ERNEST SPOFJORD, Recording Secretary , 1928 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol X No.2 With a sense of deep bereavement the Board of Directors of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and its Associate Committee of Women have to announce to the Society ’s mem bership the death , on July twenty -ninth , 1928, of Miss Anne Hollingsworth Wharton, Litt.B , a Vice - President of the Society and the Corresponding Secretary of the Associate Committee. By the death of Miss Wharton the Board of Directors, the Associate Committee and the Society have together lost a greatly esteemed officer , one whom it was a pleasure to meet, one whose place it will be difficult, if not impossible , to fill. It is, there fore, fitting that a record be made of the oneness of profound regret and sincere appreciation of her rare quality. Miss Wharton had her spiritual and genealogical roots deep in Pennsylvania soil, where her earliest American progenitor Thomas Wharton, arrived shortly after the first coming of the great Proprietor. She loved Pennsylvania ’s broad meadows, its hills, valleys and deep rivers, its teeming cities and quiet ham lets, as her ‘ i Pennsylvania Towns ’ ' afford ample evidence. She also loved England and all it stood for to the early colonists, as her “ English Ancestral Homes of Noted Americans ” will testify. She had a sympathetic understanding of the history of this Commonwealth which her forbears had helped to create, and her everyday conversation was replete with allusions to the stirring events enacted within its borders during the march of two centuries. Unusually well versed in polite literature , her retentive mem ory made her a delightful conversationalist as well as a ready writer, of which latter, there are no better illustrations than her i Salons, Colonial and Republican, ' ’ her “ Teirlooins in Miniature,’’ and ‘1 Through Colonial Doorways 1’ But she had many books to her accounting, books which caught her personality and held it. One of the earliest genealogies of an outstanding Pennsylvania family was published by her in 1880, entitled i6 The Wharton Family. ? A long line of gentle- folk brought her an inheritance of high ideals, gracious traditions, calm courage, and withal, a sweet gayety, a kindly, humorous tolerance of the weaknesses and foibles of others She was indeed a fine Victorian flower, the like of which will not soon again be found Keen-eyed, she took the measure of her life and, faltering not, planned future work almost to the end ii Sunset and evening star ’ ’: Full of years, young of soul, unafraid , Mias Wharton heard that " one clear call " in the firm hope of a glorious Resurrection TIIE BOARD OP DIRECTORS and THE ASSOCIATE COMMITTEE OF WOMEN. . - S P . 4 G . } . . . . 1928 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol X No.2
