beary (Bieri). After his death, Catherine went to live in Vincent Twp,, Chester Co,, and died there in December 1797.53 Children of Jacob and Catharine (Bieri) Schantz54: i. The remainder of this family history will be con¬ cerned with the descendants of the Jacob Schantz, who was born 14 January 1748 in New Hanover, Montgomery Co., Pa., and moved to Coventry, Chester Co., about 1802. The name will be spelled here in most cases as “Shantz,” which is the way he appears to have spelled it, although the German script of his signature seems to have been misread. On 19 February 1782, Jacob purchased 300 acres of land in New Hanover from his brother Isaac and wife Barbara, in a deed which seems not to have been recorded but is referred to in a later deed dated 2 November 1800.57Jacob was named on the New Hanover tax list for 300 acres in 1785.58 In April 1800, Jacob purchased 241 acres 34 perches in Coventry, Chester Co., from John Rinehart, Isaac Shantz, and Elizabeth (Shantz) Longenaker, administrators of the estate of Peter Longenaker, Elizabeth’s deceased husband.59 This purchase con¬ sisted largely of land that Peter Longacre had acquired from the estate of his father, Jacob Longacre.60 In a deed of 2 November 1800, Jacob and Mary Shantz conveyed a small parcel to Conrad Keeler, weaver, also of New Hanover, which was described as part of 106 acres purchased from Isaac and Barbara Shantz on 19 February 1782.61 Witnesses were Isaac Shantz and Benjamin Markley. There appears to be an “M” in Mary’s signature which may have been her mark rather than a middle initial, but given that such families were near neighbors, she may have been a Moyer Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 19 or a Messimer by birth. Still, as residents of New Hanover,Jacob and Mary Shantz sold 10 acres to Henry Messimer, 7 November 1800.62 Then, on 8 April 1802, as of Coventry Twp., Chester Co.,Jacob and Mary Shantz sold 192 acres in New Hanover to Valentine Schalkop, land identified as having been purchased from Isaac and Barbara Schantz in 1782.63 Taken together, the land sales in New Hanover seem to account for the real property left by the father Jacob. In 1822, Jacob and Mary H. Shantz sold more than 106 acres in Coventry, Chester Co., to Jacob Shantz, Jr., with certain rights of house, garden, etc., maintained for Jacob (Sr.) during his natural life and for one year thereafter for the benefit of his said wife, Mary, if she should survive him.64 The next day, Jacob and Mary sold 120 adjacent acres to son Abraham, also of Coventry.65 Jacob appears in the 1820 census in Coventry as Jacob Shonce, next to anotherjacob Shonce, who can be identified as his son Jacob, and near his other surviving son, Abraham Shonce.66 According to his gravestone in Oak Grove Cemetery, Parkerford, Chester Co., Jacob Shantz died 11 March 1823.67 The settlement of Jacob’s estate included payments to Elizabeth (Shantz) Painter, rep¬ resenting interest on her dower from Peter Longenecker, deceased, and to her children, Isaac, Peter, andjacob Longenecker68; to Henry Rhodes, in right of his wife Esther (Longacre) Rhodes69; and to the children of Mary (Shantz) Stauffer, Jacob’s deceased daughter; to William Kellar, in right of his wife Mary, daughter of Peter Shantz, deceased; and to Jacob R., “other child of the deceased Peter.”70 , possibly Messimer Jacob1 Shantz married (1.) Mary (M?) or Moyer, who died 9 March 1805, aged 58, according to her grave¬ stone adjacent to Jacob’s.71 Shantz72: Children of Jacob1 and Mary (M?) 2. i. Mary, widow ofjohn Heneks, according to her gravestone.77 She is identified as “Sister Mary Shantz-nee Rinehart,” and is affiliated with the Parkerford Church of the Brethren in the History of the Church of the Brethren of the Eastern Disltrict of Pennsylva¬ nia.78 There are no children known of the marriage of Jacob and Mary (Rinehart) Heneks Shantz. Identities of the male and the fe¬ male under ten years of age in their household in the 1810 census is