This Dear Child was afflicted in various ways from his birth , but his last illness was more distressing than I have Language to express, being seiz ’d with a Dropsy in his Brain attended with excruciating pain, which he frequently in a very discriptive manner expressed, being a child of uncommon understanding & sensibility, my heart being deeply impress ’d with the Loss of his Father this stroke revived every scene, left nature weak indeed, but can subscribe of a truth it is only he that strikes the blow can heal the bleeding wound My Dear Son Charles Pemberton departed this life the 29* h day of the 1st month the oth of the weak , between the hours of nine & ten at night in the year of our Lord 1778, it being a few days before he was twelve years old & was buried on 1st of the same month in friends burying ground in 4 tii St. 'hiladelphia, This Dear Child was afflicted more than twelve months with a dropsy which at time3 I flatter ’d myself he had recover ’d, being of an uncommon good constitution from his birth, but so it is this lovely Child is taken from me, & how dare I complain, when he that gives has an undoubled right to take away, this 1 am thoroughly Convinc ’d of & pray it may please the All -mighty Maker of Heaven & Earth to relieve my mind from its present weight of affliction & in all things & at all times direct me & mine as in his Infinite Wisdom be may think fit. For heaven ordaind that death should boast his reign 'Ere the purged soul Celestial heights could gain.
