NOTIES, QUERIES AND CORRECTIONS. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES. Comments on the “ABSTRACTS OF FRIENDS’ MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES, ’’ as given in these Publications, Volume II, pp. 60-79. Valuable as are the abstracts of certificates referred to, they would afford more satisfaction if they clearly showed in which columns the names of witnesses appeared. At an early date it became the custom for the nearest relatives to sign directly under the names of the bride and groom, thus making the im¬ portant columns those to the right of the certificate. The columns to the left (one or more) were filled by the men witnesses not so closely con¬ nected. The women signed separately, between the men’s columns and those of the family. In the printed abstracts in question there are vari¬ ous deviations from this rule. As all the copy appears to have begun on the left side, it has seemed worth while to reprint the names which appear in the first, or right hand columns, in the cases in which the family signed in a group by themselves. In the manuscript collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania are several volumes containing the marriage certificates, from which the abstracts are taken. (See references after each abstract.) p. 00. JOHN WOOLSTON and HANNAH COOPER. 7mo. 8, 1681, has been copied from Book A, Burlington Meeting Rec¬ ords. The signatures are in two columns. See Publications, Volume VI, pp. 246 247. The Bible entries are there correctly given beginning with the 8th line on page 247. The copyist, however, proceeded, instead of followed, the Bible record with the detached genealogical memoranda contained within the pages of said Bible. Hence the reader must understand that, prior to the said 8th line on page 247, the data is that of a brief chart, albeit with slight additions or minor corrections, all of the soundest proof too copious to include therein. As to these additions or corrections to the chart, the following for clarification should be noted : Upon the 11th line, p. 246: After ‘ married \ read, before April 1792. That my mother’s ancestors In the direct male line Davis were theirs, is ia tradition of generations long known to me, and Is curiously assisted by family likeness. A Margaret Williams, born Emory, widow, who, about 1740, married the grandfather of President Davis, has been designated as from the Welsh Tract Bap. Mtg. to the Welsh Neck Bap. Ch., .Pee Dee, So. If she were the Margaret William who signed with Griffith Thomas, then, as the Margaret’s were not identical, my judgment Is, awaiting an opportunity for research, that Margaret Thomas’ correct maiden surname will be found In the Phillips, Watts, etc., families. The Prescott Memorial, p. 64, states that Eliza¬ beth, daughter of Col. Charles Prescott of Concord, Massachusetts, was born August 31, 1837, and that she married Jesse Hosmer. It states fur¬ ther that Ann, another daughter of Col. Charles Prescott, married Amos Baker, all of which statements are in error and have been corrected in my mother’s copy of the Prescott book which is now in my possession. The facts in the premises are these : Elizabeth Prescott born in 1737, not 1837, married Captain Aaron Jones, not Jesse Hosmer. Amy, seventh child of Charles Prescott, born 7 June, 1750, married Amos Baker. Ann, eighth child of Charles Prescott, baptized at Concord, September 23, 1753 (Church Records) ; married Jesse Hosmer. Ann Hosmer, wife of Jesse Hosmer, died July 24, 1810 (Concord Town Records), aged fifty -six years (Church Records). Preserved among my mother’s notes, and in her handwriting, is the statement that, “Ann Prescott died July 24, 1810, married Jesse Hosmer. 7 7 Preserved also in notes, furnished by Mr. George Tolman, who edited the Concord Records, is the statement that, “Jesse Hosmer married Ann Prescott.” My grandfather Abel Hosmer often spoke to me of his mother Ann Prescott, and of the expedition against Louisburg in which 1 1 Col. Charles Prescott, JOSIAH HARMAR PENNIMAN. father of Ann Prescott, ’’ served. HATHAWAY — BORDEN. To the Bible Records contributed by me in Publications, Volume V, pages 264-5, it seems advisable to make the fol¬ lowing statement, together with some additions to said record. Later information makes it probable that the Bible, supposed to have belonged to Isaac Hathaway and so designated in the Publications, was not his but that of his daughter, Mary H%haway Borden. In the Record Collection of the Pennsylvania Society Oi. 'Colonial Dames of America, it is listed as MARY HATHAWAY BORDEN’S BIBLE. A certified copy of the Freetown, Massachusetts, town records, corroborates the dates of birth and death of Isaac and Phebe (Bailey) Hathaway’s children, as given from the Bible record on page 264 of the Publications, save that 1 Irane, born Sept. 4, 1759,” is on the Town Records, “Irene, born September 11, 1759. 7 7 THE FREETOWN TOWN RECORDS, BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 1686-1844. page 33, has the following, which is germain to the subject : Isaac Hathaway, son of Jacob * Hathaway, born July 16, 1704. X, page 54.) Thomas Borden was born, not as stated in the Borden Genealogy, page 139, in 1750, but, as given in the Publications from the Bible Record, October 26, 1749. According to the said Bible, he died May 30, 1831. His gravestone, however, gives the death date as May 29, 1831, not No¬ vember 29, 1831, as in the Borden Genealogy. He probably died about midnight. Jefferson Borden, his twelfth child, was born 28 February, 1801, not 3 February, as in the Borden Genealogy, p. 169. He married 15 April, 1828, not 1825, Susan Elizabeth Easton; I was present at the fiftieth anniversary thereof, 15 April, 1878. His daughter, Emma Corinna Borden Keen (ibid., 230), wife of William Williams Keen, M. D., my mother, died at Osterville, now Wiano, Massachusetts, 12, not 2, July, 1886. CORINNA KEEN FREEMAN.