uncertain. Mary Ann and Jacob R. Shantz, children of Jacob’s de¬ ceased son Peter, had a guardian appointed after their grandfather’s death, by which time they were both over fourteen but still minors; however, they appear to be counted in their mother’s nearby house¬ hold in the 1810 census.79 The Second American-Born Generation 3. Peter2 Schanz (Jacob1) born in New Hanover, Montgomery Co,, Pa., 4 December 1776, according to his gravestone in Oak Grove Cemetery,80 He moved, as did his family, to Chester Co., Pa., and Peter Schantz was named as a tanner, of Coventry, in a deed recording the purchase of 32 acres 58 perches of land in Coventry, 25 April 1807, from Peter Turner.81 His cousin, Peter Longacre, son of Elizabeth (Shantz) Longacre, was apprenticed to him. Peter Shantz died 27 May 1810,82 leaving his widow and two young children. The inventory of his possessions at his death included household, farm, and tanning goods, and was valued at £728 12s. lOd. of goods and chattels, with a total estate of £1,211 0 s. 7d.83 The real estate was conveyed to his brother Jacob2 Shantz, called Junior. Peter Shantz married Susanna Rhodes (Roth), daughter of Henry of Charlestown, Chester Co. Susan renounced administration of her husband’s estate in favor of her father, Henry Roads, and father-inlaw, Jacob Shantz.84 Her father signed these documents “Heinrich Roth,” as he did his own will, under which Susanna inherited at least $208.89.85 Susanna signed her sampler “Susanna Rodes.”86 She ap¬ pears in Coventry, Chester Co., Pa., in the census of 1810, next to C. Schantz and E. Schantz, on the same page as both Jacob and Abra¬ ham Schantz and Peter Lonemaker.87 The C, Schantz and E. Schantz are probably Catherine, daughter ofJacob, who died in 1814, accord¬ ing to a gravestone in Oak Grove, and Elizabeth (Shantz) Longacre. Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 21 Susan has not yet been identified in the 1820, 1830, or 1840 census records. She purchased 3 acres 142 perches of land in East Coventry, 1 April 1845, abutting land owned by her son-in-law, William Keller,88 She lived there until about 1858, when she was persuaded to live with her daughter and son-in-law.89 Her name appears in the 1850 census next to that of William Keller, and in the 1860 census in his house¬ hold, with that adjoining dwelling empty.90 Susanna survived as a widow for fifty-four years. She died 20 Mar. 1864, aged eighty years and ten months, and was buried next to Peter in Brower Oak Grove, Parkerford, Chester Co., Pa,91 Children of Peter2 and Susanna (Rodes) Shantz: 6. i. Mary Ann (Maria Anna); m. William Keller, 5 Aug. 1824, East Vincent Reformed Church, Chester Co., Pa 92 + 7. ii. Jacob R(hodes). 4. Jacob2 Shantz, called Junior (Jacob1), was born in New Hanover, Montgomery Co., Pa., in 1780, as calculated from his gravestone.93 He moved to Chester Co., Pa., where he acquired land from the estate of his brother Peter, which was administered by their father,Jacob, and Henry Roads, 1 Apr. 1810.94 Of that property, he and his wife Eliza¬ beth subsequently conveyed 15 acres 52 perches to George Deemer on 31 Jul. 1813. Jacob, Jr., purchased a 4-acre wooded lot from George Prise 30 Dec. 1818.96 For some time, he had probably been farming the land in Coventry which he purchased from his father in 1822, as noted above. He also purchased two tracts of land from Nicholas Keiser in Apr. 1822.97 In 1828, Jacob, Jr., and Elizabeth entered into a deed of trust with Jacob Longenaker and his wife Phebe, as trustees for their children, covering a messuage and tract of 7 acres 5 perches, paid for by Elizabeth (Shantz) (Longacre) Painter,Jacob Longenaker’s mother.98 In 1835,Jacob2 Shantz entered into an agreement with John Place, representing the Schuylkill Navi¬ gation Company, to submit the valuation of two tracts of land, containing together 1 acre 56 perches, to arbitrators. The abitrators’ report was dated 15 Aug. 1835, but Jacob died intestate before executing the deed for the land, so