Penn-Gaskell Halls of the Twentieth Century HANNAH BENNER ROACH, F.G.S.P., F.A.S.G. D ATA pertaining to the Penn-Gaskell Hall descendants of William -1--/ Penn — issue of 8. Peter Penn-Gaskell Hall by his second wife, Amelia Mixsell — was presented in the last issue (No. 2, 117-118) of this Magazine as part of "The Penn-Gaskell Family: Addenda to the Family of Penn." That data was limited to the information available in published works and public records. Through the interest expressed by various members of this branch of the family (the only one still closely associated with the Philadelphia area) and their generous cooperation, it is now possible to expand and amend that record, as well as previous published accounts, and to include all the twentieth-century members omitted heretofore. Of particular interest are the birth and death records entered in the Bible of Peter Gaskell and his wife Elizabeth Edwards, here published for the first time:' Births Peter Gaskell born May 19, 1764 and in May 1826 will be 62 yet of age Married Anno Domini 1793 Eliza Gaskell born Jan. 31, 1773 and E.G. will be then about 8 yrs 8t 4 months less Thomas Perm Gaskell died 19th day of November 1823 about 2 'A years before I shall be 62 yrs of age. [Children of Peter Gaskell and Elizabeth Edward.] William Penn Gaskell born Sunday 29 00 June 1794 ,The Bible descended to S. Peter Penn-Gaskell Hall and is now held by his grandson, William PennGaskell Hall, Jr., of Berwyn, with whose kind permission the record is now published. The tide page in part reads: "The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testament, together with the Apocrypha. ... Printed and Published by Mathew Carey, No. 122 Market Suwet, Philadelphia, 1808." The entries occur between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the Apocrypha. There am no marriage mtries. 2 Their marriage certificate, also in the possession of Mr. Hall, reads: "This is to Certify all whom it may concern That Peter Gaskell and Elizabeth Edwards were joined together in Holy Matrimony this 3" day of November in the Year of our Lord 1793, by me Slav* Clay, Rector of the United Churches of St. Davids Radner [sic] AA" The Rev. Clay's charge included aJo, St. James' Emscopal Church, Perhosnen, where the marriage is entered incorrectly as taking place on I December. and St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Great Valley, E. Whitdand Top., Chester Co. From the wording of the above mtries, it would nem that Peter Onkel! may have enmred them in the Bible early in 1826, perhaps transferring then horn some older record. 174 Penn-Gas/cell Halls 175 Thomas Perm Gaskell born Wednesday January 6th 1796 Eliza Gaskell born Wednesday February 28. 1798 Peter Gukell Jun' born Thursday April 3. 1800 Alexander Forbes Gaskell born Monday Septem.. 20. 1802 Christiana Gaskell born Monday May 27. 1805 Jane Gaskell born Tuesday December 13 1808 Isaac Gaskell born Wednesday Jan, 9. 1811 [Children of Christiana Gas/cell and her husband William S. A star athlete at Friends' Central School, he attended Temple and Villanova University. In 1934, the Associate Committee of Women of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania initiated the project of obtaining a place in the Hall of Fame for the Founder of Pennsylvania. As a result of their enthusiasm and correspondence, a bust of William Penn by the sculptor, A. Stirling Calder, was unveiled by young Philip Penn-Gaskell Hall 28 May 1936, in the Hall of Fame at the University Heights Campus of New York University.n Two years later on 14 September 1938, he was the first of the Penn descendants to accept from the Conard-Pyle Company, proprietors of the Star Rose Gardens at West Grove, Chester County, one red rose as payment of the annual quit rent laid down by his ancestor, William Penn, 3rd, in 1742. This pleasant ceremony has its roots in a deed of lease and release executed 24, 25 September 1731, wherein John, Thomas and Richard Penn confirmed to William Penn, 3rd, grandson of the Founder, 5000 acres of unlocated land in the Province. In 1742, William Penn, 3rd, conveyed the right to the still unlocated land to William Allen (later Chief Justice of the Province) , subject to an annual quit rent of one red rose forever 22 An account of their marriage is in The Philadelphia Inquirer, 24 August 1947. Allen had the land surveyed and in 1748 conveyed fifty-three acres of it to one Samuel Cross. One hundred and eighty years later this tract (now in Penn Township, Chester County) was acquired by the Conard-Pyle Company, along with the old tavern building which had been erected on it at the intersection of the roads leading to West Grove and New London. In the restoration of the inn, henceforth known as the Red Rose Inn, an investigation of the title to the land revealed the old quit rent laid on the property. The Conard-Pyle Company elected to pay the quit rent, and for ten years it was accepted in appropriate ceremonies by the president of the Chester County Historical Society as representative of the Proprietary. In September, 1938, Philip Penn-Gaskell Hall, Jr. was the first Penn descendant to accept the rent. Since then it has been received by various members of the Hall family.' On 10 November 1935, Philip Penn-Gaskell Hall, Jr., married at Philadelphia, HORTENSIA LUISA MEDRANO, born at Philadelphia, daughter of Higinio Julio Medrano, Cuban Consul at Philadelphia, and his wife Amelia Luis Iraola.
