THIRTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA. BEAD AT THE ANNUAL MEETING MAKCH 4 , 1929 G S P To the Members of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania : The Board of Directors begs to submit the following report for the calendar year ending December 31, 1928 : At the Thirty -sixth Annual Meeting of the Society held March 3, 1928, the following named officers and directors were elected : President : Charles P, Keith. Vice - Presidents : John Frederick Lewis, Edward Robins, Miss Anne Hollingsworth Wharton. Secording Secretary : Ernest Spofford. Corresponding Secretary : Miss M. Atherton Leach. Historian : Frank Worthington Melvin , Treasurer : Ogden Dungan Wilkinson. Directors to serve three years : Charles F. Jenkins, George Henderson, Ralph Beaver Strassburger. St. George L. Sioussat , Fh.D., Professor of American History in the University of Pennsylvania, delivered a brilliant address, entitled ‘ 1 Some Thoughts upon Biography and Biographers. " The usual supper was then served. At a regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors held January 15, 1928, a special committee, consisting of President Keith , Miss Leach and Messrs. Stewart and Spofford, was appointed to arrange for the issuance of an appeal to the membership for funds to be applied to the core of The Gilbert Cope Collection. This Collection has been found to be of greater magnitude than could have been foreseen . One hundred and five manuscript records books have been re- arranged , repaired, rebound and added to the Society !s Collec tions ; a normal five years increase in a few months. Manuscript family sketches, genealogical notes and correspondence have been alphabetically assembled making, to date, thirty - three folio volumes of approximately three hundred pages each and covering the letter F. These arc now in the bindery . Over one fourth of thi3 branch of the work has been accomplished in addition to that of the record books. It will be easily recognized that with the Society ’a present executive force, the emergency of this avalanche of high -grade material necessitated an additional force and an increased pay roll. This increase has largely been met by the twelve hundred dollar fund so generously contributed by the membership. It greatly embarrasses the Board of Directors to put forth another appeal for the conclusion of this vital work , but not to do so would seriously hamper the Society ’s growth in other and likewise important directions. At the March meeting it was upon motion ordered that Mrs, Hampton ( 307 ) 1929 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol X No.3 Thirty -seventh Annual Report . 308 . L Carson, Chairman of The Associate Committee of Women, be invited to attend the meetings of the Board of Directors. At the October meeting the thanks of the Board were tendered Miss Leach for special work daring summer months in connection with the Cope Collection. Appreciation and thanks were extended to The Lan- caster County Historical Society for loan of valuable material for photostat purposes and to Mr. William F. Worner, its Librarian, for his fine co -operation with the aims of the Society, To fill the vacancy created by the death of Miss Wharton, Miss Leach was, at this meeting, elected a vice president, but has since declined re- . election Number Two, Volume X of the Society 's Publications has been dis tributed to the membership. - Through the recently formed Bibliographical Records Committee, Miss Leach , Chairman, a number of noteworthy additions have been made to the Society 's Collections ; many church records have been located, and a concrete effort begun toward copying gravestone inscriptions in various P parts of the State. The increase in the Society 's membership, collections and finances, over that reported in March, 1928, gives cause for satisfaction and encouragement, particularly when accompanied by the gratifying prospect of continuance Sixty new members were enrolled during the year. 659 Number of members, January 1, 1928 21 ... .. ..... .. Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol X No.3 Da util Mxlnz At the stated meeting of February, the Directors, with profound regret, recorded the death of their esteemed associate, David Milne, who died January 24, 1929.. Mr. Milne was born in Philadelphia July 24, 18o9 , the son of Caleb Jones Milne of Philadelphia and his wife, Sarah Margaretta Shea of Pittsburgh. His preliminary education was obtained at the Episcopal Academy, his bachelor ’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania , with subsequent degrees of M A and Ph.D. from the same institution * The ancestral roots of the present lie buried deep in the dim past. Paternally, Mr. Milne had his in the ancient city of Aberdeen , Scotland, which has given to this country many men of eminence. His grandfather, David Milne, for whom lie was named and from whom he inherited the Stirling Scotch qualities of industry, integrity and general uprightness, was a native of Aberdeen. He settled in Philadelphia in 1827, where lie spent the subsequent forty -five years of his prosperous life. Mr. Milne was not , however, wholly Scotch Irish, Gorman and English commingled and brought to him the unusual combination of firmness with tolerance, tenacity with genial humor , positive beliefs with temperate expression thereof . It is for these attributes, joined to his gentleness of manner and loyalty to the ideals of this Society , that he will long be remembered by the Board to which he was elected in 1916, having been a member of the Society from 1903* Manufacturer, banker, philanthropist, scholar, economist, ami clubman , Mr. Milne ’s interests were varied , and upon all he bestowed the due measure of his time, lie was a member of the firm of C J , Milne & {Sons, manufacturers of textile fabrics, beginning his business career in the office of a private banking house ; was a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania anil Evans Institute, Director of the United Security Trust Company, a member of the Boaril of Managers of the Polyclinic and Howard Hospitals, and of the Advisory Board of Managers of the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, the Sanitarium Association of Phila delphia and the Henry Phipps Institute. He was President of the Penn sylvania Retreat for Blind Mutes and Aged and Infirm Blind Person and of the Pennsylvania Working Home for Blind Men. He was also a member of the St * Andrew 's Society as president of which his grand father and father had preceded him in the same office, the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of which lie had likewise been president, The Historical Society- of Pennsylvania , Franklin Institute, Pennsylvania Mu senm , the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a member of the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society Sons of the Revolution , lie was affiliated with many other literary, patriotic and social organizations, of which tlie list is too lengthy to give in full He married 29 April, 1896, in Washington, D„ Margaret Love, daughter of Rear Admiral Joseph S. Skerrett , U.S,N,, who with four sons, survives. The Society has lost a friend ; the community a useful citizen .. S P .