his widow Elizabeth and the surviving children or their guardians executed a deed 1 Apr. 1837." Jacob Schantz,Jr., appears in the census of 1810 in Coventry, Ches¬ ter Co., with a female between 16 and 26 years and a child of each sex under 10. In the 1820 census, where he wasJacob Shonce, there 22 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine was one boy under 10, three girls under 10, and one girl 10—16 in the household.100 The 1830 census lists one boy less than 5 years, one boy in the 5 to 10 range, one 10-15, one 15-20, one 20-30, and four females under 20.101 Jacob2 died intestate, owning almost 200 acres, with an adminstration account totaling $19,142.102 According to Chester Co. Orphans* Court records for 1836, Enos and Emeline Shantz, his children, mi¬ nors under 14, had Jacob Chrisman appointed guardian; Sarah, a minor above 14, had Henry Chrisman appointed guardian, and Ja¬ cob, a minor child above 14, initially had his father’s brother Abra¬ ham appointed. When Abraham Shantz refused to act, John Kulp (Kolb) was appointed guardian.103 Jacob, Jr., owed a judgment to Frederick Setzler for $1,000, entered 14 Apr. 1831, on which payment appears to have been completed in 1843.104 About 1809, Jacob Shantz, Jr., married Elizabeth Moyer, daughter of Michael Moyer of Upper Providence, Montgomery Co., and widow of Paul Fry of the same place.105 In July 1813, Elizabeth’s name ap¬ pears in the deed of sale mentioned earlier. She was enumerated in the census of 1870 in East Coventry, in a household with her son Enos.106 Elizabeth survived until 14 Aug. 1878, when she was 83 years old.107 Children of Jacob2 (Junior) and Elizabeth (Moyer) Shantz: + 8. i. Of the 120 acres of land Abraham bought from his father, as noted above, he and his wife Mary sold 27 acres 35 perches to Henry Grubb on 13 May 1833.118 They sold 1 acre 76 perches in Jan. 1843 to Levi Smith,119 and sold a further 39 acres 29 perches on the "road leading to Shantz ford,” in Apr. 1847 to Isaac Buckwalter of East Vincent.120 In 1851, Abraham, still of East Coventry, sold 3 acres 73 perches of woodland to Conrad Longenecker, also of East Coventry, 121 In 1854, Abraham Shatz (sir), of Union Twp., Berks Co., where he was presumably living with his daughter Anna, wife of Isaac Yocom, sold 6.5 acres to Gilbert Brown of East Coventry, part of the land which Abraham had received from his father.122 Frederick Setzler had filed a judgment against Abraham which remained a lien on his real estate, but at Abraham’s request that the tract be discharged from the operation of the judgment, the tract was released.123 In March 1855, Abraham, still of Union Twp., Berks Co., sold 15 acres to William Sheeler of East Coventry, for $2,900.124 By April 1856, when he sold another parcel of 15 acres 80 perches to Samuel N. Rowland, Abraham Shantz was identified as of Philadelphia,125 where he was living in the household of Mary (Brower) Shantz, widow of two of his sons, Jacob S. and Abraham, Jr- 126 y Abraham appears in the Coventry, Chester Co., Pa., list of taxable inhabitants of 1807 as a laborer; in 1814 as a yeoman, in 1821 as a farmer, and in 1828 as an innkeeper.127 In the Chester County Ar¬ chives Index to Tavern Licence Petitions, he appears from 1822 through 1833, in five of those years for the place called “Farmers and Mechanics Hotel.”128 In the census of 1810 for Coventry, Chester Co., in the of household “Alem” or Abram Schantz, two adults are listed between 16 and 26 years, and a boy and a girl under 10.129 In the 1820 census, where his surname is spelled Shonce, Abraham’s house¬ hold comprised three boys under 10, one boy 10-16, one girl over 16, and one girl under 10.130 One female between 26 and 45 in the household was, of course, Abraham’s wife Mary, but the second fe¬ male has not been identified. By 1830, Abraham’s household in¬ cluded one male 20-30, one 15-20, one 10-15, and one 40-50.131 In 1840, the census listed one male 20-30, one 50-60, one female 20-30, and one 