Penn-Gaskell Addenda FRANCIS JAMES DALLETT, F.G.S.P., F.A.S.G. A BRIEF account of MARY PENN-GASKELL, born 12 September 1834, daughter of Peter Penn-Gaskell, Jr., and his wife Louisa Adelaide Heath, appeared in this Magazine in Volume XXV (1967), 107. She married 22 March 1865, Dr. Isaac T. Coates, and died testate 22 August 1877. The following information can now be added to the previous account. ISAAC TAYLOR COATES, SOD. of Moses and Lydia (Taylor) Coates, and grandson of Moses Coates, founder of Coatesville, Pa., was born 17 March 1834, in Coatesville. He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, M.D., 1859. Coates entered the United States Navy as Acting Assistant Surgeon, 1861, and served aboard the U.S.S. Bienville and other vessels during the Civil War. He resigned in 1865, the year of his marriage, and the same year became Assistant Surgeon, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry. Subsequently he was attached to the Seventh Regiment, U.S. Cavalry, under General Custer. Later he practiced his profession in Reno, Nevada, and in the southwestern states. He died 23 June 1883, in Sotarro, New Mexico. He was the author of a Centennial Oration on Chester (Pa.). All the above information was supplied in 1906 by his relation, Joseph R. T. Coates, of Chester, Pa., to the General Alumni Society of the University of Pennsylvania, and is in the biographical folder of Isaac Taylor Coates in the University of Pennsylvania Archives.' In October 1906, Dr. Coates's only surviving child, HAROLD PENNGASKELL COATES, then employed by the Electric Light Company of St. Louis, Mo., advised the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Society of the date of death of his father, as above, and that his mother, Mary (Penn-Gaskell) Coates, had died 22 August 1877, at Philadelphia (not in Delaware County). In 1906 a genealogy of the Moses Coates family was published, and it is possible that Harold Penn-Gaskell Coates supplied the information of his own family which appeared therein. This 1 See also Howard A. Kelly and 'Walter L Burrage, Dictionary of American Medical BiograPhy (New York, 1928), I, 238. 2 28 Penn-Gas/cell Addenda 229 record states that he married on 2 July 1891, FLORENCE ELIZABETH JARVIS, who was born in Philadelphia, and that they had two daughters: ROSALEEN JARVIS PENN-GASKELL COATES, born 14 March 189-[sic], and LUCREI1A YALE MORTON COATES, born 20 November 1902.2 Perhaps a St. Louis genealogist could furnish the later history of this branch of the Penn-Gaskell family as represented by Harold PennGaskell Coates and his daughters. According to the alumni records in the Princeton University Archives, PETER PENN -GASKELL HALL, born 16 March 1830, son of Christiana Gulielma Penn-Gaskell and her husband William S. Hall, and a first cousin of Dr. Isaac Coates's wife Mary Penn-Gaskell, was a non-graduate member of the Class of 1849 of the College of New Jersey — since 1896 known as Princeton University. He entered the sophomore class in 1846, was dismissed on 5 March 1847, for refusing to withdraw his name from a petition, was restored by action of the faculty on 22 March 1847, but was withdrawn from the College by his father on 29 March 1847.' Additional information on the Skillern branch of the Penn-Gaskell family is included in the recently published The Ancestry and Posterity of Matthew Clarkson (1661 - 1702), a work reviewed in this issue of this Magazine. 2 Truman Coates, M.D., comp., A Genealogy of Moses and Susanna Coates who settled in Pennsylvania in 1717, and Their Descendants, 113, W. sass The Feno-Gaskell Family," in Volume XXV (1967), Its, of this Magazine for further details of his life. If ROBERT Cusunst, son of John Cushin, formerly of Donoman, but afterwards of Rathkeale, in the county of Limerick, and who embarked from Cork as a redemptioner in the ship Anne, Capt. Benjamin Edminstone, the 16th of June 1783, for Philadelphia, will enquire of the Printers of this paper, or inform MR. PAUL ZANTTINGER, at Lancaster, of his place of residence, he may be informed of something interesting of his friends. Pennsylvadit Gazette, 28 October 1786
