THE CHILDRE OF AOMI (HI ROADESFASSETLAYFIELDNEWBOLD OF SUSSEX Co ) HANKLANDW RRI GTO TY, DELAWARE by Patricia Law Hatcher, FASG • H alf a century ago, H len C. Potter published in this journal an interesting account of the much-married Naomi (Hinman) Road Fas et Layfield ewbold Shankland Warrington of Sussex County I Delaware, and Worcester County, Maryland. 1 Her burial record says " aomi Warranton (who had six husbands!)" 2 It seemed at first unlikely, but, as Potter sho ed the statement was substantiated by court records as each ub equent hu band appeared in court, often repeatedly, to settle the estate of prior spou es. A high mortality rate led to the deaths of several of the children and heirs, prompting redistribution to siblings. Potter stated Naomi had two sons by her Newbold husband: James and Franci . However, published abstracts have highlighted entries in the Sussex County Orphans' Court Docket Books (SCOC) that in turn led to more detail in the originals. 3 These identified two additional children of that marriage overlooked by Potter and helped create a Genealogical Summary (see below), which the original article lacked. The reader should be aware of important elements of inheritance for this time and place. Eldest sons inherited single shares in intestate estates. When there were no children, an estate was inherited equally by iblings-both whole and half siblings. It was inherited only by tho e ho were living at the time of the death-not any already deceased or yet to be born-or by their descendants if they died before the estate was settled. * Patr-icia Law Hatcher is editor of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. he i a descendant of Mary (Avery) Shepard Hinman, the first wife of aomi' father. 1 Helene C. Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine ol. 44 (2006) 235 236 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 44 The complicated divisions below point out the value of seeking all related entries, not just tho e for the individual of focus. They also point out th lengthy span of time in which ignificant records may be createdover seventy year in thi case. Each item can reveal additional information that shape our picture of the family. Take, for example, the case of Mary Wright She first appear in the records 29 August l 772 (see below for details on all documents), with seven other receiving di tribution of the estate of Francis cwbald, specifically the 1/5 portion of the estate of hi father John Newbald (Franci ' mother was the much-married aomi). Wa he the daughter of John ewbold, of aomi, of both, or a grandchild? The abs nee of her name in the petition in February 1774 a one of the heirs of Hinman Rhoads aomi' child by an earlier husband) eliminate her as a child of Naomi-unless she was a chlld of Naomi not yet born when Hinman died in 1754, at which time Naomi was married to John ewbald. In June 1774, a record related to the property of one of her seven coheirs in 1772 says that Mary Wright was an heir in right of her mother, a sister of Franci , owe now know she was a grandchild of John and/or Naomi. John and aomi ewbald had at least four children a revealed by the record -Jame and Francis born before Hinman Rhoads' death in 1754 and Rachel and William born after, all of whom are referenced in this document. John ewbald's estate was dwided in fifths, consistent with Mary's mother being the only other child. But was she a daughter of Naomi, born after Hinman's death in 1754 or a daughter of John by an earlier marriage? The answer lies in the receipts to Francis ewbold's estate, which include one from Mary tone recorded 14 August 1774. Clearly she is the now-married Mary Wright. If she were married at eighteen, she would have been born say 1756, with her mother born two decades earlier, hence dearly a daughter of John's first marriage. Similar careful analysis i required to place other family members correctly. COC 1:136. 7 April 1742. Naomi Roads widow and administratrix of John Roads who was executor of John Roads the elder.