50-60.132 In 1850, Abraham and his housekeeper are counted twice, as families 223 and 241 in East Coventry.133 Abraham died in Philadelphia, 21 Feb. 1861.134 24 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Abraham2 Shantz married Mary, daughter of Nicholas Snyder of Vincent, Chester Co., Pa.135 According to her gravestone, Mary died 29 Jan. 1849.136 Children of Abraham2 and Mary (Snyder) Shantz: 137 10. b. 18 29 i. 18. Jacob3 R(hodes) Shantz (Peter2, Jacob1) was born 4 Jan. 1808, according to his gravestone in Oak Grove.141 There is no clear evi¬ dence who served as a surrogate father after the death of his father in 1810, although his grandfather Jacob appears to have been a guard¬ ian, On 5 Apr. 1831, Jacob purchased one parcel of land measuring 48 acres 104 perches and a second piece of 20 acres 72 perches in Vincent Twp., Chester Co,, from Samuel Haldeman for $1,750, which 142 Wiant to then he mortgaged Jacob Jacob R. Shantz and his wife appear to have farmed this property without the additional occupa¬ tional source of income, such as blacks mi thing, store, or tavern, which his uncles and cousins had. In 1858, Jacob and Lydia Shantz of East Vincent sold to Henry Huzzard 43 perches of land fronting on the road, a setback from the road which still pertains to the dwelling.143 According to the 1810 census,Jacob R. appears to have lived in the household of his widowed mother Susanna.144 He has not been iden¬ tified in either the 1820 or 1830 census. In 1840,Jacob R.’s household includes one boy 5-10, one 10-15, and a girl 5-10,145 The ten- to fifteen-year-old has not been identified. In the 1850 census, Jacob R/s household included his mother-in-law Elizabeth Grubb, and five surviving sons and daughter.146 By 1860, Elizabeth Grubb had died, but two younger children and a daughter-in-law were added to the household.147 Another son,Joseph W. Shantz, aged thirteen, can be found in the household of Jacob R.’s brother-in-law, William Kellar.148Jacob R, Shantz died 16Jun. 1863 in the Pennsylvania Hospital Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 25 for the Insane, Philadelphia.149 Proceeds from the sale of his real estate in 1867 were $6,472.29.150 Jacob R. married “Lidia” Harley, 27 May 1830. On their marriage certificate, a line is drawn through both “daughter of” and the blank space where the bride’s father should be named, although Jacob R.’s long-deceased father, Peter, is named in the appropriate space.151 Elizabeth Grubb is identified as Jacob’s mother-in-law in the 1850 census, as noted above.152 Elizabeth Harley and a daughter, aged under ten, appear together in a household in the census of 1820, on the same page as Elizabeth’s brothersJacob andJohn, and her father, Rudolph Harley.153 The History of Harleysville and Lower Salford Town¬ ship, 1886, contains a statement that an unnamed daughter of Rudolph Harley had an illegitimate child, the daughter later marry¬ ing and “becoming respectable.”154 Elizabeth is the only daughter not named in that source, but she is named in Rudolph Harley’s will.155 By the time of that will, January 1827, Elizabeth Harley had married Abraham Grubb as his second wife.156 Both Lydia Shantz and Elizabeth Grubb became members of the Brownback Reformed Church in 1836, although the Harley family was affiliated with the Coventry Brethren Church.157 Children of Jacob R(hodes) and Lydia (Harley) Shantz158: 22. i. Isaac3 Shantz (Jacob2,Jacob1) was born 1 Feb. 1810/31 Jan. 1810 in Coventry, Chester Co., Pa,168 As the oldest surviving son, and as administrator of the estate of his father, Jacob Shantz, Jr., Isaac sold 62 acres 66 perches of land on 5 Feb. 1838 for $4,406.32 to William 26 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine B. Hahn, M.D., of Limeric, Philip Hahn, merchant, and Samuel Sharpless, coachmaker, of Norristown, as tenants in common.169 He sold an additional 10 acres 36 perches of land to Jacob Custer on 3 170 Apr. 1838. Isaac purchased, for $2,222.52 on 14 Apr. 1838, part