REVIEWS Missing Relatives and Lost Friends. By Robert W. Barnes. Baltimore, Clearfield Company, 2008. xx+229 pages, index, paper. $26.50. The book could have used a subtitle to explain its scope. It is a compilation of advertisements for lost family members, runaway servants, etc., that appeared in newspapers covering Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, beginning in 1719 and going through the early 1800s. The entries, presented alphabetically, are annotated if Barnes was aware of related information. Much of the information has appeared in print, but the value of the broad geographical scope is that the missing or lost person might be in another colony or we had no reason to search the specific newspaper in which the advertisement appeared. The best way to use this volume is to allocate quiet time to scan the entire index for family names. I did this and was rewarded with an advertisement specifically stating that two other individuals of the same surname as my ancestor are his brothers, an important clue for European research. TransAtlantic Voyages, 1600—1699, Second Edition. By David Dobson. Baltimore, Clearfield Company, 2008. xiiii+138 pages, paper. $18.50. This is an expanded version of the author’s earlier work, listing ships traveling in either direction between locations in the Western hemisphere and Europe other than England. Information came from both primary and secondary sources. Entries are alphabetical by ship, giving the master, ports visited, dates, miscellaneous information, and the source. Most of the voyages were exploratory or for purposes of trade. When the source indicated there were passengers, indentured servants, or soldiers on board (no names), this is highlighted in bold italics. For Philadelphia, entries with passengers are: America, from Rotterdam via London, with eighty passengers, arriving 30 August 1683; Antelope of Belfast, arriving 9 October 1682 with seven passengers from Ireland; and Concord, sailing from Rotterdam with passengers on 24 July 1683.
