THE SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATE COMMITTEE OF WOMEN, BEAD AT THE ANNUAL MEETING, MARCH 7, 1927 . Mr. President , Members of the Society and Guests : Annual reports of the Society must, perforce, deal with items, plus figures ; so many volumes, so many manuscripts, so many dollars : net result ; so much greater opportunity for knowledge. Committee reports, however, can be more like human documents ; begin and end at the Committee ’s pleasure Your Associate Committee of Women ’s report is governed by the Idee of March, the Annual Meeting, without reference to the fiscal year Within this period, March to March, the Committee has duly regarded the objects for which it was appointed First : It has gained new members ; occasionally it has held wavering . . - . . ones. Second : It has added to the Society 's fast -growing collection of records and of newspaper genealogical notes The principal benefactors in this respect, this year, have been Mrs. Louis F Benson, Mrs Francis B Gummere, Mrs Harry Rogers and Mrs Edward S Sayres. Third : It has repeated its activities of former years, in arranging meetings to recall some historical events On October 27th, with the co -opcration of the Board of Directors, a Reception was given to The Welcome Society, thus commemorating the coming of William Penn and his companions on the good ship Welcome to Pennsylvania, and, also, the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the Nation Mr , Charles Francis Jenkins was the speaker of the evening All present enjoyed his illuminating address on the Signers of the Declaration of Independence and the opportunity for social intercourse with the guest Society On December 3rd, last, affiliated with the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Colonial Dames of America, Chapter 11, Philadelphia, the Friends ' Historical Association, The Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Society of Pennsylvania Women in New York, the Swedish Colonial Society, The Welcome Society, and the Women 's Board of the Sesqui Centennial Exposition, your Committee amicably arranged the ceremonies which attended the unveiling of a tablet in memory of Hannah Callowhill Penn, capable second wife of William Penn. It is permissible, is it not, for the Secretary to repoTt that the handsome bronze tablet, now upon one of the front columns of the Keystone Telephone Building, at the southeast corner of Second and Sansom streets, the site of the Slate Roof House where Hannah Penn for a time presided as the first lady of Penn sylvania, was the gift of your Committee ’s much appreciated Chairman, Miss Nina Lea, who presented it in. the name of her Committee The reception, and the historical meeting following, presided over by John Frederick Lewis, LL D., and held in. the commodious auditorium of the Telephone Company’s Building, Bhould be marked in the Society’s annals ( 101 ) . . Here might well have been written Grey ' s immortal elegy, instead of at Stoke Pogis, not many miles away. Through you and your Committee, this Jordans fund of which Mrs Henry Pemberton , Jr., is treasurer, has reached considerably over fifteen hundred dollars Again, it may be permissible, may it not, for a Secretary to report that , the Chairman of your Committee, Miss Lea, and one of the Board of Direc tors, Charles Francis Jenkins, have each contributed five hundred dollars to the fund But interest, like appreciation, is not measured by figures, so to all who have contributed, your Committee adds another expression of gratitude to that already sent out, not for the amount of the con tribution , but for the number of gracious contributors, since in the num ber lies the real index of approval Respectfully submitted NINA LEA, Chairman.