of his father’s former property, subject to his mother’s right of dower, from Henry Christman and his wife Eleanor.171 In 1839, he acquired from Eliza¬ beth (Moyer) Shantz and Frederick Yost, executors for Catherine Moyer, 5 acres, which Isaac and his wife Catherine (Christman) Shantz sold the same day to Elizabeth Shantz, Isaac’s mother.172 In 1841, Isaac and Catharine Shantz sold 2 acres 27 perches of land to Matthias Kolb. This was part of the estate of Jacob Shantz, Jr,, ad¬ judged to Isaac, subject to payment of $275 dower to Elizabeth Shantz,Jacob’s widow, Isaac’s mother.173 In 1848, Isaac was the high¬ est bidder for two lots of the estate of Abraham Mowrer.174 In 1850, Thomas Hippie and his wife Violetta conveyed to Isaac 2 acres, sub¬ ject to the payment of a dower to Elizabeth Shantz.175 Isaac acquired a further 2 acres from Jonah and Edward Fudge, executors of the last will and testament of Job Fudge, subject to the interest of Fudge’s widow and relict, in April 1855.176 Isaac3 Shantz appeared in the 1840 census for Coventry, Chester Co.177 He was listed in the 1850 census with his wife Catharine, three sons, and a daughter.178 In the 1860 census, the family appears with Catherine as its head, and with Isaac’s bachelor brother Enos in the household.179 Isaac died 21 Dec. 1852 of typhoid fever.180 His brother Enos administered the estate, which totaled $6,109.68,181 Isaac3 Shantz married (1.) Hannah Shantz, reported as 24 years of age, is enumerated in the 1850 census for Isaac’s household; she received a small payment in his administration accounts. Hannah married William Ash, 4 Sep. 1858, and died S Feb, 1903,191 She is not identi¬ fied as a family member in Isaac’s estate papers, nor in those of his father. 36. 18.Jacob3S(nyder) Shantz (Abraham, Jacob1) was born 29Jan. 1810 in Coventry, Chester Co., Pa.192 He was entered asJacob Shantz in the petitions for tavern licenses in 1834-36 for “Shantz’s Tavern”; in 1837 for “Lawrenceville Hotel”; in 1838 for “Farmers and Mechanics Tav¬ ern,” the name his father had used for his tavern. In 1839, he called his tavern “General Washington Crossing the Delaware.” His name appears as Jacob S. Shantz in 1842, and, for the last time, in 1843, without the middle initial and with no name given for the tavern.193 Jacobs S. Shantz appears in the 1840 census with three boys and one girl in the household.194 He died intestate, of epilepsy, 10 Jul. 1845.195 No land is mentioned in the appraisal, and only his half of the store, in which he was partner with his brother Abraham, the total value being $1,399. Some items listed in the inventory seem to be the tavern or hotel equipment, such as twelve “bred” baskets and twelve table cloths.196 Jacob S. Shantz married Mary Brower, and after his death, she administered his estate.197 Mary Shantz applied for tavern licenses in 1846 and 1851198; she subsequently married Jacob’s brother, Abra¬ ham, under whose name further details about Mary will be found.199 Children of Jacobs S. and Mary (Brower) Shantz200: i. His connection to this family is as yet undocumented, but George F. P. Wanger placed him in the family line, perhaps based upon informa¬ tion from contemporary family members.203 Joseph would appropriately fit as the fourth young male in Abraham Shantz’s 28 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine household in the 1820 census.204 He was described as, variously, a merchant,205 commissioner of highways,206 pension agent, and con¬ tractor; his residence is given as Falls of Schuylkill or Ridge Avenue.207 He appears in the census of 1850 with a wife, Mary A., and a daughter, Josephine, then thirteen.208 In the census of 1880, his household includes Josephine Woodhouse, age forty-three, and Mary Woodhouse, age eight.*” Joseph died in 1883, leaving his estate to his wife, Mary Ann Shantz. Joseph Shantz married Mary Ann Evans, daughter of Robert Evans, 10 Jan. 1837, when they were both described as of Philadelphia.211 Mary Ann Shantz died 11 Feb. 1886, leaving her estate to the Guar¬ antee Trust Company, in trust for her daughter Josephine Woodoio house, and granddaughter Mary Woodhouse. Abraham3 or Abram Shantz (Abraham2,Jacob1) was born in 1813, according to his gravestone.213 He shared in business with his brother, Jacob S. Shantz, in Coventry, Chester Co., Pa. After Jacob’s death, Abraham1 ran a hotel in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., where Jacob’s widow, Mary, and her sons also lived.214 Abrahanr became proprietor of the Black Bear Hotel, South Fifth Street, Philadelphia.215 In 1858, as Abraham Shantz of Philadelphia, he purchased property on the east side of Hanover Street, north of Walnut Street, in Pottstown, which his widow later sold.216 In the 1850 census Abraham3 was enumerated in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., with his sister-in-law and nephews living in his household.217 He died in Philadelphia, 14Jan. 1860, “in the forty-sev¬ enth year of his age,” leaving his estate to his wife Mary, with her brother, Abraham Brower, as co-executor.218 Abraham3 Shantz married his brother’s widow, Mary Brower Shantz, on 3 Apr. 1855.219 There are no children known of this mar¬ riage, For many years, Mary ran a boarding house or hotel in Phila¬ delphia, where her father-in-law, Abraham Shantz, was living at the time of his death.220 In the 1870 census for Philadelphia, Maty is listed as head of household, and her brother Abraham Brower is listed as a hotel clerk.221 Brower’s daughter is also listed in the household. Mary’s son, listed as Harry, age thirty-two, must be the one called William in the 1850 census, for he was named as William H. H. Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 29 Shantz, as executor and residuary legatee of her will.222 Carrie Shantz, age nine, also resided in the household when the 1870 census was taken; she is identified in Mary’s will as the daughter of her son, Benjamin Franklin Shantz. Mary Brower Shantz died in Philadel¬ phia,June 1905, at age ninety-one, and is buried in Parkerford, Ches¬ ter Co., next to Abram Shantz.223 21. Amos3 Shantz (Abraham2, Jacob1) was born 31 Jan. 1816 in Coventry, Chester Co., Pa.224 He lived in Somers, Westchester Co., N.Y., and in Philadelphia before moving to Illinois. Amos appears in McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory for 1859;325 and in GopsilPs Philadel¬ phia City Directory, 1861 through 1872, as a contractor. In the 1880 census, Amos was enumerated, identified as a book¬ keeper, in New Trier, Cook Co., 111., with his wife Jane, and daughters Mary and Alice, near his son Charles R. Shantz.226 He has not yet been found in earlier census records. He died in Wilmette, Cook Co., 111., 29 Nov. 1883, and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Chicago.227 Amos was married, 4Jan. 1841, in Somers, N.Y., to Jane Dingee, of Somers.228 Jane died on 20 Oct. 1906 at Wilmette, 111., having lived there for thirty-five of her eighty-seven years.229 Children of Amos and Jane (Dingee) Shantz230: + 42. i, Charles4; b. 19 Nov. 1841.231 + 43. ii. Shantz and his wife Sarah, with seven other couples, sold a creamery and 114 perches of land in North Coventry, which they had acquired in 1891, to Jacob Scholl.268 In the 1870 census, George was listed with a wife, a daughter, his sister Mary Ann, and nephew Jacob C. Shantz in his household.269 According to the 1880 census, he had two sons and three daughters at home.270 By 1900, only two daughters and one son lived at home.271 George4 Washington Shantz died intestate, 31 Jul. 1907, in East Coventry.272 The inventory totaled $1,017.32.273 He married Sarah A. Joseph4 W. Shantz (Jacob3 R,, Peter2, Jacob1) was born in East 4 Vincent, 12 Sep. 1846. At the time of the 1860 census, he was counted in his Uncle William Keller’s household and, perhaps, had begun to be trained as a blacksmith by Keller,285 Although documents clearly identifying Joseph as a member of a military unit in the Civil War have yet to be found in Pennsylvania, Chester, or Federal records, a family story that he served in that war also reports that he was a deserter. What was recalled as desertion may have been absence without leave, and he may have returned to his post. A photograph in the family collection, thought to be of Joseph, has the name of a Gettysburg photographer on the back, but the person in the photo¬ graph is not wearing a uniform. Apparendy,Joseph did not return to his family after the death of his mother in 1867, nor did he claim his share in the distribution of his father’s estate, for David Finkbiner applied in 1879 for letters of administration forJoseph’s estate, saying 286 ; that he was believed dead as of May 1871 That estate was equivalent to Joseph’s share in his father’s estate. Joseph4 W. Shantz has not yet been found in any census record after 1870, wherein he was enumerated in the Ninth Ward in Phila¬ delphia with two other young men, in what may have been a tempo¬ rary military posting. Only the first three letters of the occupation are decipherable: “USR,”287 No listing in the Philadelphia City Direc¬ tory was found to clarify identification of the group. Jacob Shantz of Coventry, Pennsylvania 33 According to her will, Elizabeth Shantz, an older sister, had loaned $100 to her brother Joseph in 1881. As she ordered that amount deducted from his share in her estate, he evidently had not repaid the loan by 1902, the year she made her will.288 In her estate papers, there is a receipt for that share, signed by Joseph W. Shantz, “also known as John Wiley,” dated 8 April 1908, in Post, Garza, Texas.289 The names of the witnesses to that receipt indicate that they were not family members.Joseph’s use of one alias suggests the possibility that more may have been used, making tracing difficult. Garza County reports no death record for him in either name, and no other records have yet been found.290 28. Isaac4 Israel Shantz (Jacob3 R., Peter2,Jacob1) was born 4 Feb.1849 in East Vincent, Chester Co., Pa.291 He states in his autobiography that he had little schooling after his father’s death in 1863, Isaac purchased a parcel of land in East Pikeland in Mar. 1874 from Nicholas Vanderslice and his wife Elizabeth.292 He bought another parcel on 1 Apr. 1875 from Rev. W. Weaver and Susan C. Weaver, which he sold in 1877, together with the first parcel, to Henry Francis of Spring City.293 In April 1895, Isaac and his wife Louisa were parties, with Enos F. Grubb and his wife, to a conveyance of the Spring City Creamery to David D. On 29 May 1871, Enos and his wife Lavinia conveyed to Oliver Keeley a parcel on south Main Street containing 33,473 sq. ft., part of two lots that Enos had earlier obtained. 0 The same day, Enos and Lavinia sold to David Finkbiner a piece of land of 2,800 sq. ft. on South Main Street adjoining Finkbiner’s own property.341 As executor and as heir of his father Isaac, Enos, together with Abraham Stauffer his sister Elbe’s heir, and Enos’s second wife Mary E. Shantz sold, to Benjamin Ivey of East Coventry, the messuage, storehouse, tenement, and tract, beginning at the low water mark of the River Schuylkill at the center of the abutment of the Lawrenceville Bridge. This property comprised two tracts; one had been adjudged to Isaac, Enos’ father, from his father Jacob2 ’s estate; the other was a piece that Isaac had obtained from Henry Christman and his wife.342 The same parties, with the addition of Abram Stauffer’s second wife Ada, conveyed to George Stubblcbine of East Coventry, a tract on Chestnut Hill in North Coventry which Isaac3 Shantz had obtained from the estate of Job Fudge.343 In July 1877, Enos, now identified as of Philadelphia and a stove manufacturer, and his wife Mary, sold to Anna Keeley, wife of Joseph Keeley, late of Philadelphia, now of Spring City, a lot that Enos had purchased from Ethan A. Bickel and his wife in April 1874.344 The Keeleys were the parents of Enos’s late first wife and of Oliver Keeley, his partner.
